[Endangering of the Liechtenstein population by the early-summer meningoencephalitis virus].

There have been a few severe cases of tick-borne encephalitis in Liechtenstein during the last 20 years. To form a better idea of the risk of infection and the potential benefit of vaccination, a total of 311 sera from different cohorts were investigated for antibodies to tick-borne encephalitis. The mean seroprevalence found was 3.6% and was not higher even in persons who were active in professional forestry. The antibodies measured derived in all groups mainly from previous vaccination and in only 2 cases (0.6%) from natural infection. It is concluded that the risk of TbE infection in Liechtenstein is very low. Therefore, a reduction in cases would probably be achieved only by mass vaccination.

Detection of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus in Liechtenstein.

In this study, we present the first detection of a focus of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus-infected ticks in Liechtenstein. The focus is located on a much-used forest path near Vaduz, the capital of the principality. The virus isolated is a representative of the Western subtype of the TBE virus. It is thus closely related to or identical with the other strains isolated in western Europe.

[Borna disease in Switzerland and in the principality of Liechtenstein].

Borna disease (BD) is a rare immunopathological disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) caused by infection with Borna disease virus (BDV) and histologically characterized by mononuclear encephalomyelitis. BD primarily affects equines and sheep in well defined endemic areas of central Europe, but BDV infections have also been reported in other host species including humans, as well as in non endemic regions. In this paper recent data on the pathogenesis of BD are reviewed and the current situation in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein is summarized.

Salivary Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacilli levels and buffer capacity in children with esophageal burns.

Children with esophageal burns due to toxic ingestion are medically compromised in many ways. They have problems like strictures in esophagus, dysphagia, gastroesophageal reflux and necessity to be fed with a special soft diet. Taking these distinctive features into consideration, we aimed to study these children with special focus on the dental caries risk. The experimental group consisted of 33 children between 2 and 14 years old (mean age 6.42 +/- 0.56) who had received stricture treatment in the Pediatric Surgery Department of our university. The control group consisted of 20 healthy children aged between 3 and 14 (mean age 7.25 +/- 0.7) who applied to the Pedodontics department for dental treatment. While mean dfs (+/- SE) was 11.13 +/- 2.30 and mean DMFs (+/- SE) was 9.79 +/- 4.76 in the experimental group, mean dfs (+/- SE) was found as 11.53 +/- 2.16 and mean DMFS (+/- SE) was 1.90 +/- 0.56 in control group. For the determination of Streptococcus mutans (SM), Lactobacilli (LB) and Buffer capacity (BC), salivary tests of Dentocult SM (Vivacult SM Vivadent-Liechtenstein), Dentocult LB (Vivacult LB-Vivadent-Liechtenstein) and Dentobuff (Vivacult BC-Vivadent-Liechtenstein) were applied to both groups. Our findings were evaluated statistically and compared by the Mann Whitney Confidence Test. The amount of Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacilli and the level of buffering capacity in the children with esophageal burns showed a high caries risk. Positive correlations were found between SM and LB, SM and dfs, LB and dfs levels and DMFs and duration of stricture treatment (p < 0.05). However, negative correlations were found between BC and DMFs, DMFs and tooth brushing habit, dental visit and DMFs (p < 0.05). The mean DMFs, LB and SM levels were lower and BC levels were higher in the control group. Although a significant difference was found between DMFs scores (p < 0.05), no significant difference was found between LB, BC, SM and dfs levels (p > 0.05). It could be concluded that children with esophageal burns have high dental caries risk and for this reason parental counseling about oral hygiene, diet, dental plaque controlling and preventive dental regimens have an importance in these medically compromised children.

Effect of Cervitec varnish on the salivary Streptococcus mutans levels in the patients with fixed orthodontic appliances.

The aim of the present study was to assess the efficiency of a 1% chlorhexidine-containing varnish (Cervitec, Vivadent, Liechtenstein) on the levels of Streptococcus mutans in saliva of patients with fixed orthodontic appliances using the Dentocult-SM (Vivadent, Liechtenstein) technique for the microbiological investigation. Eighty subjects participated in the study and, divided randomly into two equal groups in which one group was treated with the placebo varnish (Vivadent, Liechtenstein) for negative controls. Streptococcus mutans in saliva of the subject was sampled and enumerated by using the Dentocult-SM dip-slide technique for periods of one, two four and twelve weeks after a single varnish application. The results were evaluated statistically. After the chlorhexidine containing varnish treatment the levels of Streptococcus mutans in saliva were significantly reduced after one week (p < 0.01) and continued reduction for one month (p < 0.05). After twelve weeks Streptococcus mutans levels in saliva were given a relative increase. No significant suppression was found in the placebo group (p > 0.05). The results suggested that Cervitec varnish reduces salivary Streptococcus mutans levels and that the application should be repeated every 3 months to get antibacterial effect.

Tensile bond strength of orthodontic brackets bonded with a fluoride-releasing light-curing adhesive. An in vitro comparative study.

A light-curing, fluoride-releasing adhesive (VP 862, Vivadent, Liechtenstein) for bonding of brackets has been produced for inhibition of white spot lesions during orthodontic treatment. The tensile bond strength after 24 hours and 6 months was investigated and compared with two other light-curing adhesives (Transbond, 3M Corp., Monrovia, Calif., and Heliosit-Orthodontic, Vivadent, Liechtenstein) and two chemical-curing adhesives (Concise, 3M, Monrovia Calif., and Saga Bond, Saga Orthodontics, Kongsvinger, Norway). All adhesives produced adequate strength to be recommended for clinical use. The light-curing adhesives produced slightly lower bond strengths after 24 hours and 6 months, except Transbond, which showed an increase in bond strength in this period approaching the two chemical adhesives.

TBE foci in Switzerland.

To give information about the situation in Switzerland and especially in the canton Thurgau. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in Switzerland has to be reported to official bodies, such as the Cantonal Office of Health and the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health. The registered cases are published weekly in the Bulletin of the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health. A map with geographical sites of infection has been published by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health from time to time. In addition we collect epidemiological data in our diagnostic setting servicing part of eastern Switzerland. The situation of every patient diagnosed in our laboratory is followed up by a questionnaire. Some data derive from an epidemiological study conducted by Baumberger et al. (1996) and from another study conducted in the principality of Liechtenstein (Krech et al., 1992). The data of a more recent publication are also included (Schwanda et al., 2000). More historical data are taken from Krech (1980). Recently, the global positioning system (GPS) connected to a laptop computer containing a geographical map on CD-ROM was used for better determination of possible TBE microfoci. TBE is endemic in areas of northern Switzerland and the principality of Liechtenstein. The number of reported new infections in Switzerland per year ranges between 60 and 120 cases, most of them with neurological manifestations. This represents an incidence of 0.5-1.5 per 100,000 inhabitants per year. In the last 10 years a prominent increase of the number of reported cases occurred in Switzerland, namely from 30-70 cases per year to 60-120 cases per year. This increase was mainly caused by the emergence of TBE in the cantons of Thurgau, Aargau and St. Gallen, all localised in the north-eastern part of Switzerland. The canton Thurgau became the most dangerous region in Switzerland for TBE during the last ten years. Besides the known endemic areas of the regions of Schaffhausen, Thun and Biel-Ins, a number of additional foci have been detected during the last 20 years. These are situated, for instance, around the lake of Zurich or in the region of Chur. In the canton Thurgau, new cases could be located east of the formerly known foci. Besides the larger epidemic areas known there are several TBE virus microfoci in Switzerland and more microfoci are still recognized. Despite active vaccination of persons at risk the incidence of reported TBE cases has increased during the last 20 years, now being between 60 and 120 cases per year, some of them with a severe and prolonged course. No TBE foci have been recognized in western und southern Switzerland so far. From our observations we have got the impression that real new TBE foci are emerging in some regions of eastern Switzerland.

The effect of bonding agents on the microleakage and bond strength of sealant in primary teeth.

This in vitro study investigated the effect of use of three dentine bonding agents: Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus (3M Dental Products, St. Paul, Minnesota, U.S.A.), Syntac (Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), Optibond Dual Cure (Kerr, Romulus, MI, U.S.A.) on microleakage and shear bond strength of a fissure sealant (Helioseal F, Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) bonded to either dry or wet (saliva contaminated) enamels of primary teeth. Newly extracted 112 non-carious primary teeth were sectioned and embedded in resin blocks. Eight groups were formed for each test. Each group consisted of 14 specimens. Group 1 and 2: fissure sealant was applied directly to etched enamel in dry and wet condition, respectively; Group 3 and 4: fissure sealant was applied onto etched and Scotch-bond Multi-Purpose Plus treated enamel in dry and wet condition, respectively; Group 5 and 6: fissure sealant was applied onto etched and Syntac treated enamel in dry and wet condition, respectively; Group 7 and 8: fissure sealant was applied onto etched and Optibond Dual Cure treated enamel in dry and wet condition, respectively. The results revealed that the use of an enamel-dentine bonding agent under fissure sealant increased the bond strength and decreased the microleakage. The use of enamel-dentine bonding agents under sealant in moisture contaminated conditions gave better results than applying sealant alone onto non-contaminated teeth. Finally, Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus yielded the best results for both tests.

The suitability of packable resin-based composites for posterior restorations.

BACKGROUND: Packable composites, promoted for the restoration of stress-bearing posterior teeth, have captured clinicians' interest. METHODS: The authors tested three packable composites (Alert, Jeneric/Pentron; Solitaire, Heraeus Kulzer, Wehrheim, Germany; SureFil, Dentsply De Trey, Konstanz, Germany); a new packable organically modified ceramic, or ormocer (Definite, Degussa AG, Hanau, Germany); a hybrid composite (Tetric Ceram, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and an ion-releasing composite (Ariston pHc, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein). They determined modulus of elasticity according to EN 24049:1993 of the European Committee for Standardization. They measured Vickers hardness using a 200-gram load for 40 seconds. To determine the materials' depth of cure, they used both a scraping method (International Standards Organization standard CD 4049:1997) and a hardness profiling method. RESULTS: The authors calculated means and standard deviations from 10 replications of each test and used one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey tests (alpha = .05). The materials had significant differences (P < .001) in all characteristics. Solitaire had the significantly lowest elastic modulus and microhardness; Alert had the highest values for these characteristics. Ariston pHc exhibited the significantly lowest depth of cure. There was a significant correlation between the two methods of measuring depth of cure (r2 = 0.9945; P = .021). CONCLUSIONS: The material group of packable composites is rather inhomogeneous in terms of mechanical and physical data. Our data suggest that bulk curing of packable composites in deep cavities still is not recommendable. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: The clinician needs to select packable composites carefully, as it seems that not all of these materials quality for stress-loaded posterior restorations.

Color stability of different denture teeth materials: an in vitro study.

The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the color stability of commercially available porcelain, reinforced acrylic, and conventional acrylic denture teeth materials used in removable prostheses. Two brands of porcelain (Unilux-Enta Lactona-Holland and Vivoperl-Ivoclar-Liechtenstein), 2 brands of reinforced acrylic (Optodent-Bayer-Germany and Ivolek-Ivoclar-Liechtenstein), and 2 brands of conventional acrylic (Isodent-Güney Diş Deposu-Turkey and Samed-Turkey), were made, for a total of 6 different denture teeth groups. Denture teeth were subjected to 3 staining solutions (filtered coffee, tea, and cola) and distilled water. From each group of denture teeth, 4 sets of maxillary anterior denture teeth were immersed in each of the 4 solutions. The color values of denture teeth were measured colorimetrically with the Gardner XL 20 Tristimulus Colorimeter (Gardner Lab. Inc., Bethesda, Maryland, USA). Color changes were characterized in the CIEL*a*b* color space. Color change values were determined after 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks. The color difference values were calculated and then evaluated by two-way ANOVA statistically. The filtered coffee solution was found to be more chromogenic than the other 2 staining solutions, while porcelain denture teeth materials were more color stable. Assuming the color change of deltaE* < 1.0 as a discernible limit and deltaE* = 3.3 as an acceptable value, the filtered coffee, tea, and cola had slight staining effects on all 6 groups of denture teeth.
