Visceral radioisotopic lymphography of the testicle.

Scintigraphic studies made in 75 patients, respectively on 130 testicles with the aid of the organ radio-isotopic lymphography enabled to determine more exactly the location and the variety of the testicular lymph centers. It should be pointed out that in 58.5% of the patients the lymph centers are situated on the left of the middle line and only in 6.1% on the right. In some cases iliac lymph nodes were demonstrable. Attempts were made to use this method in investigation of the patients with malignant tumours of the testicles.

Gold Colloid, Radioactive

Gold and thiol compounds in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis: excretory fate and tissue distribution of thiomalate in relation to gold after administration of myocrisin (auro-thiomalate).

Double isotope-labelled auro thiomalate (Au195-C14-thiomalate) has been administered to mice and rats, and the excretory fate and tissue distribution have been studied. The results show that the gold and the thiomalate separate in vivo resulting in protein-bound gold and release of free thiomalate. About half of this thiol is excreted in the urine during the first day and the remaining half is taken up by the tissues. Thiomalate penetrates cellular membranes poorly, but is able to interact slowly with proteins (mixed disulphide formation). Part of the thiomalate which remains in the body is membrane bound. In contrast to penicillamine little thiomalate remains in circulation a few hours after administration. Gas chromatography--mass spectrometry has been used to search for the presence of free thiomalate in rheumatoid arthritis patients on Myocrisin (auro thiomalate) therapy. Thiomalate was found in their urine, but not in serum and synovial fluid 20 hours after administration. As thiomalate is released in the body after administration of Myocrisin. the question arises whether this thiol, like penicillamine, may have a beneficial effect in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Influence of dose rate on carcinogenesis resulting from x-ray, 113In, and 198Au irradiation.

The potential hazards from internally administered radionuclides used in nuclear medicine are usually compared with one another and with diagnostic x-rays on the basis of the absorbed dose in rads, with no regard to the dose rate of the radiation. This study compared the carcinogenic potential of a dose of 250 rads delivered at different dose rates to rat livers by x-ray, 113mIn, and 198Au. The chemical carcinogen N-2-fluorenyldiacetamide was administered after irradiation to reduce the latent period and increase the number of radiogenic liver tumors. No significant difference in tumor incidence was observed among groups of animals treated with either 198Au, 113mIn, or x-irradiation.

2-Acetylaminofluorene

Quantitation of gold lymphocyte binding during chrysotherapy.

Carbon rod atomic absorption analysis (CRA) was applied to the quantiation of gold lymphocyte content (GLC) during chrysotherapy. Sensitivity and accuracy of CRA compared favorably with 195Au isotopic scintillation counting, circumventing the limitations and hazards of the latter in clinical applications. Picogram gold quantification of limited sample volume, less than 10 ml blood, e.g., 10(4)-10(5) lymphocytes (5 microliters) containing 5-10 pg was achieved. GLC after IM administration increased significantly in 60% of patients; for the remainder, GLC was observed to be independent of plasma gold content or cumulative dosage. GLC during auranofin administration (6 mg/day p.o.) approached values for IM gold despite significantly lower plasma levels. Unique sensitivity of CRA enables analysis of GLC under therapeutic conditions that could elucidate whether gold alters functional determinants.

Arthritis, Rheumatoid

[Progress in the surgical treatment of cervix carcinoma].

The radioisotope radical operation may cause an improvement of results in carcinoma of the cervix stage I b, II, and IV. The increased yield of lymph nodes enables a more reliable prognosis in advanced cases. Recurrent tumors at the pelvic wall may be detected earlier by isotope nephrography.

Radioactive colloidal solutions and suspensions for medical use.

Radioactive colloidal solutions and suspensions are being widely used in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. The author considers the behaviour or radioactive disperse preparations in the body and devotes particular attention to the reasons for isotope transition from the colloidal to the ionic state. Questions concerned with producing and investigating radioactive colloidal solutions are discussed. In the light of the physical and chemical properties of the radioisotopes and of the disperse systems themselves, the author considers methods of producing the more important radioactive disperse preparations: colloidal solutions of noble metals; colloidal solutions containing phosphorus-32, yttrium-90 and isotopes of the rare-earth elements; colloidal solutions with with indium-113m, gallium-68, technetium-99m and rhenium-186; suspensions (macroaggregates and microspheres) for the diagnosis of lung diseases; and radioactive colloidal solutions based on quaternary ammonium base compounds.

[Incidence of hepatic metastases of breast cancer. Scintigraphic study with radiocolloids in 111 patients].

The anatomical and physiological premises of liver scintigraphy with radiocolloids as a useful study in patients suffering from various stages of breast cancer are analysed. A series of 111 cases is then reported. The technique was used on these cases one or more times and revealed the presence of a scintigraphic picture suggesting liver metastasis in 36% of cases (27.5% at first observation). These data proved higher than those previously reported in the literature by other workers. The technique is therefore proposed as a routine investigation in patients suffering from breast cancer.

Demonstration of the existence of canine prostatic lymphatics by radioisotope techniques.

Radioactive 198Au colloid injected into the canine prostate through an opened bladder to avoid violating the prostatic capsule was observed to migrate from the prostate to the regional lymph nodes. Significant isotope uptake in the kidney, liver, rectus muscle and distant lymph nodes was not detected, thus indicating direct spread of the isotope to the regional lymph nodes.

[Scanning the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord following endolumbar and cisternal administration of colloid solutions of radioisotopes].

The patency of the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord was studied by means of radioisotopes in 82 patients, among whom 18 had tumors of the spinal cord, 22 had herniation of the intervertebral disk, 18 had complicated fractures of the spine, and 11 had inflammatory diseases of the spinal cord and its meninges. Colloidal solutions of 198Au, 111In, and 131I were used for endolumbar and cisternal infusion. Scanning of the vertebral canal provides for the diagnosis of the level, degree, and extent of its compression caused by various vertebro-medullary pathologic conditions. The method is sparing, minimum doses of isotopes are used, and no complications are produced.
