Human enzyme polymorphism in the Canary Islands. V. Western Islands.

Autochthonous human samples of the three westernmost islands of the Canarian Archipelago, La Palma, Gomera, and Hierro, have been analyzed for eight red cell polymorphic enzymes. Only a small intra and inter-insular differentiation exists among these three islands. However, a marked heterogeneity is found when all seven islands of the Archipelago are compared by Nei's genetic distances [1972]. Nevertheless, there is no correlation between genetic and geographic distances. Historical factors could explain the frequency similarities of some distant islands. The rare variant GD*A+Negroid allele, and the endemic GD*Gc allele, previously found in other islands, have also been detected in this survey.

An archipelago of CpG islands in Xq28: identification and fine mapping of 20 new CpG islands of the human X chromosome.

19 probes for CpG islands, mapping to Xq28, have been used as probes to construct a physical map of genes of this band of the human X chromosome. A total of 22 CpG islands have been precisely mapped in respect to known loci along the 9-10 Mb of Xq28. The fine mapping of such a large number of CpG islands has demonstrated that also in gene rich Giemsa light bands, like Xq28, gene distribution is non uniform: the CpG islands are clustered in the distal portion of the band in a 2 Mb region between the G6PD gene and the DXS15 locus. Moreover, 16 CpG islands were found between the G6PD and the RCP/GCP genes, a region of DNA of only about 300 kb. If this structural organization has a biological function it has yet to be determined. However, the isolation of large genomic regions enriched in gene sequences and the availability of cosmid or YAC contigs will provide the means to test the significance of such gene organization, as well as the material for large sequencing projects and gene search, for the identification of candidate genes for inherited disorders mapped to Xq28 and for comparative mapping.

CpG islands and HTF islands in the HLA class I region: investigation of the methylation status of class I genes leads to precise physical mapping of the HLA-B and -C genes.

We have investigated the accessibility of the 5' CpG rich sequences (CpG islands) present in the 5' region of most if not all HLA class I genes to methylation sensitive rare cutter enzymes. We show that for HLA-A, -B, -C genes and a few other (but not all) class I sequences these CpG islands are unmethylated and therefore constitute HTF islands (CpG rich, unmethylated regions of DNA, usually associated with expressed genes). We then map precisely the HTF islands of the HLA-B and HLA-C genes and determine that they are separated by 130 Kb (in agreement with genetic data) and that these two genes are in the same transcriptional orientation on the chromosome.

Human enzyme polymorphism in the Canary Islands. IV. Eastern islands.

The genetic polymorphism of eight red cell enzymes was analyzed in four population samples from the two easternmost islands of the Canary Archipelago. No heterogeneity was detected within the islands, but differences between them were of the same magnitude as those found between the islands and the Spanish mainland. The presence of the African G6PD-A+ and the rare G6PD-Gc alleles seems to be a characteristic of all Canarian populations studied.

Trace elements intake in the Faroe Islands. III. Element concentrations in human organs in populations from Bergen (Norway) and the Faroe Islands.

Flameless as well as flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry were used for the analysis of six elements (calcium, iron, zinc, selenium, cadmium and mercury) in human organs (liver, kidney cortex and medulla, heart, pancreas and spleen) from 13 bodies from Bergen and 10 from the Faroe Islands. Samples were taken at autopsy and the organs selected were without pathological signs. All patients were born between 1899 and 1923. Element concentrations in the organs studied were comparable to previous studies, except for high mercury and selenium values in the liver, the kidney cortex and medulla of subjects from the Faroe Islands. The high mercury and selenium values may be explained by the high consumption of pilot whales by the Faroe Islands population.

A serologic survey of the island fox (Urocyon littoralis) on the Channel Islands, California.

The island fox is listed as a threatened species in California. A serologic survey of 194 island foxes (Urocyon littoralis) was conducted over the entire range of the species on the Channel Islands (California, USA). Antibody prevalence against canine adenovirus and canine parvovirus reached 97% and 59%, respectively, in some populations sampled. Antibody prevalence of canine herpesvirus, canine coronavirus, leptospirosis and toxoplasmosis were low. Antibodies against canine distemper virus were not detected.

On the drinking water situation on the Cape Verde Islands (Island of Santiago).

On the Cape Verde Islands drinking water investigations were made. The drinking water was tested in chemical and bacteriological respects as well as on amebas and rotaviruses. The isolated germs were investigated on their reaction against several antibiotics and chemotherapeutics by means of the agar diffusion test. The changing of drinking water quality from water-supply-places to the households was investigated as well. According to the fact, that only 10.6% of 207 public water supplies investigated show drinking water quality after ONORM, and that nearly 30% and 80.2% of them contained E. coli and coliforme germs respectively, the urgency of extensive sanitations of water supplies on the Cape Verde Islands is evident.

Distribution of Ixodes dammini (Acari: Ixodidae) in residential lawns on Prudence Island, Rhode Island.

The distribution of nymphal Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman & Corwin in residential lawns was assessed by flagging on Prudence Island, RI. The number of ticks per sample was five times greater in lawns adjacent to woods than in lawns adjacent to other lawns. Relative tick abundance was negatively correlated with distance from the woods, but the decline was gradual. Spirochete prevalence in ticks did not differ among lawn types or at different distances from the woods. Therefore, barriers that keep people away from the wood edge probably lower the risk of acquiring Lyme disease, but there is still a risk. Even with physical barriers at lawn-wood edges, personal precautions to prevent tick bites should be followed.

Description of six new species of the genus Leptotrombidium from Mindanao Island and notes on the medically important genera of chiggers (Acari: Trombiculidae) of the Philippine Islands.

In the Philippine Islands, the genus Leptotrombidium currently consists of members of the subgenera Leptotrombidium and Trombiculindus. The following species are described as new: L. (L.) macacaphilus, L. (L.) longimedian, L. (L.) mindanensis, L. (L.) urogale, L. (L.) oculascutum, L. (T.) roseannleilaniae. The distribution of, and comments on, the known vectors of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, L. (L.) deliense and L. (L.) fletcheri and the previously reported L. (L.) sandfordi, are given. Information on species of the potential scrub itch genera Blankaartia, Eutrombicula, and Schoengastia and a key to the genera and species of medically important trombiculids is provided.
