A new approach to health education inservice training.

Inservice training to promote health education is important and, for it to be truly effective, teachers must be intimately involved from the beginning. This article describes the operation of the Portal School Program at Arizona State University which is one method for promoting health education in elementary schools. The program is easy to implement and has been shown to be effective. The program uses a three-phase approach of development, dissemination, and review. It provides for the development of teacher designed health education materials, promotes the use of these materials in the classroom, and provides a mechanism for their review and refinement.

The systems approach: an innovative model for improving the delivery of inservice training.

A systems approach consisting of eight elements was used in the design, implementation, and evaluation of a module for physical therapy inservice training at McDonald Army Hospital, Fort Eustis, Virginia. Use of this approach was aimed at increasing the effectiveness of learning, improving participant attitudes toward inservice training, and developing a model which could be used for delivering inservice training throughout the helping professions. The design requires that the problem area be selected by staff consensus--in this case planning and administration of therapeutic exercise programs for patients with hip dysfunctions. Five sessions which centered around this patient oriented problem area were presented by the physical therapist to the three physical therapy technicians. Principles of instructional design and events of instruction were incorporated using the format of Gagne and Briggs (1979). The technicians' perception of physical therapy inservice training was rated before the implementation of the systems approach, after the second inservice session, and after the final inservice session. By the end of the five inservice sessions, all three technicians were able to accomplish the predetermined goal of planning and administering a safe therapeutic exercise program to patients with hip dysfunctions. Progress notes also indicated that patient programs were being appropriately upgraded based on the patient's condition. Technicians' ratings of inservice training also had increased after the final session. Further implementation and evaluation of this approach to training is recommended.

Effect of inservice training on implementation of a health curriculum in Nova Scotia, Canada.

The effect of different types of inservice training on the degree of implementation of a fourth grade health curriculum in Nova Scotia, Canada, was investigated. Using a quasiexperimental, nonequivalent control group design with posttest only, teachers (N = 41) were assigned to one trial group and two comparison groups. The distal comparison group received no inservice training, the local comparison group received a single session, and the trial group received ongoing, inservice training. The Health Program Component Checklist developed for this study was used to measure implementation. Data were collected by personal interview. Based on the Mann-Whitney U test, a significantly greater degree of implementation occurred in the trial group than in the proximal comparison group, but not the distal comparison group.

Inservice training for part-time dental faculty.

Part-time faculty outnumber full-time faculty in clinical dentistry departments. They spend many hours in contact with students and often serve as role models of dental practitioners. Yet, part-time faculty have had very little formal training in instructional techniques. This article describes an inservice training program for part-time faculty involving workshops, weekly meetings, and practice sessions. The program was developed to provide training in some basic teaching techniques. Part-time faculty were given an instructional manual and copies of student syllabi and the opportunity to participate in the development and use of the student criteria sheets. The results of the program indicate that the faculty felt the program was an effective use of their time and they will accept, and even look forward to, future inservice training opportunities.

Evaluation of an inservice training program on dementia and wandering.

This study assessed the impact of an inservice training program in four nursing homes on nursing staff's knowledge of dementia, pacing/wandering behavior and management strategies, staff satisfaction, and their perceptions of work difficulty and quality of care. Additionally, unit-level behavioral observations of agitated behavior and the nature of resident interactions with staff members and other residents were also performed to assess whether changes in nursing staff's knowledge impacted the residents or interactions with the residents. Analyses revealed that quiz scores were significantly improved immediately following the inservice program as compared to pretest but returned to near pretest levels at the 1-month follow-up. Additionally, nursing staff reported that residents were allowed to pace/wander to a greater extent at follow-up compared to pretest. Methods for improving the effectiveness of inservice training are discussed.

Establishment of an inservice training program for rural health workers in a decentralized system.

The maintenance of the effective functioning of peripheral health workers in isolated working environments has long been a subject of contemplation by health planners and managers. It depends on training, motivation and skill. This paper describes the development of an inservice training program for rural health workers based on the establishment of a core group of trainers in each province. Training of trainers utilized a combination of formal training, workshops, distance-learning techniques and regular on-site consultation.

Developing empathy in nurses: an inservice training program.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether inservice communication training enhanced the empathic skills of 263 nurses employed at Hacettepe University Hospital. Data were collected using a nurse information form, participants' satisfaction form, and the Empathic Communication Skill B (ECS-B) form developed by Dökmen [Dökmen, U. (1988). A new measurement model of the empathy and developing empathy by using psychodrama. Journal of Education Faculty of Ankara University, 21, 155-190]. The ECS-B was used as both a preintervention and a postintervention measure. The data were expressed as means, percentages, and standard deviations, and were analyzed using Pearson's chi-square test and repeated-measures analysis of variance. The posttest scores of nurses increased from 155.6 to 180.5, and training played a role in enhancing nurses' empathic skills with regard to all variables (P < .05). However, a more comprehensive and continuous training should be planned, and its impact on behavior and patient outcomes should be investigated.
