[Development of antiviral therapeutic agents from traditional medicines].

Traditional medicines contain various metabolites derived from nucleic acid, protein, and lipid metabolism. Some of these specific metabolites may recognize the differences between viral and host metabolism resulting in anti-viral activity; hence traditional medicines may be useful sources for new antiviral agents. Traditional medicines can be cheaply obtained and have been orally administered as hot-water extracts. Therefore, they may be used for the prophylactic and therapeutic treatment of viral infection by drinking them, such as coffee or tea. Here we describe how the antiviral activity of traditional medicines was screened in vitro and how their therapeutic antiviral activities were verified in vivo, to obtain traditional antiviral medicines that can be clinically used. Therefore, we have selected 12 herbal extracts, from more than 250 herbal medicines, that exhibit therapeutic activities against cutaneous herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 (HSV-1) infection in mice. Four of the 12 augmented the therapeutic efficacy of acyclovir (ACV) in mice and showed potent anti-HSV activity against infection with ACV-resistant HSV-1 mutants in mice. These herbal extracts selectively inhibited viral DNA synthesis and showed a different mode of anti-HSV-1 action from that of ACV. They were also effective against both recurrent HSV and cytomegalovirus infections, without toxicity. Such prophylactic and therapeutic antiviral activities of the traditional medicines were verified by the purification of major active compounds. We could show new indications of traditional medicines as antiviral agents. Thus, the drinking of the extracts, in a daily tea or coffee, may be used for prophylaxis and therapy of diseases caused by herpes virus infection and improve the quality of life.

Evaluation of local resources in traditional medicine.

Traditional medicine represents a cultural rediscovery of local traditions. The actual and potential resources in traditional medicine and the problems of integration of modern and traditional medicine are summarized. A clinical-pharmacological methodology should be applied to evaluations of the efficacy of plants and their preparations in order to delimit the toxicological aspects. Integration between traditional and modern medicine could be obtained with the collaboration of African scientists and the formation of physicians with a good knowledge of traditional medicine.

A new approach to Chinese traditional medicine.

Traditional medicine in China has as yet been unsatisfactorily analyzed from the point of view of the history of ideas. It has come to be viewed as a monolithic system of therapy, and overlooked has been the fact that as time passed various originally different traditions and concepts were made to fit into all-embracing systems, intimately connected with a general way of thought. Theoretical superstructure in medicine has to be delineated from simple empirical observations. Only the latter can be a meaningful object for medical interest today--the theories are better studied within other disciplines.

Acute salicylism due to accidental ingestion of a traditional medicine.

Traditional medicine is practised to some degree in all cultures. Many different types of herbal preparations and "oils" are widely used in Malaysia, too. We report a case of acute salicylism due to accidental ingestion of one brand of such oils. Compulsory labelling of traditional drugs with their chemical ingredients is suggested for proper and timely management of such cases.

[Traditional medicine practices and health planning (example of traditional medicine in Mauritania, Adrar region)].

Diseases and symptoms observed in the Adrar (a region of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania) in traditional medicine are distinguished by the cause which is ascribed. There are fevers and other symptoms linked up to events of social life. The traditional treatments, which are very varied and numerous, use of plant, animal and mineral products of the ecosystem, are practiced by traditional practitioners. The deep knowledge of these practices will permit us to improve the medical planning, associating them in our primary health care strategies.

[Set clinical therapeutic guideline in traditional medicine urgently].

Traditional medicine (TM) has been practiced in China for several thousand years. To better standardize the behaviors of medical staff of TM, rapidly improve their professional level, effectively and reasonably distribute TM resources, decrease the unnecessary application of medical care and suppress the rapidly increasing medical expenses, it is necessary to urgently set clinical therapeutic guideline in TM under the direction of evidence based medicine (EBM). The article also discusses the main existing problems and their solutions in setting clinical therapeutic guideline in TM.

In contact with traditional medicine.

Nigerian traditional medical practice was a part of the empirical world traditional medicine. However, it is still with us after over 500 years of contacts with modern medical practice. It is the only form of medical are available to the majority of the Nigerian population and is also the first line of defence against disease in a great proportion of people even amongst the enlightened city dwellers and the elites. Although the Nigerian traditional healers including the herbalists are general practitioners, the more successful ones do specialise. Some of the traditional herbal treatments for common diseases as well as preventive medical practice are examined. Recommendations for future improvements in the systems are made.

Antimalarial activity of medicinal plants used in traditional medicine in S. Tomé and Príncipe islands.

The present study investigates the antimalarial activity of 13 medicinal plants used in traditional medicine in S. Tomé and Príncipe (STP) islands in the Gulf of Guinea, aiming at identifying the most effective plants for further research. Fieldwork was carried out with the collaboration of 37 traditional healers from both islands, during an ethnobotanical study, which was conducted from 1993 to 1999. Our results indicate that the traditional healers in STP use several medicinal plants against fever and/or 'malaria' which reveal strong antiparasitic activity in vitro: four of the plant extracts have evident antiplasmodial activity against chloroquine resistant Plasmodium falciparum, with IC(50) values <10 microg/ml, and also revealed hepatic schizontocidal activity (<5-35 microg/ml). In vivo, the extracts caused partial reduction of Plasmodium berghei parasitaemia in mice.

[Progress in research of aldose reductase inhibitors in traditional medicinal herbs].

The traditional medicinal herbs are natural product, and have no obviously toxic action and side effect, and their resources are extensive. The adverse effects produced by aldose reductase inhibitors in traditional medicinal herbs are less than those from chemical synthesis and micro-organism, they can effectively prevent and delay diabetic complication, such as diabetic nephropathy, vasculopathy, retinopathy, peripheral neuropathy, and so on. They will have a wonderful respect. Flavonoid compounds and their derivates from traditional medicinal herbs are active inhibitors to aldose reductase, such as quercetin, silymarin, puerarin, baicalim, berberine and so on. In addition, some compound preparations show more strongly activity in inhibiting aldose reductase and degrading sorbitol contents, such as Shendan in traditional medicinal herbs being active inhibitors and Jianyi capsule, Jinmaitong composita, Liuwei Di-huang pill, et al. The progresses definite functions of treating diabetes complications have been reviewed.

Repertory of drugs and medicinal plants used in traditional medicine of Afghanistan.

The traditional uses of plants for medicine were studied in Afghanistan. To date, 215 medicinal plants have been identified and are presented in a table with the vernacular name (in Dari, Pashto and Kati), the geographical and ecological distribution, and the medicinal use. This study of traditional medicine demonstrates a close relationship between the kinds of medicinal plants used and pathology, and thus may serve as an indicator of the major health problems of the people.

Chromatography of medicinal plants and Chinese traditional medicines.

Applications of chromatographic techniques to medicinal plants and Chinese traditional medicines are outlined in this review. Areas involved are quantitation of active principles or index or principal components; quality evaluation of crude drugs; identification, characterization and preparative isolation of new compounds for medical use from plants; analysis of pharmaceutical preparations of plant origin and pharmacokinetic and pharmacological studies of herbal drugs and their preparations.
