The effect of infinitesimal drug dilutions on the pharmacokinetics of nalidixic acid and atenolol.

1. Ten healthy subjects received two treatments: a single 1 g oral dose of nalidixic acid (NA) followed 1 h later by either an infinitesimal dilution of the drug (NA 7CH) or by succussed water which served as placebo. The study was repeated 18 months later in 10 different subjects. 2. A further 10 healthy subjects received three treatments: a single 100 mg oral dose of atenolol (AT) followed 3 h later by either placebo or a dilution of AT (AT 7CH) or of bisoprolol (BI 7CH). The homoeopathic preparations were administered by the sublingual route. 3. In the first NA experiment NA 7CH significantly shortened the elimination half-life of NA from 8.6 +/- 2.2 (placebo) to 6.4 +/- 1.6 h (NA 7CH). In the second NA experiment none of the pharmacokinetic parameters was modified significantly by the administration of NA 7CH. Neither AT 7CH nor BI 7CH modified the pharmacokinetics of AT.

[The legal status of homeopathic medicines. Quality requirements, registration and permit procedures].

Homeopathic medicaments which are ready for application have to be approved or registered before they can be made available. This procedure is regulated by the "Arzneimittelgesetz (AMG)", a law regulating licensing and registration of medicaments. The commission in charge of the registration and licensing of homeopathic medicaments is the "Aufbereitungskommission D" of the German "Bundesgesundheitsamt (BGA)", the Board of Public Health. Application forms are dealt with on the basis of controlled and non-controlled clinical studies, application observations, and case studies, as well as specialized literature. The commission is trying to do justice to the particular features of the special field of homeopathy.

[Homeopathy].

Homeopathy has been disputed from the early beginning. The rational basis of homeopathy neither can be established by philosophy nor by natural sciences. On one hand homeopathy is supported by so-called 'empirical physicians', but on the other hand it is usually heavily criticized by physicians who are basing their criticism on natural sciences. 'Healing' is meant to prove the hypothesis of all paramedical people, it can however be easily explained on a rational basis. It is indisputable that paramedical manipulations not only may act by placebo effect but also can appear successful due to the remarkable power of our body for self-healing. If latter plays an important role, especially when there is no time limit for healing. We never tried to convince paramedical ideologists, who are already heavily engaged in paramedical treatment, but it is our aim to reassure with solid arguments colleagues, who have so far been overwhelmed by irrational journalism.

[Drugs for special therapies. Demonstration of the effectiveness of homeopathy drugs].

The drugs employed in special types of therapy-phytotherapy, homeopathy, anthroposophic medicines--are being used more and more frequently. In view of the fact that they are equated by law with chemical-synthetic drugs, they must meet the criteria of quality and harmlessness. With respect to effectiveness, the specific peculiarities of these special types of therapy have to be taken into account, and this is illustrated taking homeopathic agents as an example.
