Various components of the aquatic ecosystem of Tuttle Creek Reservoir on the Big Blue River in northeastern Kansas were examined for organochlorine insecticide residues in 1970-71. Components examined were water, sediments, periphyton, zooplankton, insects, and whole-body samples of 10 common fish species. Only dieldrin and sigmaDDT residues were detected. Dieldrin was found in part of the nonfish samples at levels ranging up to 0.01 ppm and in 97 percent of the fish samples with a high level of 0.17 ppm. SigmaDDT residues were also detected in part of the nonfish samples at levels ranging up to 0.42 ppm, and in 98 percent of the fish samples at levels as high as 0.57 ppm. Authors' findings are roughly similar to those of other surveys of Kansas fishes. All levels are relatively low compared with those reported in surveys from other parts of the Nation.
The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of 15NO- and 14NO-ligated Hb Kansas have been measured at 77 K in the range of pH 5 TO 10. At low pH the ESR spectrum is the composite of a type I and a type II spectrum which changes to another composite of type I and type II spectrum at high pH. For the definition of type I and type II spectra and the correlation of these types with two tertiary conformation states see Overkamp et al., Z. Naturforsch. 31 c, 524 [1976]. Both, the type I and the type II spectra observed at low and high pH respectively are different with regard to g-tensors and hyperfine-splitting constants. Therefore at intermediate pH values the ESR spectra of NO-Hb Kansas are the composites of four spectral components. The assignments of the four spectral components to the alpha and the beta chains are arrived at from the comparison of the ESR spectra of the alpha2Mmet beta2NO and of the alpha2MNObeta2NO species of Hb M Iwate. alpha and beta chains are both characterized by a pH-dependent spectral transition from a type I to a type II spectrum. The chains are non-equivalent with regard to both the type I and the type II spectra. The type I spectra assigned to the alpha and the beta chains are characterized by G*ZZ=2.0095 with a hyperfine splitting of alpha*ZZ(15NO)=2.36 mT and gZZ-2.0085 with a hyperfine splitting of aZZ(15NO)=2.41 mT respectively. The type II spectra assigned to the alpha and the beta chains are characterized by g*'ZZ-2.005 and a hyperfine splitting of alpha*'ZZ(15NO)-3.07 mT and g'ZZ-2.005 and a hyperfine splitting of alpha'ZZ(15NO)=3.31 mT. The change of the hyperfine splitting at gZZ during the transition from type I to type II corresponds to an increase of the spin density at the NO by about 25% in both types of chains. Comparison of type I spectra of the NO-ligated alpha and beta chains respectively demonstrates that the spin density at the NO is larger in the beta chains that in the alpha chains. The spectral types are correlated with functional states defined by the kinetics of N0-binding. Binding of inosital hexaphosphate has no influence on the ESR spectra in the whole range of pH as it is expected if NO-Hb Kandas is in the quaternary T structure.
EPR spectra of Hb15NO crystals of mutant Kansas (Asn G4(102) beta leads to Thr) have been recorded at every 5' intervals and in three orthogonal planes. The nitrosylhemes are nonequivalent for the alpha and beta subunits, their assignments are made possible by comparison with the powder EPR specrtra of Hb15NO of mutant Iwate (His F8(87)alpha leads to Tyr) (Trittelvitz, E., Gersonde, K., and Winterhalter, K.H. (1975) Eur. J. Biochem. 51, 33-42). The EPR parameters for the beta-nitrosylhemes of Hb Kansas are: gxx=2.094 gyy=2.031, gzz=2.00, Azetazeta=11 G, Azetazeta=32.5 G, Aetaeta=12.5 G; the Fe-N-O bond angle is about 105 degrees. The paramters for the alpha-nitrosyl hemes are: gxx=2.058, gyy=2.021, gzz=1.977, Azetazeta=24.5 G, Azetazeta less than or equal to 5G, Aetaeta=23 G; the Fe-N-O bond angle is about 167 degrees. Hyperfine splittings of 7 to 8 gauss with 14Nepsilon atom of His(F8) were observed for the beta-nitrosylhemes; none was resolved for the alpha-nitrosylhemes. The results were interpreted to mean that the tension on the iron of the beta subunits is not large in the unliganded state and this tension was not greatly increased by the binding of nitric oxide in the strongly bent configuration. The tension at the iron in the deoxyhemoglobin is dominant at the alpha subunits. Binding of nitric oxide in this case causing either the breaking or great weakening of the Fe-His(F8) bond. The nitrosyl is in a nearly linear configuration. The unpaired electron densities at the nitrogen atom of the bound nitric oxide is about 63% for the beta-nitrosylheme and 37% for the alpha-nitrosylhemes.
The occurrence and distribution of the myxosporida Myxosoma funduli on the gills of the plains killifish (Fundulus kansae) were investigated; Fundulus kansae is reported as a new host. Host samples from various sites on the South Platte River, Nebraska, were collected during the summer months of 1975 and 1976. The protozoan parasite population was shown to be overdispersed within the host population, and this distribution was similar to that described by the negative binomial equation. Demographic characteristics of the infected fish subpopulation were virtually identical to those of the whole fish population. Infection intensity was independent of gill bar number or side. The frequency of bilateral infections was 0.54, of left only infections was 0.23, and of right only infections was 0.22. Distribution of immature and mature plasmodia indicated that a pre-existing infection did not preclude a new infection, and suggested a prepatent period of less than two months.
Toxoplasma oocysts in cat feces were marked with a tracer amount of strontium-85 (85-SR), and were superficially buried simulating the natural disposal of feces by cats. Oocyst infectivity in Costa Rica was followed qualitatively and persisted for 1 year in three shaded sites, two moist, and one relatively dry site. Oocyst infectivity was quantitated in the Kansas deposit over a period of 18 months, including two winters. After initial mixing in soil, the level of infectivity remained fairly stable. Infectivity was recovered, probably from the surface on one Musca, several isopods, and earthworms. These data on persistence of Toxoplasma oocysts in soil support the concept that Toxoplasma infectivity in nature may be increased logarithmically by cats.
The data presented are compiled from two herds of American bison (Bison bison) in Kansas. In this study there were differences in the mean values of white blood cell count, neutrophil percentage, lymphocyte percentage and cholestrol, alkaline phosphatase, specific glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase concentrations between the age groups of animals under 2 years of age and bison over 2 year old. Differences in the two age groups paralleled those found in Jersey and Hereford cattle. Packed cell volume and hemoglobin concentrations was considerably higher than found in domestic Bovidae. More data is needed from other bison herds in this country to better describe the range of normal variation in individuals, population and age groups of B. bison.
During 1975 to 1977, serum samples were collected from 101 adult coyotes (Canis latrans) captured in northcentral Kansas. Ten samples were seropositive by microagglutination testing and six of those samples were seropositive for multiple serovars. Titers for Leptospira interrogans serovars grippotyphosa, pyrogenes, djasiman, butembo, and pomona were demonstrated.
AIMS: Finerenone was shown to improve overall health status, as measured by the aggregate 23-item Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) score, in heart failure with mildly reduced or preserved ejection fraction (HFmrEF/HFpEF). This study aimed to contextualize KCCQ changes in a manner that is relevant to patients and clinicians, thereby improving understanding of this metric in HFmrEF/HFpEF. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this prespecified analysis of FINEARTS-HF, a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of finerenone in HFmrEF/HFpEF, we performed exploratory assessments of treatment effects on mean score changes from baseline to 12 months for each of the 23 KCCQ components (scaled from 0 [worst] to 100 [best]) using multivariable linear regression. We further compared the impact of finerenone on the KCCQ-overall summary score (KCCQ-OSS) at 12 months with the expected decline per year. Of 6001 participants in FINEARTS-HF, 5006 completed the KCCQ both at baseline and 12 months (age: 72 ± 10 years, women: 45%, baseline KCCQ-OSS: 63.9 ± 22.0). Finerenone, compared with placebo, numerically improved all but one KCCQ component, with the greatest nominal improvement observed in lower limb oedema frequency (+2.5, 95% CI: 0.9-4.1), fatigue burden (+2.2, 95% CI: 0.9-3.5), fatigue frequency (+2.1, 95% CI: 0.7-3.6), and lower limb oedema burden (+1.8, 95% CI: 0.6-2.9). KCCQ-OSS at 12 months was inversely related to age, with finerenone shifting the age-KCCQ-OSS relationship by 4.7 (95% CI: 0.4-9.1) years. CONCLUSIONS: In FINEARTS-HF, finerenone was associated with modest improvements in health status-most notably lower limb oedema and fatigue-in patients with HFmrEF/HFpEF.

The authors made a survey of all admissions to Topeka (Kans.) State Hospital from a three-county catchment area over an 11-year period during which a private psychiatric clinic in the area assumed the functions of a comprehensive community mental health center. The center's activities brought a significant decrease in the number of direct admissions to the hospital from the catchment area. However, the center consistently referred more patients with psychotic disorders to the state hospital than would be expected on the basis of over-all state hospital admissions. Similarly, a high proportion of patients with organic brain syndromes were admitted directly to the hospital from the three-county area. The authors say the findings suggest that the public mental hospital still has an important role to play on the delivery of mental health services.
