Getting the most out of a radiology department education committee.

Regular meetings of residency program teaching faculty are required by the ACGME and support the educational mission of the department. The education committee should be viewed by the department chair and other members of the faculty as being equally important as the departmental research, operations, and finance committees. An education committee that is dedicated to promoting excellence in education and supports the educational mission of the department will enhance the department's local, regional, and national reputation.

Computer applications for nursing staff education departments.

The computer has many applications for the management of a staff education department. One essential application is the recording and monitoring of the nursing staff's educational activities. Other pertinent activities may include the preparation of budget and department activities statistics reports. However, the array of computer software programs that is available for the management of data and administrative functions can be intimidating. By networking with users whose computer applications needs are similar to your own, and by communicating with members of your computer services department, the list of applications can be refined to a few software programs. These programs can provide efficiency and accuracy for monitoring and reporting on nursing staff education activities.

Utilization of efficiency analyses in an educational department: making an informed decision.

The decision to utilize cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis in a hospital education department may not represent the most efficient use of the department's resources. To make an informed decision requires an understanding of the potentialities and limitations of efficiency analysis and an appraisal of the decision's impact on the department. A critical examination of the pros and cons of cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis is presented, followed by a suggested framework for decision-making. The weighing of the benefits and costs of efficiency analysis in terms of departmental needs and priorities allows the nurse educator to make a decision that optimizes the use of the department's resources.
