Evaluation of the physical properties of crown dental porcelain and the effect of newly developed anti-binding additive.

A colloidal silica-based substitute for the water added to dental porcelain has been developed which restricts rounding on firing and gives greater and indefinitely prolonged unfired biscuit strength. In conjunction with product evaluation, it has been found that both the modulus of rupture and the diametrical tensile strength of dental porcelains can be measured with a high degree of precision.

Borates

Viscosity of dental porcelain as a function of temperature.

A method for viscosity measurement is described and representative data are given for opaque, gingival, and incisal porcelains. The significance of viscosity in annealing and in stress development due to thermal expansion mismatch is discussed. Thermal history of the porcelain is shown to be important only over a relatively small temperature interval in affecting residual stresses.

Aluminum Oxide

Luminescence spectra of dental porcelains.

The luminescence spectra were obtained for a series of porcelain teeth and powders currently used in this country. Comparison was made between the spectra of these materials and the spectra of plastic teeth and natural tooth structures. It was found that many of the porcelain teeth and powders have strikingly different luminescence characteristics than those of natural teeth.

Acrylic Resins

Composite resins bonded to porcelain with silane solution.

A system of bonding composite resins to dental porcelain with silane solution produced a reliable bond. The introduction of stresses, particularly thermal and functional, needs to be investigated further and tested clinically. This technique is now being investigated clinically in a number of porcelain-fused-to-gold restorations. It could be an effective method of intraoral repair of fractured or chipped porcelain restorations.

Composite Resins

Microstructures in non-precious alloys near the procelain-metal interaction zone.

The chemistry of microstructures near the interfacial reaction zones of four non-precious alloys and two different brands of dental porcelain has been analyzed. It was found that most non-precious dental alloys contain second phases which can alter elemental concentration profiles. Recommendations for assessing interfacial reaction zone chemistry in dental non-precious alloys are offered.

Metal posterior teeth for the chronic bruxing patient.

This article outlines a technique for the fabrication of metal posterior tooth blocks which have tooth-colored facings of acrylic resin or dental porcelain. The technique is applicable for all removable dental restorations but has special applicability for the chronic bruxing patient who has a natural dentition opposing the removable partial denture.
