[Industrial standards of hose assemblies for use with medical gas systems: safety against collapsing loads].

We experienced troubles caused by mounting an anesthesia machine and a pump oxygenator on an oxygen pressure-resistant hose that connected the central piping system with the anesthesia machine. Therefore, we measured the resistance of 9 types of hose assemblies to collapsing loads by the method in the International Standardization Organization (ISO) 5359. Two types of hose made in the U.S. were highly resistant. On the other hand, 7 types of domestic hose tended to be obstructed with collapsing loads, and 3 of them did not fulfill ISO's criteria. To prevent anesthetic accidents, improvements in the property of hose assemblies and the establishment of their industrial standardization are urgently needed.

[Comparative material testing of dental impression and articulation plasters according to German Industrial Standard DIN 13911].

The purpose of the present investigation was a comparison of three special articulation plasters and three impression plasters. As DIN 13911 does not refer to articulation plasters, the inspection as well as the testing of pouring time, setting time, setting expansion and compressive strength using standard and manufacturer's consistence as carried out conforming to the guidelines for impression plasters. None of the tested plasters could meet the requirements of inspection in all points. Considering the physical parameters all plasters are up to standard, while Alpa quickstone and Arti-Plaster exhibited very low expansion and high compressive strength values. Although the compressive strength standard needs redefining, the value of a standardized testing technique for dental plasters is evident.

Real-time respiratory monitoring workstation--software and hardware engineering aspects.

We have applied advanced real-time techniques in software, that are intensively used in critical areas like space research and defence applications, to realise an Integrated Real-Time Respiratory Monitoring System at the Thorax Anesthesiology, Academic Hospital Rotterdam. The system is called the 'SERVO WINDOW'--a window to the servo ventilator. The heart of the system is a real-time kernel that uses preemptive scheduling to achieve multitasking on a IBM PC compatible hardware platform. To the clinician this means that he gets all relevant information from one source i.e. the Respiratory Workstation. The waveforms of the airway pressure, airway flow and the expired CO2 curve are displayed continuously on the screen. The Vector Loops like Pressure Volume, Flow Pressure and Flow Volume loops are also available in addition to the lung mechanics parameters like Expiratory and Inspiratory Resistances, Compliances, Peak Pressure, PEEP, etc. The Single Breath Diagram i.e. expired CO2 concentration versus volume and dead space ventilation is also calculated. The blood gas analysis data is plotted in convenient diagrams like the O2-CO2 diagram, Oxygen Chart, etc. The trend of all these parameters are available with a granularity of one minute. An industry standard laser printer is used for report generation to produce reports of the real-time waveforms, parameter values and the trends. User interface is through easy menus with the traditional keyboard, touchscreen including keyboard on screen for data entry and the mouse.

Proposal of a computerized algorithm for continuous wave CO2 laser on-line control during orthopaedic surgery. Phase I: theoretical introduction and first in vitro trials.

New data obtained from treating polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) with a non-moving cw- 10 watt-CO2 laser-beam focused at 2.5'', 5'', 7.5'' and 15.75'' are presented. . The final equations R(tc) and Z(tc) for each focal length are proposed. A very interesting correlation between the focal lengths in use and the integrated values of R and Z between 0 and 2 sec has been identified and discussed. This result has been used as basis to define a convenient operative protocol to follow during the planning phase of critical osteotomies or bone cement removal operations using a continuous-wave CO2 laser-beam set to any output power and focused by a set of most common, moving or non-moving focal lengths placed on the operating area. With a simple equation, it is possible to compare craters obtained with moving and non-moving laser-beams at different operative conditions between 0 and 2 sec, time interval which covers the majority of cases. A value of 2.3 +/- 0.1 between ablated volumes of PMMA and bone tissue has been identified. Several case studies regarding orthopaedic procedures from Literature are here reported and compared to the present LCA model. The computerized on-line flow of information for the laser-beam optimization and safety control is also described. Finally, a method for the simultaneous data collection from several operating rooms via a Local Area Network (LAN-Industry Standard IEEE) onto a central data base for later consultation is proposed in its general design.

[Hardware for graphics systems].

In all personal computer applications, be it for private or professional use, the decision of which "brand" of computer to buy is of central importance. In the USA Apple computers are mainly used in universities, while in Europe computers of the so-called "industry standard" by IBM (or clones thereof) have been increasingly used for many years. Independently of any brand name considerations, the computer components purchased must meet the current (and projected) needs of the user. Graphic capabilities and standards, processor speed, the use of co-processors, as well as input and output devices such as "mouse", printers and scanners are discussed. This overview is meant to serve as a decision aid. Potential users are given a short but detailed summary of current technical features.

Development of software for pulse oximeter and investigation of its realtime response in clinical environment.

We developed a pulse oximeter software at Thorax Centre, Erasmus University as a joint project with an industry and evaluated it in the clinical environment of thorax anaesthesia using a computerized protocol for realtime data collection during routine clinical procedures. This paper gives an account of the results we obtained from the development project and the clinical study. The paper consists of two parts. First part describes different components of the software module and their influence on different aspects of the clinical behaviour of the oximeter. The second part describes the results of realtime response investigation. The investigation was carried out using a personal computer to collect the data continuously during anaesthesia, surgery and post-operative periods. Two other industry standard oximeters, Nellcor and Ohmeda were also included in our study. We collected data on more than fifty patients on an average of eight hours per patient over a period of four months with major emphasis on low-saturation occurrences. The interpretation of the data was focused more on the realtime response anomalies on random cases than on ensemble statistical data evaluation. We found, that there are few factors in clinical environment which often influences the measurement of a pulse oximeter very strongly. Most often the anomalies were found during low saturation measurement. The main objective of this paper is to make the results available to practising clinicians so that it may be useful to identify these occurrences during routine clinical usage.

Evaluation of bone preparation approaches using length-based analysis and targeted sequencing for forensic human identification of historic skeletal remains.

Advances in DNA technology have significantly enhanced the forensic community's ability to develop genetic profiles from unidentified human skeletal remains. However, sampling requires mechanical grinding of hard tissues before DNA isolation. This processing can compromise genetic profiles, particularly in aged bones. We compared the industry-standard pulverization method with an alternative powder-free preparation involving prolonged demineralization and subsequent slicing of 19th-century cortical bone. Data from DNA quantification, STR genotyping, and targeted SNP sequencing were used to evaluate powdered samples versus demineralized slices from paired human bones. Average human DNA yields for pulverized samples and demineralized slices were 0.032 ng and 0.692 ng, respectively. Demineralized slices recovered more amplifiable DNA than traditional homogenization methods (p < 0.05). No pulverized samples produced STR profiles, whereas demineralized slices from the same bone samples yielded partial profiles. Samples underwent DNA repair, library preparation, and hybridization capture using the FORensic Capture Enrichment (FORCE) panel. Applying low-coverage (1X) analysis of high-throughput sequencing (HTS) data, demineralized slices outperformed those prepared by traditional pulverization methods (p < 0.05) and substantially increased the information recovered compared with conventional STR analysis methods. Based on HTS data from pulverized samples, DNA fragment length ranged from 27 to 95 bp, and FORCE SNP recovery was 33.23%. In contrast, for demineralized slices, DNA fragment length ranged from 85 to 114 bp, and FORCE SNP recovery was 83.24%. The required reagents and equipment are typically available in forensic labs, and the workflow outlined herein significantly increases the success of DNA recovery from challenging skeletal samples.

[Empirical Classification of Tri-Allelic Genotype Cases and Parentage Index Calculation].

OBJECTIVES: To standardize the calculation method of the parentage index (PI) for short tandem repeat (STR) tri-allelic genotypes, thereby ensuring the accuracy and reliability of parentage tes‑ ting conclusions. METHODS: A systematic analysis of 160 real cases was conducted. A classification system was constructed based on the occurrence mechanisms and inheritance patterns of STR tri-alleles, and the PI calculation method was optimized by integrating previous research findings with empirical data. RESULTS: A mechanism-based classification system for STR tri-allelic genotypes was established, comprising Type I (2 subtypes), Type II (6 subtypes), and the trisomic type (2 subtypes). On this basis, a standardized PI calculation method covering all categories of STR tri-allelic genotypes was developed. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides methodological guidance for the scientific and standardized calculation of PI for STR tri-allelic genotypes and offers an important reference for the formulation and refinement of relevant industry standards.

On the visual recognition of moving letter.

The visual recognition (i.e., legibility) of moving object was studied. The numerical letters were mainly used as the objects. The influences of (1) direction of the movement, (2) thickness of line of letter (i.e., stroke width), and (3) design of letter to the visual recognition were measured. From these measurements, the optimal numerical letters were proposed in the first step of the study, which were called as IMAL(initial most optimal arabic letters). The visual recognition of both moving letters IMAL and letters JIS (Japan industrial standard) employed for motionless-state was compared for both the moving and the motionless states. In the presentation for motionless state, letters JIS showed lower error rate, but the statistical significance was not proved, while in the presentation for horizontally moving state letters IMAL showed better visual recognition than letters JIS was the significant level of 5%. Therefore, the useful numerical letters for moving state could be designed in the study. Moreover, the visual recognition of letters IMAL was evaluated for various moving velocities. The optimal moving velocities for both letters IMAL and JIS were found.

[Studies on the strength and the cutting performance of dental canal reamer. (II). Torsional strength and tip diameter of dental canal reamers (author's transl)].

Strength of pulp canal reamers are important problems for cutting treatments of the root of tooth at the dental regions. Reamers have been used as cutting tools by the twisting movements, and then, fracture of reamers are especially caused by the shearing stress at the bite tips. So, this paper treated the shear strength of dental canal reamers, which are torsional strength and twisting rigidity of these cutting instruments. And we made the torsional apparatus for cutting and twisting tests, and tested the torsional strength of raw materials and pulp canal reamers. Type of reamer's configuration are treated by Japanese industrial standard (JIS) and these properties are readjusted with dimensions of diameter of reamers. Shear strength of reamers are 120 approximately 140 kg/mm2 and strength of straight bar with taper are about two times of that of reamers which are about 40 kg/mm2 (except reamer's number 1, 2). Scattering of value of strength and torsional angle of these reamers are examined and showed the range of scattering of these properties. Effectiveness of torsional angle on the fracture properties are considered on the clinical treatments and treated the safety of fracture of these reamers.

[Studies on the strength and the cutting performance of dental canal reamer. (III) Cutting performance and torsional fracture (author's transl)].

Characteristics of cutting torque and fracture strength of pulp canal reamers are important problems as for the severity used at many of dental cutting tools. And it is the most difficult problems that reamers are cutting tools to be used for magnification of root canals. So, this paper makes a report on the measurements of reamer's section and dimension of the under hole, which are required for cutting test, and on the safety of characteristics of dental canal reamers. Diameter of under hole are determined by the relationship of reamer's section. And these results of measurements are compared with the Japanese Industrial Standard values and we discussed the probabilities of the clearance of these dimensions. Cutting torque of reamers are measured with twisting test machine of our making. Concerning the safety of fractures, we apply the theoretical analysis for the fracture to torque of bite tips and estimated the fracture torque of cutting section of reamers. And probablity of twisting fracture of reamers are existed about from one half to one-fifth values for the dental reamers of practical used.

Physiological assessment of the passive children's hood.

The physiological effect of the "passive children's hood" (PCH) was studied in 24 children: 8 toddlers (3-4.5 years old), 8 pre-school pupils (4.5-6 years) and 8 first- and second-grade pupils (6-8 years). This device consists of a children's gas mask and a transparent PVC (polyvinyl chloride plastic) covering (hood). Inspiratory CO2 and O2 (FiCO2 and FiO2, respectively), temperature and humidity were monitored at 10-min intervals while the children were occupied with sedentary activities (playing and watching TV) in a sealed room. Ambient temperature and relative humidity were approximately 27 degrees C and 75% respectively. In the PCH space the temperature was 2 degrees C higher and humidity was near saturation at the end of exposure. FiCO2 in 12 children exceeded 2%, which is the upper acceptable limit according to industrial standards. In four of them FiCO2 was greater than 4% and FiO2 less than 16%. Twenty-two children tolerated the PCH for 92 +/- 35 min (range 24-133 min) with no physiological complications. A significant correlation was found between childrens' age and tolerance time (r = 0.47, P less than 0.025). We conclude that children whose masks are not well adjusted may be exposed to rebreathing CO2-enriched air.

[Comparative material studies on dental stones in accordance with DIN 13911].

It was the object of this investigation to compare nine high-strength stone plasters in terms of visual appearance, pouring time, setting time, setting expansion, compressive strength and detail reproduction in accordance with DIN 13911 and ISO 6873 using both standard consistency as indicated in the industrial standard and the water-to-powder ratio as indicated by the manufacturer. None of the tested stones met the visual requirements in all points. Regarding their physical properties, six tested stones were up to standard. Three stones failed to meet the DIN and ISO requirements. Following the manufacturer's mixing instructions resulted in a significant improvement in material properties as against standard consistency. Disregarding some minor improvements required, DIN 13911 and ISO 6873 are useful standards for a standardized comparison of dental plasters.

[Light-induced damage to the eye].

The following review outlines the mechanisms of phototoxicity that are known so far, how they develop, which risk factors are involved, and what the consequences are for ophthalmology. It is necessary to differentiate between photochemical and thermal damage as they differ with regard to etiology and course. Photochemical damage in the lens originates from the absorption of UV-A light; damage caused by oxidation can cause nuclear cataract. Photochemical damage of the retina occurs typically after a longer interval and is mainly due to short-wavelength visible light ("blue light damage"); it entails destruction of membranes of the photoreceptor outer segments and finally photoreceptor death. There are indications that age-related macular degeneration can be accelerated by photochemical light damage. Lipofuscin, photo-sensitizing drugs and prolonged exposure, as well as aphakia and pseudophakia, can increase the risk. Thermal injury is caused mainly by absorption of longer-wavelength light by the retinal pigment epithelium; the effects are usually immediate. The amount of light that can cause threshold damage by common light sources and ophthalmological instruments is given in relation to wavelength, area, and the period of exposure. This information provides the criteria for optimal light-protection glasses. Phototoxic damage can be avoided by awareness, measurement and corresponding action, including the development of better industrial standards for sunglasses and light-emitting devices.

[Biological and physical studies on a new alloy for the demonstration of a new gamma 2-free amalgam].

Physical and biological characteristics as well as the clinical behavior of a new powdered alloy mixture (ISO 1559--1978) for the demonstration of a gamma 2-free amalgam were studied. The physical values surpassed the requirements of the Preliminary German Industrial Standards No. 13904. Compared with other gamma 2-free types of amalgam, the structure of the amalgam composed of the alloy under study contained no additional copper-containing phases which would negatively influence electrochemical events within the amalgam structure, except for the eta'-phase. Implantation tests with rabbits showed that the amalgam composed of the material under study reacted like material tested in earlier investigations which is already available.
