A study on the differences in recovery effects of different types of nutritional supplements on competitive performance of esports athletes under mental fatigue.

BACKGROUND: To compare the effects of different nutritional supplements on the recovery of core competitive performance abilities in esports athletes following mental fatigue and to observe changes in the autonomic nervous system during recovery after nutritional supplementation by monitoring heart rate variability (HRV). METHODS: A randomized crossover within-subject controlled experimental design was adopted, including nutritional supplement type (caffeine, nitrate, Ginkgo biloba extract, catechins, placebo) × mental fatigue state (initial, fatigued, post-supplementation). Twenty high-level first-person shooter (FPS) esports athletes were recruited. Mental fatigue was induced using a Stroop task. After ingesting the different supplements and resting for 60 minutes, the participants completed assessments of shooting accuracy, shooting stability, spatial localization, and multitasking ability using the KovaaK's simulation trainer. HRV indices were also recorded to evaluate changes in autonomic regulation. RESULTS: For shooting accuracy, compared with the placebo condition, all four supplements significantly improved shooting accuracy scores following mental fatigue (all p < 0.05); however, no significant differences were observed among the effects of the different supplements. For shooting stability, caffeine, nitrate, and catechins produced significant recovery effects on shooting stability (all p  < 0.05); however, no significant differences were observed among the effects of these three supplements. For spatial localization and multitasking ability, the improvements in these two abilities in the post-supplementation state may have resulted from natural recovery, and none of the four nutritional supplements demonstrated a significant recovery effect. The HRV results showed that indices including RMSSD and SDNN changed under some supplement conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Mental fatigue significantly reduced the competitive performance of esports athletes. Four types of nutritional supplements all promoted the recovery of shooting accuracy, while caffeine, nitrate, and catechins promoted the recovery of shooting stability. However, no additional recovery advantages of the nutritional supplements over placebo were identified for spatial localization or multitasking ability. Changes in HRV may reflect changes in autonomic regulation during recovery, but further research is still warranted.

[Physical and mental fatigue of probable hyperuricemia origin].

A blood uric acid analysis has been effected on 193 Iranians of the intellectual group aged from 25 to 60, of which the normal average rate for 99 women and 94 men of a normal state are (47.5 +/- 2.73) and (53.62 +/- 2.73) respectively. After having controlled the uricemia of these subjects during a period of three years in the three states of healthiness, fatigue or physical strains and sickness, we have been able to note that during physical fatigue and intellectual strains the uricemia presents an augmentation notable as in the case of the sicknesses. Taking into consideration the hyperuricemia resulting from fatigue and strains, it may be noteworthy to be taken into consideration by the clinical laboratories and the physicians as well.

Loss of hybridizable ribosomal DNA from human post-mitotic tissues during aging: II. Age-dependent loss in human cerebral cortex--hippocampal and somatosensory cortex comparison.

DNA was isolated from the hippocampal and from the somatosensory cortex of 13 humans (at autopsy). In both the cortex and hippocampus, the loss of ribosomal DNA (rDNA), as measured through hybridization in the liquid phase, approximates about 0.9% per year. The r value for somatosensory cortex was about -0.7 and that for the hippocampus was about -0.91. The correlation coefficient between the sets of two samples derived from the same individual (two different areas) in +0.945. These results are consistent with those reported concurrently for human myocardium and with earlier studies conducted with beagle dogs, in which only post-mitotic tissues (brain, heart and skeletal muscle) showed measurable decrements in these key genes. To the degree that the synthesis of new proteins is essential for sustained mental activity, these results are consistent with the observations that Nissl substance is more slowly replenished, following exhaustive work by motor cortical cells, and the fact that many older persons experience mental fatigue during continuous mental work at earlier times than do younger persons. The mechanism of loss is not certain, but may well be related to inadequacies in DNA repair systems, thereby allowing deletion of tandemly duplicated genes through cross-over "episome" formation, followed by degradation of the excised DNA segments. The ratio of loss of rDNA hybridizability in human and dogs in about 1 to 7, which approximates the relative ratios of their lifespans (reciprocals).

Effects of carbohydrate mouth rinse on psychophysiological responses, kinematic variables and technical actions during small-sided soccer games.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effects of carbohydrate mouth rinsing (CHOMR) on various psychophysiological, kinematic, and technical actions during 4-a-side small-sided soccer games (SSGs). METHODS: In a randomized, crossover, double-blind design, 16 young male soccer players (age: 15 ± 1 years; height: 172.6 ± 7.0 cm; body mass: 57.8 ± 7.9 kg) participated in two 4-a-side SSGs separated by one week following either CHOMR or placebo (PLA). During each SSGs, heart rate (HRmean, %HR, and HRmax), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), enjoyment, visual analogue scale (VAS) to perceived mental fatigue, mood states, total distance (TD), high-speed running distance (HSRD), average metabolic power (AMP), high metabolic load distance (HMLD), sprint distance (SD), acceleration (ACC), deceleration (DEC), and technical actions (e.g. passing, tackling, shooting, and interceptions) were assessed. RESULTS: Compared with PLA, CHOMR resulted in significantly higher RPE (p = 0.025, g = 0.86) and significantly lower VAS scores (p = 0.010, g = -0.71). In addition, the CHOMR condition showed significantly higher values for interceptions, successful tackles, unsuccessful tackles, unsuccessful shots, and goals (p < 0.05, g = 0.96-2.02), whereas block values were significantly higher in the PLA condition. There were no statistically significant differences in HRmean, %HR, HRmax, enjoyment, TD, HSRD, AMP, HMLD, SD, ACC, DEC, successful passes, unsuccessful passes, successful shots, or mood states between the conditions (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The current study findings suggest that CHOMR may enhance selected technical actions and lower VAS scores during 4-a-side SSGs, although it was also associated with higher RPE and did not alter the kinematic responses. In conclusion, CHOMR was associated with higher RPE, lower mental fatigue, and selective improvements in technical actions, with no significant effects on kinematic variables or HR.

Fatigue in industry.

Physical fatigue is a painful phenomenon which is localised in overstressed muscles. Mental fatigue is a diffuse sensation of weariness; it is a functional state, one of several intermediate conditions between the two extremes of alarm and sleep. A neurophysiological model of fatigue, involving an activating and inhibitory system has been developed. Fatigue in industrial practice has clinical symptoms: psychic instability, fits of depression and increased liability to illness. Indicators of fatigue are work of performance, subjective feelings of fatigue, electroencephalography, flicker-fusion frequency and various psychomotor and mental tests. Several field studies do, to some extent, confirm the above-mentioned concept of fatigue.

Ergonomics. Reducing mental and physical fatigue in the dental operatory.

The work output and the mental and physical fatigue generated by a dental procedure is affected by the length and type of operation, physical facilities, the amount of cooperation given by the patient, operating techniques, and the effective teamwork and rapport of the operatory dental team. Fatigue is also generated by stresses that arise outside of the office and which, when superimposed over the normal operating stresses of the office, can have a cumulative effect of decreasing output and increasing mental and physical fatigue for the dentist, the assistant, and the patient. Probably the three most important means to compensate for both routine and nonroutine physical and mental stresses of any type or origin are: (1) learn to cope with or resolve the origin of the stress; (2) develop a pattern of healthy living; (3) cultivate job satisfaction.

Saccadic velocity characteristics: intrinsic variability and fatigue.

Saccadic eye movements exhibit a characteristic peak velocity vs. amplitude relationship. As with all quantifications of biological function, there exists and associated intra- and intersubject variability of this relationship. This paper documents this variability and demonstrates both the absence of a predictable short-term "muscle fatigue" effect and the presence of a generalized "mental fatigue" (i.e. tiredness) effect.

Some effects of ACTH 4-10 on performance during a serial reaction task.

Eighteen subjects worked continuously for half an hour in a self-paced reaction task. Half of the subjects were injected with ACTH 4-10 (30 mg/s.c.) and the other half with a placebo. The subjects injected with ACTH 4-10 showed a larger improvement in reaction time during the experimental session than the placebo group. However, this effect disappeared in a short retest, which was given half an hour after the experimental session. These results suggest that ACTH 4-10 has no effect on skill acquisition, but counteracts the build-up of reactive inhibition during the experimental session; that is, the peptide suppresses the decrease in motivation, which usually occurs during continuous performance tasks. This notion is confirmed by an analysis of the frequency distributions of the reaction times. Treatment effects were only found for the long reaction times. Long reaction times tend to occur with increasing frequency as a function of time-on-task and are an indication for the level of motivation of the subject. It was concluded that ACTH 4-10 counteracts the usual decay in performance as a function of time-on-task due to increasing boredom and mental fatigue.

[Evaluation of anginine in the treatment of cerebrovascular disorders (preliminary report)].

The effect of Anginin was assessed in 10 patients with cerebrovascular diseases. Anginin was administered in daily doses of 1.5 g. during a mean time of 5.25 months. The duration of follow-up before, during and after treatment was 2 years. A favourable effect of Anginin was observed on such symptoms as dizziness, disturbances of recent memory, mental fatiguability, difficulties in concentration and irritability. EEG investigations demonstrated a rise in the index of alpha waves, increased frequency and amplitude of alpha waves, and normalization of tracings in cases with pathological abnormalities. The basic laboratory investigations failed to reveal any significant changes. Side effects included transient dyspeptic symptoms were in 5 patients.
