Assessment of the nasopharyngeal area by cephalometry in cases of cleft lip and palate.

The nasopharyngeal area in 149 patients with cleft lip and palate and 157 normal individuals was evaluated by cephalometric radiography. The patients were male and female Caucasians, ranging in age from 12 to 16 years. Linear cephalometric parameters: (Ptm'-Sl; Ptm'-IPPF; IPPF-I, I-Ptm'), ANS angle and nasopharyngeal area were utilized. From comparative analysis of nasopharyngeal area in the cleft and the control groups, the following conclusions were made: 1) The nasopharyngeal area was smaller in the cleft group. 2) There was no correlation between ANS angle and nasopharyngeal area in either group.

Serious intestinal complication five years after insertion of a Nova-T.

This report presents a case of sigmoid perforation five years after insertion of a Nova-T. This case illustrates that serious complications of third generation IUDs may occur even after several years of intraabdominal location. An IUD, which has perforated the uterus, cannot be left in the peritoneal cavity. Therefore, removal of a perforated IUD is still a medical indication as recommended by the World Health Organization and IPPF International Medical Advisory Panel Meetings.

International Conference on Better Health for Women and Children through Family Planning: recommendations for action.

The importance of upgrading and revitalizing family planning programs so that health and human needs can be better met was addressed by 225 governmental and nongovernmental leaders from 60 countries at the International Conference on Better Health for Women and Children through Family Planning, in Nairobi, Kenya, 5-9 October 1987. Family planning as a health measure, to prevent unwanted and high-risk pregnancies and the resulting deaths of hundreds of thousands of mothers and children in the developing world, was the focus of the conference. It was sponsored by the major international organizations concerned with family health and population issues: International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), the Population Council, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Bank. The Recommendations for Action arising from the conference and reprinted below are endorsed by all seven of these sponsoring organizations and agencies.

Contraceptive use and fertility in Paraguay, 1987.

In 1987, 38 percent of married Paraguayan women aged 15-44 were practicing contraception, with oral contraceptives being the most prevalent method. Fertility rates for the population were at corresponding levels, with an overall fertility rate of 5.4 births per woman. Fertility has not changed substantially for the nation as a whole since 1979, and contraceptive use has increased by only 6 percentage points. Findings from the present study are consistent with the lack of a public sector family planning program in the country. Pharmacies are the principal source of contraceptives in the country. Twenty-two percent of all women and one-third of married women are at risk of having an unplanned pregnancy. The greatest impact on contraceptive use can be made if new and continued program efforts focus n the interior of the Oriental region of the country.
