The unique shape of the external ear depends on the underlying cartilaginous framework. Injuries of the external ear are common. In dealing with lacerations, subperichondrial hematomas, perichondritis, burns and frostbite, particular care should be taken to maintain the cartilaginous framework and to prevent infection. In this way cosmetic deformities of the external ear can be prevented.

One minor anomaly of the external ear is a "third crus", which is an addition to the normal upper and lower crura at the anterior end of the anthelix. Another minor deformity is an extension of the crus of the helix, wherein it runs as a crest across the concha. An operation to correct the latter deformity is described.
During chondrogenesis in the external ear of the rat oxytalan fibres precede the appearance of mature elastic fibres by 6-7 days. The spatial distribution of oxytalan fibres in fetal and neonatal pre-cartilage corresponds to that of the elastic fibres in mature cartilage. These findings support the hypothesis that oxytalan fibres in the pre-cartilage of the external ear of the rat are pre-elastic in nature.
The effect of antibiotic therapy and hospitalization on the external ear canal flora was investigated in 131 children. Fifty-eight percent of the patients receiving antibiotic therapy had Gram-negative bacilli or yeasts in their external ear canal, compared with 17% of the patients who were hospitalized for ten days or longer and only 3% of the patients who were hospitalized for short periods. Antibiotic therapy is the major factor in determining the colonization rate of the external ear canal with potentially pathogenic flora. Children under 1 year of age seem to be the most susceptible group to this shift of flora.
Two families are presented in which affected members had deafness, preauricular sinuses, branchial fistulae and malformation of the external ear. In Family I, a renal abnormality was an associated feature. In Family 2, two individuals had an abnormality of the incudostapedial joint. In both families inheritance was autosomal dominant with variable expressivity. The occurrence of external-ear malformations, branchial fistulae, and preauricular sinuses should indicate the need to search for a hearing loss not only in the patient but amongst relatives.
A brief description of the exposed middle ear from two Swartkrans specimens demonstrates the feasibility of examining the inner auditory structures of existing fossil hominid material. These Swartkrans fossils provide the first clear view of the early hominid middle ear, and their structures appear to be morphologically distinct. The bony anatomy of the external ear of Australopithecus robustus is found to be unique among the South African hominids.
