Effects on lower third molars after extraction of second molars.

The material consisted of 78 cases, 44 males and 34 females of the ages of 10-15 years. The orthodontic treatment followed the diagnosis of Class II malocclusion with crowding in the lower jaw. In addition to extraction of lower second molar the treatment consisted of distal driving of lower first molars in different ways. The treated cases were assessed by use of study models and lateral oblique X-rays. No third molars were treated in any cases. The results showed that in the majority of cases the third molars were adequate substitutes for the extracted second molars.

Partial molar volumes of the amino acid side-chains of proteins in aqueous solution: some comments on their estimation using partial molar volumes of amino acids and small peptides.

The partial molar volumes of some amino acid side-chains were determined in two recent studies [Makhatadze, G.I., et al. (1990) Biopolymers 30, 1001, and Reading, J.F. & Hedwig, G.R. (1990) J. Chem. Soc. Faraday Trans. 86, 3117] using partial molar volume data, V02, in aqueous solution at 25 degrees C for some peptides of sequence Gly-X-Gly, where X is an amino acid. These side-chain partial molar volumes are critically compared with those obtained using V02 data for amino acids. It is concluded that side-chain partial molar volumes calculated using V02 data for the tripeptides are better estimates of side-chain partial molar volumes in proteins than are those determined using V02 data for amino acids.

[The condition of the 2d milk molars and the 6 year molars in a Copenhagen suburban community].

The increase in fillings, i. e. in caries, of the second deciduous and first permanent molars was recorded for a period of 18 months, using the dmfs/DMFS index, in 117 children, aged from 7 to 9 years, of the Copenhagen suburb of Brøndby. According to the findings concerning the second deciduous molars, the children were subdivided into three groups of caries incidence. The three groups differed but little in caries progression, which may be explained by the fact that the school dental service ensures the regular treatment of the children and achieves fairly stable results.

[Therapeutic problems in the infraposition of deciduous molars and molars].

Reflections on the nomenclature, aetiology and genesis are followed by seven case reports. Apart from the description of a new aspect of genesis and apart from therapeutical discussions of the single case, the authors draw some conclusions. The infraposition of deciduous molars requires orthodontic therapy, whereas that of permanent molars necessitates treatment at a special clinic. Suggestions for desirable further studies mark the end of the paper.

Tetraploidy in human placenta. A dilemma in molar and non-molar pregnancies.

17 cases of partial molar pregnancy were analysed cytogenetically by the direct-preparation method. Eight partial moles were triploid, 7 diploid/tetraploid mosaic, and 2 tetraploid. In the course of prenatal cytogenetic screening, out of 1,263 chorionic villus samplings, 2 tetraploid and 1 diploid/tetraploid cases were found. These cases of partial moles do not fit into the usual patterns of triploid partial moles. The findings presented here suggest that different causative factors may be involved in the origin of molar degenerations. These results also call to attention that tetraploidy is an existent and relatively common abnormality.
