Major ocular glands (harderian gland and lacrimal gland) of the musk shrew (Suncus murinus) with a review on the comparative anatomy and histology of the mammalian lacrimal glands.

The Harderian gland of the musk shrew Suncus murinus is elongated anteroposteriorly from in front of the eye to behind the ear. The gland is divided into two portions: an anterior portion (A portion) and a posterior portion (P portion). The single secretory duct of the gland emerges from the anterior end of the P portion, receives several secretory ducts of the A portion during the course along it, runs around the ventral aspect of the eyeball, and finally opens into the anterior corner of conjunctival sacs. The two portions of the gland show a fundamentally similar histological structure, having a poorly developed intraglandular duct system and wide tubular alveoli. The quantity of lipid vacuoles and stromal connective tissue in the A portion is greater than in the P portion. The lipid vacuoles in both portions are surrounded by unit membranes, but their contents appear different. The lacrimal gland of the musk shrew is located along the ventral side of the P portion of the Harderian gland. The lacrimal duct emerges from its anterior end, runs around the ventral and anterior aspects of the ear, crosses the A portion of the Harderian gland, and finally opens at the posterior corner of conjunctival sacs. The lobules of the lacrimal gland comprise a branched duct system and terminal acini with two types of secretory cells: 1) acidic cells positive both for the periodic acid-Schiff reaction (PAS) and for Alcian blue (AB) and 2) neutral cells positive for PAS and negative for AB. Both cell types tend to make separate acini, but when present in the same acinus, the acidic cells occupy relatively peripheral positions in the acinus. Both cell types lack intercellular canaliculi. On the basis of the present study as well as previous descriptions in the literature, the author suggests that the mammalian lacrimal glands can be divided into two sets: 1) a Glandula lacrimalis superior with multiple secretory ducts associated with the upper eyelid and 2) a Glandula lacrimalis inferior with a single secretory duct opening into the lateral corner of the conjunctival sacs. These glands have a fundamentally similar histological structure; but in the rabbit, which possesses both sets of lacrimal glands, they are different. On the other hand, the secretory cells of lacrimal glands generally have no intercellular secretory canaliculi, which are characteristically present between the serous secretory cells of the salivary glands.

From Sequential Gland Replacement to Recurrent Gland Coordination: A Comparative Framework for Subventral and Dorsal Oesophageal Gland Effectors Across Plant-Parasitic Nematode Lifestyles.

Plant-parasitic nematodes manipulate host tissues through stylet-secreted gene products synthesised principally in two subventral and one dorsal oesophageal gland. Earlier reviews have catalogued effector repertoires, described feeding-site formation, and explained how individual effectors modify host defence, development, and metabolism. However, the temporal coordination of the gland cells themselves has not been comparatively synthesised across parasitic lifestyles. This review therefore advances a gland-centred, lifestyle-dependent framework. In sedentary endoparasites, available evidence supports a pronounced developmental transition: subventral gland products dominate penetration and migration, whereas dorsal gland products become increasingly important during feeding-site initiation and maintenance. Migratory endoparasites repeatedly penetrate, migrate, and feed without establishing permanent feeding cells; their gland activity is consequently predicted to be recurrent and overlapping rather than a one-way replacement. Ectoparasites likewise require behaviour-dependent coordination during repeated probing and external feeding, although direct gland localisation evidence remains limited. We integrate gland origin, secretion chemistry, infection stage, and parasitic behaviour across root-knot, cyst, citrus, false root-knot, lesion, burrowing, and ectoparasitic nematodes. The synthesis distinguishes experimentally demonstrated gland localisation from evidence-weighted inference and formulates testable predictions for comparative gland transcriptomics, spatial expression, and functional silencing. This framework also identifies gland activation, secretion, and stage-critical products as targets for RNA interference, genome editing, resistance breeding, and sustainable nematode management. The principal novelty is therefore not another catalogue of nematode effectors, but a comparative model explaining when and why subventral and dorsal glands exchange, retain, or alternate their functions across contrasting parasitic lifestyles.

Detection of human herpesvirus 6 and human herpesvirus 7 in the submandibular gland, parotid gland, and lip salivary gland by PCR.

In order to define the major sites of persistence of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and HHV-7, PCR with DNAs from more than 100 specimens of 3 different salivary glands was performed. HHV-6 DNA was detected in 52 (88.1%) of 59 submandibular gland, 17 (63.0%) of 27 parotid gland, and 9 (52.9%) of 17 lip salivary gland specimens. On the other hand, HHV-7 DNA was detected in 59 (100%) of 59 submandibular gland, 23 (85.2%) of 27 parotid gland, and 10 (58.8%) of 17 lip salivary gland specimens. These findings demonstrate that salivary glands are a site of persistent infection of both HHV-6 and HHV-7 and that among the three types of salivary gland examined, the submandibular gland is the primary one in which these herpesviruses, especially HHV-7, persist.

Adenocarcinoma of the mammary-like glands of the vulva: a concept unifying sweat gland carcinoma of the vulva, carcinoma of supernumerary mammary glands and extramammary Paget's disease.

An unusual case of primary adenocarcinoma of the vulva is described. It combined features of the three different types of adenocarcinoma of the skin of the vulva which are currently recognized, i.e. sweat gland carcinoma, adenocarcinoma derived from supernumerary mammary glands, and extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD). Central in this tumor was a recently recognized type of cutaneous gland which appeared special for the anogenital region and was distinguished because it combined morphological features of eccrine, apocrine and mammary glands. As it most resembles mammary glands, it is named "mammary-like gland". On the basis of the case presented and of a critical review of the literature, it was concluded that, with the exception of a few sweat gland carcinomas similar to those elsewhere in the skin, adenocarcinomas of the skin of the vulva form a single category of neoplasms with a variable expression of features reminiscent of eccrine, apocrine and mammary gland carcinomas. The data strongly suggested a common derivation from the mammary-like gland or, in cases of EMPD, its related germinative cells in the epidermis.

Transduction of TAT-HA-beta-galactosidase fusion protein into salivary gland-derived cells and organ cultures of the developing gland, and into rat submandibular gland in vivo.

We have studied the transduction of TAT-HA-beta-galactosidase fusion protein into two cell lines of rat salivary gland origin, A5 and C6-21, into cells of fetal mouse submandibular glands in organ culture, and into rat submandibular gland after retrograde duct injection, using a histochemical method to demonstrate beta-galactosidase activity. Transduction of the fusion protein into A5 and C6-21 cells was concentration- and time-dependent. Therefore, the intensity of the beta-galactosidase staining, which was cytoplasmic, was less after 1 hr of exposure compared to exposures up to 24 hr. However, the fusion protein was transduced into 100% of both types of cultured cells. When explants of mouse fetuses at 13 days of gestation were exposed to the fusion proteins, both epithelial and mesenchymal cells were stained for the enzyme, with a conspicuous accumulation of the reaction product at perinuclear cytoplasmic regions. The histochemical staining of the mesenchymal cells was more intense compared to that seen in epithelial cells. TAT-HA-beta-galactosidase fusion protein was also delivered to rat submandibular glands by retrograde duct injection. Histochemical staining for beta-galactosidase activity of cryostat sections prepared from the injected glands revealed that the transduction of the fusion protein was also time- and dose-dependent. In the glands of rats sacrificed from 10 min to 1 hr after the retrograde injection, essentially all acinar and duct cells showed cytoplasmic staining. The intensity of the staining then declined, and was not seen in the glands of rats killed 24 hr after the injection of the fusion proteins. These results indicate that a full-length, active TAT fusion protein can be targeted to salivary gland cells both in vitro and in vivo to analyze physiological, developmental, and pathophysiological processes.

Biochemical analyses on single amphidial glands, excretory-secretory gland cells, pharyngeal glands and their secretions from the avian nematode Syngamus trachea.

The gape nematode, Syngamus trachea, has been used as a model to study nematode secretions. Individual and intact pairs of amphidial glands, pharyngeal glands and pairs of excretory-secretory gland cells have been dissected and their secretory products analysed. The protein profiles of each gland and the total nematode secretions were analysed on 12.5% homogeneous SDS-PAGE minigels. The protein analyses revealed that the structural protein profile of each gland is different. The amphidial gland secretes two major proteins of 36.0 and 41.5 kDa, the excretory-secretory gland cell secretes a protein of 28.2 kDa and a protein of 14.3 kDa, and the pharyngeal gland secretes proteins of 41.5 and 14.6 kDa. Analysis of the total nematode secretions revealed all of the above major secretory proteins and an additional protein of 49.3 kDa. Syngamus trachea secretes acetylcholinesterases and its secretions contain multiple proteases.

Anogenital "sweat" glands. Histology and pathology of a gland that may mimic mammary glands.

A new variant of cutaneous glands is described that occurs in the anogenital region, with its highest concentration in the interlabial sulcus of the vulva. The glands are characterized by a wide coiled tube from which originate acini, diverticula, and short branches; a lining of a compact simple columnar epithelium with prominent cytoplasmic snouts protruding into the lumen; and a broad mantle of loose fibromyxoid to dense collagenous connective tissue. Occasionally, true lobuli are formed resembling those of mammary glands. A close relationship to eccrine glands was evidenced by intermediate variants and the occasional observation of typical eccrine segments in otherwise characteristic anogenital glands. The glands revealed periodic changes of epithelium and stroma. Their strict localization around the derivatives of the embryonic cloacal entrance suggests a possible role in sexual functions. Their characteristic histology links and explains a series of disorders of the anogenital region in women (including functional vulvar mammary glands after pregnancy, fibrocystic disease, fibroadenoma, hidradenoma papilliferum, and some cases of adenocarcinoma, including Paget's disease) and in men [including fibroadenoma or apocrine cystadenoma, and cases of Paget's disease].

[Changes in the mammary glands, adrenal glands and thyroid gland in young female rats after castration and administration of sex hormones and hydrocortisone].

Experiments were conducted on young female rats with the aid of morphological, morphometric and histochemical methods; a study was made of the adrenal glands, mammary and the thyroid glands under conditions of castration and administration of synestrol, progesterone, both sex hormones, hydrocortisone. Sex hormones proved to produce a fulminant growth of the glandular tree against the background of reduction of the functional activity of the thyroid gland and relatively high indices of the hormonal activity of the fasciculo-reticular zone of the adrenal glands. A harmonious development of the glandular tree of the mammary glands was noted only under the effect of a simultaneous administration of synesterol and progesteron. A shift in the hormonal balance in the direction of synestrol caused the appearance of pathological deviations in the mammary glands by the type of cystic mastopathy. Under conditions of castration hydrocortisone produced a moderate stimulating influence on the mammary glands only in case of a prolonged action.

[Immunohistochemical studies of normal sweat glands, sweat gland tumors and extramammary Paget's disease. I. Immunohistochemical studies of normal sweat glands].

Localizations of 18 antigens in normal sweat glands were analyzed. The antigens were roughly classified into 8 antigens: 1) distributed throughout the epithelial cells; 2) localized in whole sweat glands; 3) localized only in the secretory portion of sweat glands; 4) localized only in the inner cells of ductal portion of sweat glands; 5) localized in the myoepithelial cells; 6) localized only in the outer cells of dermal ducts of eccrine glands; 7) localized only seen in some of apocrine glands; 8) seen in the inflamed sweat glands. Based on these findings, I discussed about the forms and meanings of localization of those antigens.

Expression of S-100 protein and glial fibrillary acidic protein in cultured submandibular gland epithelial cells and salivary gland tissues. Histogenetic implication for salivary gland tumors.

S-100 protein and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) were studied in human salivary gland tissues and human cultured submandibular gland epithelial cells. Immunohistochemically, ductal cells in normal salivary gland tissues were positive for S-100 protein and GFAP, but myoepithelial cells were uniformly negative. Immunocytochemically, cultured submandibular gland ductal cells were positive for S-100 protein and GFAP. By immunoblotting analysis of the cultured cell lysates, a 6.5-kd S-100 protein was detected. This band corresponded to S-100 protein purified from bovine brain. The cultured submandibular gland cells expressed 49- and 54-kd GFAP polypeptides. These results have important implications for the histogenesis of salivary gland tumors.

Malignant epithelial tumors in the minor salivary glands, the submandibular gland, and the sublingual gland. Prognostic factors and treatment results.

Ninety-five malignant tumors in the submandibular gland, the sublingual gland, and the minor salivary glands seen in a 25-year period were reviewed. The patients were retrospectively staged using the Union Internationale Contre le Cancer (UICC) classification. The most frequent tumor was adenoid cystic carcinoma, followed by adenocarcinoma. The submandibular gland was the most frequent location. Five-year and 10-year crude survival rates were 62% and 43%, respectively. Clinical stage was the most important prognostic factor. Survival was not correlated with location of tumor, although recurrence and metastases occurred more frequently in patients with cancer of the submandibular gland. Histologically, the 5-year and 10-year survival was significantly better for patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma compared with the other types; however, although still significant, this difference diminished at 10 years, confirming the need for a long observation time for patients with this tumor.

Pancreatic duct glands. II. Lectin binding affinities of ductular epithelium, ductular glands, and Brunner glands.

Secretory epithelia and ductular glands were studied in main pancreatic ducts of guinea pig, rabbit, rat, and man. Brunner glands were studied for comparison. Semithin sections from Epon-embedded tissues were etched with sodium methylate and incubated with horseradish peroxidase-conjugated lectins. Columnar cells in the epithelium of pancreatic ducts are endowed with well-developed microvillar borders. These apical regions strongly stain with Lotus A-, wheat germ-, and Ricinus I-lectins. Basolateral plasma membranes bind Ricinus I-, Ulex europaeus I-, and wheat germ-lectins. Cytosomes in the supranuclear regions of epithelial cells are interpreted as secretory granules. These droplets are marked by wheat germ-lectin and to a lesser degree by Ricinus I- and Ulex europaeus I-lectins. Ductular glands of the main pancreatic ducts contain secretions that bind Helix-, wheat germ-, and Ulex europaeus I-lectins. Their apical and basolateral cell membranes deeply stain with wheat germ- and Ulex europaeus I-lectins. Secretions of Brunner glands bind Ricinus I-, Ulex europaeus I-, Helix-, and wheat germ lectins. Their apical and basolateral cell membranes stain with Ricinus I- and wheat germ-lectins. - Species differences in lectin-binding affinities of complex carbohydrates were observed and are described.

[Allometry and linear correlation coefficients binding the volumes of the different pituitary gland lobes, of the pituitary gland, of the subfornical organ and of the pineal gland to body weight and to hypothalamic volume in Rodents and in a Lagomorphe].

The morphometric study of the hypophysis, of the subfornical organ and of the pineal gland of 41 Rodents and one Lagomorphe shows that the anterior lobe of the hypophysis as well as the total hypophysis are better correlated to body weight than to the volume of the hypothalamus, while it is the contrary for the pars nervosa. The volume of the intermediate lobe varies very much from one species to another for the same body weight. The high value of the allometry coefficient of the pineal gland on somatic weight (1.25) is due to the fact that the heavy Rodents of our temperate climates have a large epiphysis while the small african Rodents possess a small pineal gland.

[Peptidergic innervation of human salivary glands (parotid gland and submandibular gland)].

Immunocytochemistry and a radioimmunoassay were used to investigate the existence and distributions of various regulatory peptide immunoreactivities (ir) in human submandibular and parotid glands. Numerous nerve fibers containing vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and peptide histidine methionine (PHM), or neuropeptide tyrosine (NPY) and C-flanking peptide of NPY (CPON)-ir were found in close proximity to acini, ducts and blood vessels. Only a few calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)- and substance P (SP)-ir nerve fibers could be demonstrated and were mainly localized around blood vessels and ducts. Galanin and the recently discovered peptides helospectin and pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide were unable to be detected in the salivary glands studied. Preliminary quantitative investigations of four human submandibular glands using radioimmunoassay showed that VIP-ir had the highest concentration, followed by NPY-ir and CGRP-ir; SP-concentrations were below the detection limit. The possible physiological significance of these peptides for salivary secretion is discussed.
