Selected list of books and journals for a small dental library.

This subject list of 109 dental books and 20 dental journals is intended to help the dental book committee and the librarian of a small health sciences library achieve a balanced collection of dental books and journals. Cost of books totals $2,180.00, that of journals is $571,00, making a total of $2,751.00. Cost of starred books totals $927.30, that of starred journals is $109.50, making a total of $1,036.80.

A dental library current awareness service.

A simple, manual current awareness service at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry, designed to provide the user with photocopied tables of contents from selected journals, is described. Other available current awareness and selective dissemination of information services are discussed, and a general comparison and cost analysis is made between the USC program and SDILINE. The service was evaluated by means of a questionnaire distributed to the 30 faculty participants. Results indicate that the service is of value in the teaching and research programs of the school, and has a high degree of user acceptance. Cost of the service is minimal considering the benefits to the faculty.

Classification schemes for dental school libraries.

The provision of an efficient and acceptable library system for the dental literature is examined. It is suggested that an index to the dental literature is best provided by a combination of Index Medicus and Medical Subject Headings. The Library of Congress scheme would be best for an autonomous dental school and, where a dental school library is provided by a large medical library, the National Library of Medicine Classification would be suitable for dental student use.

Health science libraries in the United States: a five-year perspective.

Two surveys of the universe of health science libraries in the United States have been completed by the Medical Library Association's Committee on Surveys and Statistics over a five-year period. This paper compares, for 1969 and 1973, summary data on the universe, and the distribution of libraries, resources, personnel, and salaries.

Profile, data, and management of two learning resource centers, 1970--1978.

Eight years' data have been collected in the operation of learning resource centers (LRCs) for medical and dental students at the Medical College of Virginia Campus, Virginia Commonwealth University. Data present evidence of high utilization of facilities and materials, including the successful use of small group cluster carrels. Management concepts and strategies to account for the data are identified and the LRC profile discussed for an understanding of how the strategies are implemented. These management concepts--responsiveness to students, interaction with faculty, and delivery of coordinated service--are transferable to other institutions and serve as guidlines for efficient management of LRC space, staff, equipment, and acquisition in support of medical and dental school curricula.

Dental learning resources center.

The University of Kentucky College of Dentistry has been operating the Dental Sciences Study Center since 1971 to support a curriculum with a large percentage of individualized instruction. Three crucial aspects of the Study Center were discussed: the facilities, the instructional materials, and the atmosphere. Administrative attention to and support of each aspect are essential to the successful functioning of a learning resources center in a largely individualized dental curriculum.
