Ballistocardiography in sanatorial and health resort rehabilitation of patients after myocardial infarction.

A sanatorial and health resort rehabilitation was carried out in patients after myocardial infarction. The rehabilitation program included exercise therapy and carbonic acid baths. The ballistocardiographic studies conducted with a diagnostic purpose indicate that carbonic acid balneotherapy may be used in patients after the third month following the onset of myocardial infarction. Clinico-physiological investigations indicate that ballistocardiography may serve to control the effectiveness of sanatorial and health resort rehabilitation and to determine the mechanism of action of the physical factors involved.

[Health resort treatment of children with progressive muscular dystrophy].

The results of a complex treatment at health resorts of 126 children with Duchenne myopathy and 84 children with spinal amyotrophies at the age of 5-15 years are given. The complexes included carbon-dioxide sulfurated hydrogen baths, mud application (with different localization depending on a form of the disease), fresh baths, oxygenotherapy and therapeutic physical training. The authors revealed good tolerance to procedures and the positive dynamics of the main clinical manifestations of the disease, confirmed by the electrophysiological and biochemical studies. As a result of the treatment it was possible to achieve progressiveness of the disease in all patients at different periods (from 1 month to 1 year). The authors give recommendations for the use of treatment at health resorts as a necessary link in the general chain of rehabilitative measures for children with various forms of progressive muscular dystrophies.

[Physical training and sports exercises within the framework of an early rehabilitation programme at a health resort (author's transl)].

The article reports on early rehabilitation measures carried out at a health resort on nearly 4000 patients with signs of "wear and tear", degenerative and other changes of the musculo-skeletal system as well as insufficiencies of cardiovascular system. Provided the preliminary diagnostic examinations are carried out and medical supervision ensured physical training and sports become increasingly important as integral parts of an active treatment plan including natural healing methods. Sport-physiological experiences have, however, shown that a real and measurable positive training effect can only be achieved if these components are administered in the correct dosages. This holds particularly true if a wide spectrum of gymnastic and sports exercises is offered - primarily in groups and under professional supervision - which are not only intended to increase physical capacity, but also respond to individual inclinations. Thus, in addition to its therapeutic value, early rehabilitation at a health resort can provide the feeling of achievement appropriate to give the rehabilitees new impulses at home. As a consequence, these programmes make a positive contribution to the well-being of the general public.

[Phenologic observations of the Rabka health resort in 1990].

Important factors decisive of the health resort's climatic characteristics are the results of aero-phenologic studies. These results take in account the different pollinating seasons of various plants, grasses and weeds. Quantification and qualification of air pollination using the volume method with a Burkhard analytical device. Basing on results the authors have found increasing pollination string from March. At his time the main pollens come from birch, hazel, alder, weeping willow. The concentration of these pollens decrease in April, completely diminishing in May. Grass pollens increase in mid-May, peaking in June to early August. Pine pollens are found in May and June. A characteristic feature of the phenologic calendar is pollination of grass and pines in the same period (late May and June). The results of this are seen in children treated at the Mother and Child Institute Branch in Rabka, who demonstrate increased signs of pollinosis. The results of this study should modify treatment and change prophylaxis in children treated in Rabka.

[10-year experience with the health resort treatment of eye diseases].

Presented are the kinds of ocular diseases which can be qualified for a health-resort therapy and the kinds of measures the most beneficial in particular cases. After the cure an improvement in the condition of the eyes was found in 68 p.c. of cases. On the basis of results one may conclude that the rehabilitating health-resort treatment is worth to be suggested.

[Adaptation reaction to the health resort treatment in patients with diabetes mellitus].

Physical, clinical, biochemical, and functional examinations have been carried out in 70% of patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 treated in health resorts. Patients were treated with diet, drugs, and physiotherapy during a 3-5-week period. It was found, that the whole period of the treatment may be divided into 3 subperiods: period I is characterized by the subjective symptoms produced by the process of adaptation to different environment. This period lasts for 4 days, on average. Periods II and III are characterized by the set of symptoms reflecting a sum of therapeutical physical stimuli. Such symptoms are known in the literature as bath- or spa-reaction. Symptoms of spa-reaction were noted in about 50% of the examined patients. In 21% of them late reaction, i.e. after about 3 weeks, was seen. No worsening of diabetes mellitus was observed during spa-reaction. No correlation between the onset of this reaction and duration of the disease as well as the results of therapy was found. However, spa-reaction was more frequent in the elderly. Period III was followed by the decrease of the symptoms of spa-reaction with marked improvement in glycaemia. Authors' observations lead to some practical conclusions concerning the programs of physiotherapy in dependence on the course of patients' adaptation to the spa. Regulations concerning the routine 24-day treatment period of all patients in health resorts should be revised.

[The hemodynamics of the brain and eye in patients with presenile and senile nonexudative central chorioretinal dystrophy during health resort treatment].

Rheographic studies of the cerebral and ocular hemodynamics carried out in patients with presenile and senile nonexudative central chorioretinal dystrophies over a 26-day course of multiple-modality health resort treatment revealed left-side asymmetry of the earlier and more marked injuries of the ocular membranes and the carotid system, a low rheographic index of the carotid system as early as in the first stage of the disease. The findings evidence improvement of the brain and eye hemodynamics in the course of treatment, this being conducive to improvement of the ocular function during all stages of the disease. The most dynamic parameters were the rheo-ophthalmographic coefficient in the patients with all stages of the disease and the rheographic index of the central cerebral artery in those with Stages I and II maculodystrophy. Assessment of these parameters in the course of health resort therapy of the retinal conditions mentioned will help assess the treatment efficacy.

[The early rehabilitation of patients, operated on for peptic ulcer and cholelithiasis, at Mirgorod health resort].

The authors analyzed the condition of 51 patients in the early period of operation for ulcer and cholelithiasis. It was found that most patients showed asthenic, dyspeptic and pam syndromes, anemia, hypoacidic or achylous gastritis, inflammation at the operative site. As a result of treatment at the Mirgorod health resort (physiotherapy, mineral water) there occurred a significant improvement in the patients' condition. It is concluded that rehabilitation of patients following surgical intervention on the 20th day of operation for ulcer and cholelithiasis at the Mirgorod health resort has good perspectives.

[Experiences in incidence monitoring and control of the Pharaoh ant in a health resort].

Today Monomorium pharaonis still represents a threat of the hygiene regime in the objects of Public Health and Welfare, particularly for the asepsis and the "Black-White-Separation". The experiences collected throughout a successful rub out by the preparate "Lafarex N 87" in a health-resort are presented. The necessity of cooperation of all concerned persons (owners, pest control enterprises and Public Hygiene Service) are emphasized.

[The use of iodobromine water on patients with periodontitis at a health resort].

The technique of iodobromine water irrigations of the oral cavity in periodontitis has been developed to be used at health resorts of Anapa. A total of 4650 patients aged 25 to 52 with periodontitis of varying severity were treated; mineral water irrigations were preceded by removal of dental deposit. The treatment efficacy was assessed by functional methods: electrothermometry and rheography.
