The American Physical Therapy Association's code of ethics: its historical foundations.

This paper surveys selected historical foundations of the present American Physical Therapy Association's CODE OF ETHICS, showing the extent to which the present code draws upon oaths, ideas in ethics textbooks, and other sources. The article presenta a basis for understanding the significance of these historical influences and provides one means by which physical therapists can more fully appreciate the relevance of the code today.

Principles of ethics and code of professional conduct with official advisory opinions revised to May 1992.

The ethical statements which have historically been subscribed to by the dental profession have had the benefit of the patient as their primary goal. Recognition of this goal, and of the education and training of a dentist, has resulted in society affording to the profession the privilege and obligation of self-government. The Association calls upon members of the profession to be caring and fair in their contact with patients. Although the structure of society may change, the overriding obligation of the dentist will always remain the duty to provide quality care in a competent and timely manner. All members must protect and preserve the high standards of oral health care provided to the public by the profession. They must strive to improve the care delivered--through education, training, research and, most of all, adherence to a stringent code of ethics, structured to meet the needs of the patient.

A code of ethics for a community mental health program.

The Orange County Department of Mental Health developed a code of ethics to give its variety of employees a single set of standards for patient care and professional behavior in a community mental health program. The need for the code grew from problems of role definition and interdisciplinary collaboration that repeatedly arose during the program's development. General principles for the code were extracted from various professional codes, from issues arising in the day-to-day workings of the program, and from existing laws. The code, presented here, defines principles related to confidentiality, professional conduct, quality of service, moral and legal standards, clients' rights, and therapist-client relationships.
