The LogEtronics X-Ray Microfilms system, which is used in our clinic as well as in two other Berufsgenossenschaftliche Unfallkliniken for archiving of x-ray films, has enabled us to microfilm all x-rays of 4 years within 14 months. The conception of the microfilm system has also stood the test from the point of view of fulfilling all legal requirements.
Microfilming of fetal monitoring records has, at our institution, been found to be a practical method for storage of recording papers from fetal monitoring. This system permits a reduction of the records by a factor of 20:1 and up to 7.64 hours of fetal monitroing records will fit into a 4 x 6 inch film jacket. This microfilm record can easily be placed into a patient's chart and can thus easily be retrieved.

When advantage is taken of the newest qualities of microfilms and copy films and when using their special developers and developing machines, it seems today that the microfilming of radiographs on 35 mm film is successful. Equipment in the price range of 67 000 DM is available. It includes automated filming and developing, but slipping microfilms onto the punch card jackets is semi-automatic. The advantage of the equipment is its low price, its small size compared to the Delcomat system, and thus its smaller filing space need. Also, the automation of filing is possible with this system. The system seems to be quite suitable for at least creating and maintenance of teaching files.
The results of one year's routine use of primary microfilm in a large diagnostic radiological institute is reviewed. Positive views were treated by electronic contrast enhancement in an integrated system of immediate filming and filing. The resulting changes and improvements in running the department are described. This involves a fundamental reorganisation of the department, as well as equipment which is not yet commercially available. The latter had therefore to be improvised and is described. Similar procedures introduced elsewhere are critically evaluated. The advantages of immediate filming are stressed and a comparison with conventional large film filing demonstrates its financial advantages. Logical application of the method results in saving in personnel and material, but implies that the radiologist must be prepared to change to positive films in routine diagnosis. By using microfilm positives with a resolution of 4.0 pairs of lines per mm., the results equal those from large film negatives.
The case records of the Psychological Clinic of the University of Pennsylvania the first established in this country, have been transferred to microfilm to save them from desctruction. A survey of the records indicate that they may be valuable in both historical and follow-up research. The microfilms can be made available to qualified investigators with worthy projects.
An assessment of alternative methods of filing histopathology report forms in alphabetical order showed that orthodox card index filing is satisfactory up to about 100000 reports but, because of the need for long-term retrieval, when the reports filed exceed this number they should be copied on jacketed microfilm and a new card index file begun.
