[Pneumococcal serotyping. Multicentric inventory in hospital. Years 1977-1978 (author's transl)].

For a period of 17 months, 670 pneumococci, mostly isolated in the Paris area, have been typed with contercurrent-immunoelectrophoresis ; 338 of them come from cases of pneumonia, bacteremia, meningitis and acute otitis media. An important regrouping of the most frequent serotypes among the 83 known serotypes makes possible a vaccinal prophylaxis. The tetradecavalent vaccine which is now for sale in USA gives, in the four main pathologies of this enquiry, a coverage superior to 80 percent. Choosing the 14 most frequent serotypes of the four main pathologies of their data the authors propose the following vaccinal formula : 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 18, 19, 23.

Hospital pharmacy purchases and inventories.

The results of the hospital pharmacy purchases and inventories portion of a 1978 national mail survey of pharmaceutical services in short-term hospitals are reported. A sample of 815 hospitals was selected randomly from among 5,200 U.S. short-term hospitals that employ a pharmacist on at least a part-time basis. The inventory question had a response rate of 67.7%, the purchasing question, 62.2%; inventory turnover was calculated based on a response rate of 60.5% to both questions. Inventories were inordinately large in small hospitals. Inventory turnover rates, which increased with hospital size, were somewhat less than optimal in small and medium hospitals. The Pacific region's inventory/bed and purchases/bed values were substantially greater than those of any other region. Large hospitals had a 20% higher annual purchases/bed figure than the smaller hospitals, perhaps because of their relatively greater volume of outpatient services. Based on their respective demand (as measured by adjusted inpatient days), the drug purchases of the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions were less than expected, while the Mountain and Pacific regions' drug purchases were much greater than expected. Total 1979 purchases of pharmaceuticals and related supplies by pharmacies in all short-term hospitals are estimated to reach $2,215 to $2,772 million.

Hospitalwide inventory turnover gives hospitals positive results.

This article describes the problems involved in reaching a rational inventory investment and describes a hospitalwide inventory turnover program that can be used as an aid in reaching this decision. The article illustrates a hospitalwide inventory program at one hospital. The systematic program entails the collection of data, review of the data to develop a program for reducing inventories, and monitoring of the results.

Target inventory levels for a hospital blood bank or a decentralized regional blood banking system.

For any blood type, there is a complex interaction among the optimal inventory level, daily demand level, the transfusion to crossmatch ratio, the crossmatch release period and the age of arriving units that determine the shortage and outdate rate. The blood bank administrator should establish optimal target inventory levels based on a simple equation (decision rule) relating these factors. Evaluation of this rule indicates that its implementation can lead to a very low shortage rate and a reasonable low outdate rate if the blood bank administrator makes efforts to control the crossmatch release period and the average transfusion to crossmatch ratio.

Weekly rotation of blood inventory--a system for supplying small hospitals.

A system of weekly turnover of blood inventory has been shown capable of reducing outdating in small hospitals. One problem is ensuring the return of unused blood at the end of the first week. Outdating becomes intolerable if the blood is returned to the blood center after two weeks.
