UNLABELLED: The effects of psychodramatherapy versus patient club activity group is compared in a controlled study with psychiatric patients in a period of two month (8 times a three hour session per week). SAMPLE: 22 patients (11 patients psychodramatherapy (PD); 11 patients patient club activity (PCA)). Diagnoses: neuroses, subacute psychoses. Patients were matched according to age, sex and syndrome (resp. diagnoses). Applied tests: semistandardized interview with formulation of personal therapeutic goals, personality tests (Giessen, MMPI), mood scales (EWL, Bf-S v. Zerssen, 100 mml line), psychopathology (AMP 3/interview), social adjustment (SAF). Testing periods: before beginning with PD and PCA, attendant to therapy, after therapy, follow up (three month after end oftherapy). RESULTS: it was advantageous to have both psychotic and neurotic patients in the same therapy group. In the course of psychodramatherapy and patient club activity there was an improvement with a regressive trend to baseline after end of therapy. PD in comparison to PCA appeared to be more effective in the improvement of some psychiatric relevant personality dimensions, in the improvement of psychopathology, in reaching the personal therapeutic goals and in a positive opinion of therapy. A psychodramatherapy lasting two month seems revealed to be more attractive and to have more therapeutic efficacy than a patient club activity group. Because of the instability of some effects a more prolonged therapy period is suggested.
The authors report the development of a short-term behavioral therapy program for chronically hospitalized schizophrenic patients who had responded only minimally in a therapeutic community. The basic program was a token economy, which concentrated on personal care activities, productive activities, and leisure activities, combined with drug treatment. During the first 9 months of the program 105 patients were admitted and 79 were discharged--24 to nursing or group homes and 47 to their own home or family. At 1-year follow-up 62 patients were still in the community without any readmissions. The findings that a token economy can be effective with chronic patients at comparatively little additional expense has broad implications for custodial care facilities with limited resources.
8th degree students were asked by questionnaire on their leisure-time activities. Home work was shown to interfere with time spent in front of the television screen, whereas sports did not. Girls spent more time at homework than boys, and less time at television. Also they were less active in sports, especially in the lower grade schools.

54 adult patients suffering from hemophilia responded to a questionnaire regarding their state of illness and social situation. As far as state of the illness was concerned items pertained to type of hemophilia, factor activity, degree of physical handicap, number of bleedings and hospitalizations as well as etiology of bleedings. Social data contained items on marital status, education, occupation and leisure activities. The handicap of the illness as well as the possibility of positive social integration is underlined by the findings of the study.
This study aimed to investigate the determinants of a favorable attitude towards retirement among 175 male executives aged 63 or 64 and still professionally active. Findings were based on a questionnaire for attitude as well as a variety of other examinations designed to reveal the determinants involved. Multiple regression analysis indicated that four possible determinants are significantly related to a favorable attitude toward retirement: a good cardiovascular status, a poor state of vision, a high degree of life satisfaction and an important amount of time devoted to leisure activities. The relationship between commitment to work and attitude towards retirement was not found to be significant.
The study set out to investigate readjustment to disability on the part of spouses of patients disabled by a cerebrovascular accident and to elicit the particular problems faced by the spouse of an aphasic patient. In a sample of 79 subjects, spouses of aphasic patients showed evidence of significantly poorer overall social adjustment then spouses of non-asphasic patients. The areas that were particularly impaired were social and leisure activities and marital relationships. In the marital area aphasia appeared to be particularly disruptive and the marriages were characterised by problems of interpersonal communication, diminished sexual satisfaction and loss of partnership. There was a raised incidence of minor psychiatric disorder in all spouses and again this was more pronounced amongst the spouses of aphasic patients.
AIMS: We aimed to (i) investigate associations between leisure time physical activity level cumulated over 20 years and multiple plasma proteins and (ii) explore if proteins significantly associated with physical activity are also associated with risk of imminent myocardial infarction (MI), long-term MI, and mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS: In the cohort Uppsala Longitudinal Study of Adult Men, leisure time physical activity was self-reported at Ages 50, 60, and 70. At Age 70, 720 plasma proteins were analysed in 782 participants with up to 19.3 years of follow-up for MI and 26.3 years follow-up for mortality. In the nested case-cohort study Markers of Imminent Myocardial Infarction, plasma proteins were measured in disease-free individuals from six European cohorts. Cases (n = 420) were those with acute MI within 6 months of a blood draw, with up to four cohort representatives per case (n = 1598). A higher level of leisure time physical activity level was inversely associated with 12 plasma proteins after adjusting for age, education, smoking, and established cardiovascular risk factors (Bonferroni-corrected P < 0.000069). Of these 12 proteins, interleukin-6 was associated with increased incidence of imminent MI [hazard ratio, HR 1.22; 95% confidence interval, CI (1.09-1.37)], tumour necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 11A was associated with increased long-term MI incidence [HR 1.22 (1.01-1.48)] and 11 proteins were associated with increased mortality [HR 1.14-1.30 (1.01-1.42)]. CONCLUSION: These findings confirm and extend our understanding of how physical activity could assert its beneficial effect on cardiovascular health through proteins involved with modulating inflammatory, immune, and metabolic pathways. Further research is needed to explore the causal mechanisms behind these associations. LAY SUMMARY: In this study, we aimed to investigate (i) whether leisure time physical activity level cumulated over 20 years is associated with 720 plasma proteins and (ii) if proteins that are significantly associated with leisure time physical activity level across 20 years in Part 1 are also associated with imminent and long-term risk of myocardial infarction (MI) and mortality.Higher physical activity level over 20 years was inversely associated with 12 plasma proteins involved in inflammatory, immune, and metabolic processes. Several plasma proteins were in turn associated with MI and mortality.Findings confirm and extend our understanding how physical activity could assert its beneficial effect on cardiovascular health via the circulating plasma proteins.
BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity contributes to systemic disease burden and premature mortality worldwide. Leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) improves health outcomes; however, its genetic determinants, particularly in Asian populations, remain unclear. This study aimed to identify genetic loci associated with LTPA in the Taiwanese population. METHODS: We conducted genome-wide association studies in 122,258 Taiwan Biobank participants. LTPA was assessed both as a binary trait (regular exerciser vs non-exerciser) and an ordinal trait (categorized by MET-hours per week into low, moderate, and high physical activity levels). Logistic and ordinal logistic regression models were used under an additive genetic model, adjusting for age, age 2 , sex, body mass index, smoking, and the first 10 genetic principal components. Candidate nonsynonymous mutations were further examined in 1494 whole-genome sequenced participants. RESULTS: Binary trait genome-wide association studies identified genome-wide significant (GWS) loci at ATXN2 (12q24.12), FTO (16q12.2), and NOTCH4 (6p21.32), with associations for FTO and NOTCH4 only observed in body mass index (BMI)-adjusted models. Ordinal trait analysis (<10, 10-<20, ≥20 MET·h·wk -1 ) identified a single GWS locus at BRAP (12q24.12). Fine-mapping of 12q24.12 revealed multiple GWS single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in strong linkage disequilibrium with lead variants; these signals largely disappeared after conditional analysis, consistent with a single underlying association. Whole-genome sequencing and linkage disequilibrium analysis identified three GWS nonsynonymous mutations, with ALDH2 rs671 emerging as the most likely causal variant. CONCLUSIONS: ATXN2-ALDH2 region on chromosome 12q24.12 was identified as a key locus for LTPA in Taiwanese individuals. These findings enhance our understanding of the genetic basis of physical activity and may inform future precision medicine and public health strategies.
PURPOSE: Polygenic scores (PGSs) may help assess genetic predisposition to multifactorial traits. We examined whether age, sex, and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) modify the association between a PGS for handgrip strength (HGS) and measured HGS in older adults. METHODS: PGS for HGS (PGS hgs) , based on Pan-UK Biobank genome-wide association study data, was calculated for 5103 participants (aged 40-96; 44% women) from eight twin cohorts in Denmark, Sweden, Australia, the United States, and Finland within the IGEMS consortium. Sex-standardized HGS and self-reported LTPA were assessed cross-sectionally. Linear mixed models estimated associations between PGS hgs and HGS, including interactions with age, country, and LTPA, as well as an association between PGS hgs and LTPA. Fixed-effect within-pair models were conducted to assess environmental contributions. RESULTS: Higher PGS hgs was associated with greater HGS (β = 2.14, SE = 0.15, P < 0.001), explaining 4.6% of HGS variance overall, with modest variation across countries. In sex-stratified models, PGS hgs explained 5.2% of the variance in females and 4.3% in males. No statistically significant interaction with age was found. A significant PGS hgs × LTPA interaction (β = -0.034, P = 0.013) indicated that the association between LTPA and HGS was more pronounced among individuals with lower PGS hgs . The within-pair models offered limited support for the independent environmental impact of LTPA. CONCLUSIONS: The PGS hgs was associated with measured HGS in the meta-analysis, highlighting the potential of PGSs to capture individual differences in strength-related traits across populations. The association of PGS hgs with HGS was moderated by LTPA, such that the beneficial impact of LTPA on HGS was greater among individuals with a lower genetic propensity for HGS.
During a prospective study of 58 patients entering home hemodialysis training, systematic interviews revealed that thirteen (22 per cent) of the patients were suffering depressive disorder. Depressed patients were more likely than nondepressed patients to have experienced a decline in job performance during the previous year, applied for disability income, and reduced leisure activities after the beginning of training. Further, the only two patients complaining of "quite a lot" of anxiety during dialyses were both found to be suffering depressive disorder. Polycystic kidney disease and depressive disorder were significantly positively associated in this patient sample. Possible implications of that association are discussed.
Patients who were admitted to Auckland Hospital with an eye injury during 1975 have been considered. The cause of injury, type of injury and visual outcome have been recorded. At least 60 percent of the eye injuries occurred during leisure activities. In this study more patients were admitted with an hyphaema following sports injuries and fewer admitted after motor mower injuries than in an earlier study. Some preventative measures in eye injury are discussed.
This paper describes the work done by ASBAH in the field of social independence training since November 1977. The aims of the training scheme are to encourage young people toward accepting responsibility for the course of their own lives, and to prepare them to take fuller advantage of the opportunities for further education and training and a wider range of leisure activities. Problems so far encountered - physical, vocational and emotional, are examined and proposals made for further development in this area of work.

Data on state of the illness and social development are reported in 43 hemophilic boys. The items cover factor activity, degree of physical handicap, frequency of bleedings and hospitalisations as well as the topic of a psychophysiological mechanism in the genesis of bleedings. Further items of social development pertain to school, leisure-time activities and ideas of future occupation.
A cohort of 63 mentally retarded adults from three state schools was studied longitudinally for almost 4 years from the time they were resettled at a community residence in a large city. The purpose of the study was to determine whether changes in self-image, interpersonal relationships, work experience, use of leisure time, personal decision-making, and social competency would occur as a result of living in a new environment. Results of three interviews at different points in time were compared and presented by Birenbaum and Seiffer (1976). In the present study we compared results obtained through third- and fourth-wave interviews of 42 residents who remained at the community residence for almost 4 years. Respondents were found to maintain steady involvement in sheltered workshops and have some personal relations with peers, but they were less active participants in leisure activities in the community and more restricted in personal decision-making at home.
