Biological activity of feijoa peel extracts.

Fractionated extracts of Feijoa peels were studied for cytotoxic activity, anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) activity and antibacterial activity. Two most cytotoxic fractions A3 of acetone extract and M2 of methanol extract had potent inhibitory activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi tested. Fraction A4 of acetone extract showed multidrug resistance (MDR)-reversal activity comparable with that of verapamil (positive control). These results indicate the therapeutic value of Feijoa peel extracts as potential antimicrobial and MDR-modulating agents.

Morphohistological analysis and histochemistry of Feijoa sellowiana somatic embryogenesis.

Morphohistological analysis and histochemical studies were carried out during the induction and development of Feijoa sellowiana somatic embryos. Zygotic embryos were cultured on LPm medium containing 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (20 microM) and glutamine (8 mM). Somatic embryogenesis could be induced from embryogenic cells that originated in meristematic centers or from clusters of cells. The presence of few starch grains and abundant protein bodies was observed in the globular and early torpedo stages, while in torpedo and cotyledonary-stage somatic embryos an enhanced synthesis of starch grains was associated with the accumulation of reserves to be used in the conversion of the embryos to plantlets. Proteins were predominantly observed in protoderm cells, as well as in the meristematic apical region of torpedo and cotyledonary-stage somatic embryos.

Secondary metabolites from the leaves of Feijoa sellowiana Berg.

The investigation of the lipid extract of leaves of Feijoa sellowiana cultivated along the east coast of Sicily has yielded in addition to the widespread secondary metabolites: alpha-tocopherol, flavone, stigmasterol and beta-carotene, an inseparable mixture of tyrosol esters of lignoceric (1a), cerotic (1b) and montanic (1c) acids, and a novel galactolipid identified as (2S)-1,2,6'-tri-O-[(9Z,12Z,15Z)-octadeca-9,12,15-trienoyl]-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl glycerol (2).

Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of Feijoa sellowiana fruit.

The present study was designed to evaluate the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of an aqueous extract from the tropical Feijoa sellowiana Berg. fruit which is widely used for human food. The extract was tested against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria by a broth dilution test and on human whole blood leukocytes, as well as isolated neutrophils using a chemiluminescence (CL) assay. The extract inhibited bacterial growth; Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter aerogenes and Enterobacter cloacae were the most sensitive. The fruit extract significantly decreased CL emission from human whole blood phagocytes and isolated polymorphonuclear leukocytes whether they were activated or not by soluble or phagocytic stimuli. F. sellowiana showed both antibacterial and antioxidant properties and therefore its extract might be used as a new multifaceted drug.

Immunopharmacological properties of flavonoids.

The flavonoids are a heterogeneous group of ubiquitous plant polyphenols that abound in the human diet and are endowed with several biological activities, including immunomodulating and antioxidant activities. The bioactivity of flavonoids is tightly correlated with their chemical structure and action mechanisms, mostly inhibitory, on enzymatic systems involved in cellular activation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of acetonic extracts from Lunularia cruciata gametophytes and Feijoa sellowiana fruits on human phagocyte functions. A purified native flavonoid, a catechin, and two of its derivatives were also tested. The extract, and its flavonoid activity, was evaluated by analyzing luminol-dependent chemiluminescence emitted by human circulating phagocytes, at rest or activated by phorbol miristate acetate (PMA). The results demonstrate that both the raw extracts and flavonoids significantly inhibit CL emission by leukocytes, especially when these cells are activated by PMA. The antioxidant activity of flavonoids can be increased by changing the chemical structure of the native molecule.

Determination of vitamin C and organic acids in various fruits by HPLC.

Liquid chromatographic methodology for determination of vitamin C and organic acids in different fruits (whortleberry, blackberry, red currant, black currant, raspberry, babaco, feijoa, kiwano, passion fruit, red and yellow tamarillos, medlar, and persimmon) cultivated in Galicia, Spain are developed. Both methods use a C18 column and an RP-18 precolumn for the stationary phase. High-performance-liquid-chromatographic-(HPLC-) grade water is brought to pH 2.2 with sulphuric acid for the mobile phase. The flow rate is 0.4 mL/min, and UV detection is at 254 nm for vitamin C and 214 nm for organic acids. Coefficients of variation of 1.84, 1.20, 1.00, and 2.60% are obtained for the vitamin C, quinic acid, malic acid and citric acid, respectively.
