Perceiving affective content in ambiguous visual stimuli: a component of emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence involves the accurate appraisal and expression of emotions in oneself and others and the regulation of emotion in a way that enhances living. One aspect of emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize the consensually agreed upon emotional qualities of objects in the environment. One hundred thirty-nine adults viewed 18 reproductions of faces, color swatches, and abstract designs and rated the emotional content of these visual stimuli. Three scores were extracted, including consensual accuracy, amount, and range of emotion perceived. These scores were compared with other aspects of emotional intelligence such as empathy and related to constructs such as alexithymia and neuroticism. A general ability to perceive consensual emotional content in visual stimuli was found, and it was most strongly associated with the ability to respond empathically to others.

Election criteria for the adoption of an augmentative communication system: preliminary considerations.

Criteria for determining candidacy for an augmentative communication system are reviewed. Included is a consideration of cognitive, oral reflex, language, motor, intelligibility, emotional, chromological age, previous therapy, imitative, and environmental factors. The multiple factors are arranged on a branching type decision matrix, which yields a decision to either elect, reject, or delay implementation of an augmentative communication system. Case data demonstrating application of the decision matrix are presented.

Factors influencing the enhancement of the new iron triangle in healthcare organisations.

PURPOSE: A new paradigm, "healthcare's new iron triangle," has been developed to emphasise the technological perspective of healthcare delivery, focusing on automation, value and empathy. The study aims to build a conceptual model and to identify factors for the enhancement of the new iron triangle in healthcare organisations. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The healthcare organisation is the primary focus point of the current study. To determine the factors, a survey of the literature and healthcare experts' opinions was conducted. The healthcare professionals validated the identified factors. Data for this study were gathered using a closed-ended questionnaire and scheduled interviews. The study employed "Total Interpretive Structural Modeling methodology and Matriced' Impacts Croise´s Multiplication Appliqué´ a UN Classement/Cross-Impact Matrix Multiplication Applied to a Classification (MICMAC) analysis" to address the "why" and "how" the factors interact and prioritise the identified factors. FINDINGS: The study found that organisational structure (F8), artificial intelligence (F1), innovation (F2) and human resources (F5) are the driving or key factors of the study. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS: The study primarily focused on identifying factors for the enhancement of a new iron triangle in healthcare organisations. The scope could eventually be expanded to explore more areas. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Academics and other stakeholders will have a better understanding of the key drivers for the enhancement of the new iron triangle in healthcare organisations. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: In this study, total interpretive structural modeling and cross-impact MICMAC analysis are proposed as an innovative approach to address the new iron triangle in healthcare organisations.

Physical, psychological, social, and lifestyle differences among adolescents classified according to cigarette smoking intention status.

This study was conducted to determine the extent to which multiple physical, psychological, social, and lifestyle measures differ among high school males classified according to cigarette smoking intention status including nonintenders, mild intenders, and strong intenders. The Physical Performance Test for California, to measure six traits of physical fitness and Cattell's 16PF Questionnaire to assess manifold dimensions of personality were administered to 386 high school males. Self-concept was measured by Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale and body build was assessed using Tucker's Perceived Somatotype Scale and the Body Mass Index. Data relative to marital status of parents, exercise experience, church attendance, participation in athletics, alcohol drinking habits, television viewing behavior, intention to attend college, dating behavior, as well as general demographic information and intention to smoke cigarettes were assessed by a written questionnaire. Results indicated that nonintenders were significantly more self-confident, intelligent, emotionally stable, moralistic, conservative, group oriented, self-controlled, relaxed, and more likely to respond in a socially desirable manner than were strong intenders. Nonintenders reported less dating, less television viewing, less alcohol consumption, and perceived themselves as and were determined to be less obese than strong intenders. Nonintenders also reported greater intentions to attend college, greater varsity athletic participation, were more likely to be residing with their natural mothers, and were more physically fit than were strong intenders. Possible health education and youth smoking prevention strategies are discussed.

Relationships between variations in parents' attitudes and personality traits of hemophilic boys.

Personality traits of hemophilic boys and variations in parental attitudes were assessed by standardized self-report instruments and found to be significantly related, both across personality and for specific traits. Trait values for intelligence, emotional stability, and security were positively linked to parental acceptance. Unlike past clinical reports, parents here scored high in acceptance and low in overprotection and overindulgence.

The Revised Behavior Problem Checklist and severely emotionally disturbed adolescents: relationship to intelligence, academic achievement, and sociometric ratings.

This study explored the relationship among the subscales of the Revised Behavior Problem Checklist and intelligence, academic achievement, and sociometric ratings for a sample of 62 severely emotionally disturbed adolescents enrolled in a special school. A relationship of the Attention Problems-Immaturity subscale with intelligence scores and mathematics achievement was found. Four of six subscales were found to be related to peer sociometric ratings of social acceptance, while only one subscale was related to sociometric ratings of peer acceptance of his/her classmates. These findings are discussed within the context of previous research.

Temperament characteristics of mentally retarded children.

In a comparative study of temperament and intelligence in groups of mentally retarded and normal children, it was found that mentally retarded children who also had excess of psychopathology in them, showed greater signs of 'difficult' child temperament. Relationship between intelligence and emotionality variable of temperament was linear and positive in the mentally retarded children. This study generates the hypothesis that negative mood may be temperamental correlated with mental retardation.
