A behavior based safety approach at a Kuwait research institution.

INTRODUCTION: Behavior based safety (BBS) initiatives are the current trend toward improving safety performance. METHOD: This study outlines the framework of the BBS process and summarizes several behavioral safety approaches to accident prevention. RESULTS: Although most of the published research has focused on the improvement of safe behavior in industry, this study is the first to apply the current approach of behavior based safety in a research/educational setting. An experiment conducted at a research institution demonstrated the effectiveness of a well-designed behavior based safety process. A follow-up study indicated that the BBS produced a lasting effect for the experimental group. IMPACT ON INDUSTRY: Results from this study can be the driving force to implement behavior-based safety processes into educational, research, and training organizations.

Teaching severely self-abusive and aggressive autistic residents to exit to fire alarms.

Fifty-two case-hardened, severely self-abusive and aggressive autistic and retarded students, living in six different community residences, were trained to exit their residences, without the presence or assistance of staff, when a fire alarm sounded at night. On a pretest, prior to an 11-week period of intensive environmental and behavioral interventions, only 25% of the students exited within 2 1/2 minutes and independent of staff assistance. At posttest, 100% exited successfully, in a mean evacuation time of 60 seconds. The study was conducted at the Behavior Research Institute (BRI).

National Institute on Drug Abuse's behavioral research agenda.

Basic behavioral research continues to play an integral role in the National Institute on Drug Abuse's (NIDA's) search for solutions to the complex social and public health problems posed by drug abuse and addiction. Along with NIDA's basic molecular and neuroscience research programs, behavioral research has played an important role in increasing clinician's understanding of the mechanisms and processes that underlie addiction. Much has been learned about the ways in which animals and humans respond to their environment and the role these basic behavioral processes play in drug abuse and other drug-abuse-related phenomena, such as withdrawal, craving, and relapse, but there is still much more to be known. The author discusses how NIDA will continue to build and promote its behavioral research agenda and ensure that behavioral research findings are applied in real-life settings when applicable.

Integrating behavioral and social sciences research at the National Institutes of Health, U.S.A.

Readers of Social Science & Medicine may find it interesting to know that in 1993 the United States Congress established the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the belief that scientific research on behavioral and social factors in order to facilitate a growth in this important area of research. As is discussed in this paper, the philosophy of the OBSSR is that, although discoveries in the behavioral and social sciences are as critical for health as those from the biomedical sciences, knowledge from both areas must ultimately be integrated. Such integration will accelerate our understanding and treatment of physical and mental illnesses in both the developed and the developing world. This paper briefly presents the scientific evidence supporting this philosophy, outlines the mandated responsibilities of the OBSSR, and discusses some of its current and planned activities.

A last call for self-regulation of biomedical research.

The indecisive response of the academic community to well-publicized cases of research fraud or serious misconduct has been characterized as a failure of self-regulation. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on the Responsible Conduct of Research suggests measures for improving the research environment, by a combination of more explicit definition of standards of acceptable research practices, appointment of individuals to promote research standards and to respond to charges or complaints, improvement of supervision of research trainee, teaching of research ethics as well as technical skills, and reduction of the pressure to publish. The National Institutes of Health was asked to ensure that research institutions take such actions by requiring assurances as a condition of research funding. This essay discusses the recommendations and implications of the IOM report.
