Using the Internet to achieve purchasing improvements at General Electric.

This article presents a case study of how General Electric's Lighting Division has used the Internet to dramatically improve purchasing and logistics performance. By applying new techniques and technologies, including an Internet-based "Trading Process Network," GE Lighting has achieved substantial benefits, including cycle time reduction, elimination of paper and mail processing, improved information sharing with suppliers, quality improvement, and cost reduction.

Physical model for photon beams used on the General Electric Target radiotherapy treatment planning system.

The tabulated measured data model for external photon beam planning used on the General Electric Target system is very powerful, allowing fast and accurate calculations and is extended to incorporate complex planning techniques. This approach is ideally suited for the incorporation of correction factors, defined at any point as the ratio of the dose in an inhomogeneous phantom to the dose in a homogeneous phantom. The correction factor can be determined using techniques such as a generalized Batho power law or the equivalent tissue air ratio method, and the dose in an homogeneous phantom is taken from the measured data tables. The use of tabulated data gives the benefits of very fast calculation times and, when required, the accuracy of sophisticated scatter corrections. The basic model and methods of correcting for inhomogeneities are described. The extension of the two-dimensional model to a three-dimensional model for non-coplanar treatment planning retains the basic principles of the 2D model.

Tech vendors getting fiscal. General Electric Co. is leading the way with an array of services, from capital and equipment to consulting over quality, efficiency.

General Electric Co. and other technology vendors see a golden opportunity in cash-strapped hospital clients. By also offering financing and consulting services, they're helping their providers stay in the game long enough to pay them back for their high-tech goods, and come back for more. GE's Rick Wolfert says, "We have reason to believe we either are or soon will be the leading provider."

General Electric Co. v. Joiner: lighting up the post-Daubert landscape?

The U.S. Supreme Court considered an appeal by the defendant, General Electric Co., in a products liability action. The appeal resulted from the ruling by the Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit that overturned the district court's exclusion of evidence of cancer causation. The Supreme Court held that questions of the admissibility of such evidence are reviewable under the same standard--abuse of discretion--as are other decisions regarding evidentiary issues and are not subject to a more stringent standard of review. The Court further held that whether or not the evidence is excluded or is dispositive of the case does not change this standard of review. The Court then examined and upheld the decision by the trial court rather than remanding the action to the circuit court for reconsideration in light of the decision. Coupled with a series of recent circuit court of appeals decisions, the case establishes some guidance for the basis and methodology to be used to admit social science evidence in future cases.

Dynamic exercise imaging with an MR-compatible stationary cycle within the general electric open magnet.

Many cases of muscular ischemia do not manifest without increased metabolic demand. Hence, diagnosis of intermittent claudication often requires inducing physiologic challenge, such as by exercise. Cine phase-contrast MRI can concurrently acquire cross-sectional vascular anatomy and through-plane blood velocities, enabling blood flow rate quantification. An MR-compatible stationary cycle was designed, constructed, and tested for flow quantification in large arteries during lower-limb exercise in a General Electric Signa SP 0.5 T open magnet. The cycle demonstrated smooth cycling during image acquisition, has freewheeling capability, is adjustable for subject size and strength, and can quantify workload. A healthy 59-year-old male was imaged at the supraceliac and infrarenal levels of the abdominal aorta at rest and during exercise. An exercise workload of 47.9 W was achieved. His heart rate increased from 52 to 78 bpm, supraceliac flow increased from 1.7 to 3.7 L/min, and infrarenal flow increased from 0.4 to 3.2 L/min from rest to exercise.

Neutron source strength measurements for Varian, Siemens, Elekta, and General Electric linear accelerators.

The shielding calculations for high energy (>10 MV) linear accelerators must include the photoneutron production within the head of the accelerator. Procedures have been described to calculate the treatment room door shielding based on the neutron source strength (Q value) for a specific accelerator and energy combination. Unfortunately, there is currently little data in the literature stating the neutron source strengths for the most widely used linear accelerators. In this study, the neutron fluence for 36 linear accelerators, including models from Varian, Siemens, Elekta/Philips, and General Electric, was measured using gold-foil activation. Several of the models and energy combinations had multiple measurements. The neutron fluence measured in the patient plane was independent of the surface area of the room, suggesting that neutron fluence is more dependent on the direct neutron fluence from the head of the accelerator than from room scatter. Neutron source strength, Q, was determined from the measured neutron fluences. As expected, Q increased with increasing photon energy. The Q values ranged from 0.02 for a 10 MV beam to 1.44(x10(12)) neutrons per photon Gy for a 25 MV beam. The most comprehensive set of neutron source strength values, Q, for the current accelerators in clinical use are presented for use in calculating room shielding.

Generalized electrical analysis of low-pass and high-pass birdcage resonators.

The radio-frequency 'birdcage resonator' has found wide use in MRI/MRS for its field homogeneity and signal-noise characteristics. This paper presents a general analysis, derived from lumped element transmission line theory, of the electrical behavior of unloaded, N-column birdcage resonators applicable to several versions of the basic design including low-pass and high-pass coils. Analytic expressions and computer results are presented for both types of coil describing resonant frequencies, input and characteristic impedances, dispersion relations, pass-bands, resonant peak bandwidth and Q. Theoretical expressions for normalized resonant frequency difference ratios independent of element values and resonator geometry have been developed for generic low- and high-pass coils. Experimental measurements of resonant frequencies were made for six coils, and the average agreement with theoretical predictions was approximately 4%.

Measurements of the generalized electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the proton at low Q2 using the virtual-compton-scattering reaction.

The mean square polarizability radii of the proton have been measured for the first time in a virtual-Compton-scattering experiment performed at the MIT-Bates out-of-plane scattering facility. Response functions and polarizabilities obtained from a dispersion analysis of the data at Q2 = 0.057 GeV2/c2 are in agreement with O(p3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The data support the dominance of mesonic effects in the polarizabilities.

Radiation dose to the lens of the eye during computerised tomography examinations of the orbit, the pituitary fossa and the brain on a General Electric 9800 Quick C.T. scanner.

A phantom simulating the lens of the eye has been used during estimation of the radiation dose to the lens of the eye during C.T. scanning of the orbit, pituitary fossa and brain. Routine scanning will deliver a dose to the lens which is many times less than the threshold for cataracts. However the potential exists to use techniques which will increase the dose substantially. Repeat examinations of this sort could theoretically exceed the threshold dose required to induce cataracts in the lens.

Request of General Electric Company to exempt medical diagnostic equipment from the Commission's rules--Federal Communications Commission. Report & Order in Gen. Docket 81-461.

This Order establishes an exemption for certain electronic medical equipment from FCC regulations designed to minimize radio interference caused by devices that employ digital circuitry. The costs of testing for compliance with specific emissions limits would be severe and most medical equipment has characteristics which inherently reduce the likelihood of interference. The Commission in this action amends the rules to relieve the compliance burden.
