[Reflections on the use of fluid dimethylpolysiloxan in plastic surgery of the head and neck].

The authors present retrospectively results and complications of 47 treatments with fluid dimethylpolysiloxane (silicone). The injections were not administered in the author's surgical department. The history of fluid silicone, its tissue reactions and the aesthetic results obtained are described. Different types of complications and their management are discussed. According to the authors' experience fluid dimethylpolysiloxane has not proved to be a proper material for plastic reconstructive and aesthetic treatment in the head and neck region.

Determination of dimethylpolysiloxane in instant coffee.

A method is described for determining dimethylpolysiloxane in instant coffee. The siloxane is extracted with chloroform in a Soxhlet apparatus and then converted to silica which is estimated by a heteropoly blue method. The method is interference-free, and 5 microgram dimethylpolysiloxane can be easily detected.

Effect of dimethylpolysiloxane fluid on the stability and dissolution of prednisolone.

The physicochemical effects of a dimethylpolysiloxane fluid as a vehicle for prednisolone on its stability and dissolution pattern were evaluated. No detectable degradation of prednisolone was noted during 8 weeks of storage at 4, 26 and 45 degressC. The release rate of prednisolone from its suspension in dimethylpolysiloxane was lower than that from the aqueous suspension. However, the amount of prednisolone released in 30 min from the aqueous suspension was only about 5.5% greater than that released from its suspension in the silicone fluid.

cAMP levels in reactive tissues around dimethylpolysiloxane solid implants.

By the aid of radioimmunologic assay, the authors measured the cAMP content of the reactive capsules around solid dimethylpolysiloxane implants in mice at different times; they also measured the same substance in some human connective tissues (granulation tissue and normal dermis) and compared together all the values they obtained. Different concentrations of cAMP in different tissues seem to reflect correspondent histologic findings, since they vary according to them. These values also seem to indicate a close correspondence between the development of the process of wound healing and of the foreign-body reaction following the implantation of alloplastic materials. On the basis of these data, the authors suggest an experimental therapeutic trial to enhance peripheral cAMP synthesis in order to control the process of reactive capsule constitution.

[Dimethylpolysiloxane reinforced film in a membrane oxygenator].

With the purpose of diffuse membranous oxygenation of blood the possibility of employing a Soviet-made dimethylpolyxyloxane-reinforced film "Sigma" was investigated. The test-trials were carried out with a membranous oxygenator of the "Sandwich" type. In 15 acute tests on dogs a partial cardio-pulmonary pass-by shunting with oxygenation of the blood after the veno-venous or veno-arterial perfusion was performed. With the mass-exchange area of 1.15 m2 the oxygen transport in different tests varied within a range of 20-50 ml/min and depended upon the arterio-venous difference and the circulation rate. No disruptions in the elimination of carbon dioxide were in evidence. In the course of investigations the "Sigma" material was found to be strong, impermeable to liquids and is not subject to swelling following its long-term use.
