A review of small canned computer programs for survey research and demographic analysis.

A variety of small canned computer programs for survey research and demographic analysis appropriate for use in developing countries are reviewed in this article. The programs discussed are SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences); CENTS, CO-CENTS, CENTS-AID, CENTS-AIE II; MINI-TAB EDIT, FREQUENCIES, TABLES, REGRESSION, CLIENT RECORD, DATES, MULT, LIFE, and PREGNANCY HISTORY; FIVFIV and SINSIN; DCL (Demographic Computer Library); MINI-TAB Population Projection, Functional Population Projection, and Family Planning Target Projection. A description and evaluation for each program of uses, instruction manuals, computer requirements, and procedures for obtaining manuals and programs are provided. Such information is intended to facilitate and encourage the use of the computer by data processors in developing countries.

A demographic analysis of the components of selection in a population of Arctic Skuas.

From previously published demographic data of the age distributions and reproductive rates of the pale, intermediate and dark phenotypes of the Arctic Skua, revised estimates are obtained of the intrinsic rates of increase and selective coefficients of the phenotypes in each sex. Two significant components of selection are variation in age of maturity and variation in reproductive success. Sexual selection is a component of the variation in reproductive success. Dark and intermediate birds have a greater reproductive success than pales, partly as a result of their advantage in sexual selection. Pale birds have an overall advantage, however, because they are younger when they first breed. Given the estimated selective coefficients, a computer model predicts that pale birds will gradually replace the others. So far there are not enough data collected over a sufficiently long time to test the model rigorously.

[The early bronze age graveyards of Franzhausen I, lower Austria. 2. Demographic analysis].

In a recent study of 714 graves of the Early Bronze Age cemetery, Franzhausen I, 658 individuals were demographically analysed. The masculinity rate and the mortality rate in the age groups were of similar order compared with estimates derived from other series of this period. On the base of a stationary population model, life tables were calculated showing life expectancy at birth to be 25.8 years and at the age of 20, 17.7 years. Also computed were: the crude death rate (Z = 38.8); and the population size (P = 31 or 65). The lack of infants were estimated by regressions (5q0 = 58%) and the results are discussed.

Age Factors

Hearing-impaired children under age 6: a demographic analysis.

This paper presents information about hearing-impaired children under the age of 6 who are receiving special educational services in the United States and have been reported to the Annual Survey of Hearing-Impaired Children and Youth conducted by Gallaudet University's Center for Assessment and Demographic Studies. Results indicate an increase in the number of hearing-impaired children under age 6 reported to the survey over the last 10 years, especially children from minority backgrounds. The second section of the analysis focuses on students from schools participating in a model state project that encourages early identification and provision of services to hearing-impaired students and their families. The data pertain only to those children who are receiving services through established programs reporting to the Annual Survey; thus, inferences about the overall prevalence of hearing impairment among this age group should not be drawn.

Low rate of population increase of the Gidra Papuans in the past: a genealogical-demographic analysis.

The population increase rate of the Gidra in lowland Papua in the past was estimated using the rate of intergenerational replacement of females based on genealogical records involving 889 women, alive or deceased, who completed reproduction. During the period from a century ago to the time of manifest influence of civilization several decades ago, the Gidra had a constant annual increase rate of about 0.2%. The discussion includes a historical assessment of this rate with reference to the local conditions and an ecological explanation for its microenvironmental variation and suggests a reassessment of the methodology for studying fertility and population growth in anthropological and prehistoric populations.

The Saradidi, Kenya, rural health development programme: retrospective demographic analysis.

A census was done in Saradidi, Kenya from 1980 to 1982 as part of a community-based health development programme. The population was 42,755 (excluding 39 persons of unknown age or sex); 17.1% were less than five years old, 46.9% were below age 15, 4.7% were age 65 years or older and 19.7% were women in the reproductive years (age 15 to 44 years). The sex ratio was 86 males per 100 females due principally to migration of adult males for work. The mean number of persons per household was 4.0 and the mean village population was 764. The singulate mean age of marriage for men was 27.0 years and for women 19.9 years; 0.8% of adult men had never married. Only 0.1% of women by age 50 had never been married. Men were significantly more likely than women to be married to more than one spouse, divorce and separation was higher among men, and by age 50 about one-third of women were widows. Men had more years of formal education than women and young people of both sexes more than older people; 73.1% of men and 96.1% of women 60 years and more had never attended school. Infant mortality rates estimated indirectly ranged between 139 and 155 by area. A strong association was found between increasing education of the mother and decreased reported mortality of children. The total fertility of 6.2 was high but lower than the national average possibly because of the high rates of polygamy and primary infertility and the long periods of amenorrhoea and breast feeding which occurred after delivery. This area continues to have one of the highest levels of infant and child mortality in Kenya as well as relatively high fertility and a population with a very young age structure. This implies a continued very rapid rate of population growth which will make more difficult in the future the problems of delivering effective health services and overcoming poverty. A vigorous programme directed toward improving health is indicated which must include family planning.

Oocyte donors: a demographic analysis of women at the University of Southern California.

A summary is presented of 3 years' experience with donors in an oocyte donation programme. During this interval, 50 women participated as gamete donors. All proffered their services without solicitation from the programme. Most were college-educated, working mothers. The majority stated that the primary motivation for participation was concern for others' infertility. Oocytes donors generally found the required use of parenteral medication taxing but tolerable. In most cases, injections were administered to the donor by her husband or by the female recipient. The majority of donations were performed without anonymity (66%). Cycles were performed at approximately 3-month intervals. This approach as well tolerated by donors and allowed predictable scheduling of cases. All women felt their participation was of great significance and each was willing to donate oocytes again if asked.

[Occupational-demographic analysis of employment of the population of USSR, RSFSR and Ukrainian SSR according to the general census].

Aging of the manpower resources is still continuing in this country as a whole and in individual republics, the average age approaching 40 years thus stepping on the verge of the older age group. The aging people are being 'pushed away' from most professions and occupations. Judging from the results of the recent general census of the population, in the USSR the portion of the 'pushed away' manpower has amounted to 80.7%. The growing discrepancy between the aging manpower resources and the modern industry demands are expressed in terms of increased morbidity and mortality among the productive age-groups.

[Skeletochronological determination of age and demographic analysis of a population of Acanthodactylus pardalis (Lischenstein, 1823) of the Kerkennah islands (Tunisia)].

The skeletochronological analysis of 34 adult lizards from population of Acanthodactylus pardalis of Kerkennah islands in Tunisia enabled to: determine the individual age of the animals; delineate four various cohorts making up the studied population; evaluate around 4 years life span in nature of this species; point out that the renewal rate accounts for 41% of its population. Moreover the method of "maximums successifs" is applied on sizeable sample in order to shore up the obtained results.
