Maternal deprivation, 1972-1978: new findings, new concepts, new approaches.

Research since 1972 in the field of "maternal deprivation" is critically reviewed. The results are used to reassess briefly the formulations proposed in 1972 and to discuss more fully the meaning and practical implications of fresh findings on new or recently revived topics. These include the development of social relationships and the process of bonding, critical periods of development, the links between childhood experiences and parenting behavior, influences on parenting, and the possible reasons why so many children do not succumb to deprivation or disadvantage.

[Trends and new findings in the assessment of the somatic radiation risk (author's transl)].

New findings are described which enable a more precise estimation of the leukemia and cancer risk by radiation. They concern the risk ratio of cancer to leukemia after whole body irradiation, the shape of the dose-risk-relationship and the time factor problem. Finally a balance of the somatic radiation risk from whole body irradiation is set up and the consequences for the establishment of dose limits are discussed.

Dose-Response Relationship, Radiation

Jerk nystagmus: some new findings.

Eye movements in a subject with jerk nystagmus were recorded during a variety of tracking tasks using a photoelectric method. New findings included ability to reduce nystagmus amplitude and frequency when instructed "to hold the eye steady" rather than "to fixate" in the presence of a visible target, changes in nystagmus characteristics and visual acuity as a function of head position which related to overall retinal-image motion, marked variability of nystagmus especially during reading, and necessity of a prolonged period of visual feedback for generation of nystagmus to approach a "steady-state" level. Clinical implications of these findings are discussed, including use of the "hold" command during ophthalmoscopy in patients with nystagmus.

The gingival platinum line: a new finding following cis-dichlorodiammine platinum (II) treatment.

Cis-dichlorodiammine platinum (II) (DDP) is the salt of a heavy metal with a wide spectrum of antineoplastic activity. Its toxicity is multisystem and similar to that of other heavy metals, including lead and thallium. A young man being treated with primary adjuvant Adriamycin and DDP for osteogenic sarcoma is described who developed a gingival line which temporally was related to DDP administration. Although not chemically or histologically analyzed, we believe this to be a new finding related to DDP which corresponds to the lead line of plumbism and other heavy metal intoxication.

Lead neuropathy. 1) Morphometry, nerve conduction, and choline acetyltransferase transport: new finding of endoneurial edema associated with segmental demyelination.

Morphometric and pathologic studies along the length of the peripheral nervous system were obtained in groups of rats fed 4% lead carbonate for 3 and 6 months and in match-fed controls. The number and diameter histograms of L6 cytons of spinal ganglia and of myelinated fibers of proximal and distal portions of peroneal and sural nerve were not significantly different from the control groups. On the other hand, segmental demyelination occurred approximately as frequently in proximal as in distal parts of nerves. At 3 months approximately 1/3 of teased myelinated fibers showed changes of segmental demyelination (Condition C), or of remyelination after segmental demyelination (Condition F) or of both segmental demyelination and of remyelination (Condition D), while at 6 months more than 4/5ths of fibers showed these changes. As expected, regression lines of axonal area on number of lamellae of myelin, were less steep in nerves of rats fed on lead for 6 months as compared to controls. Axonal transport of choline acetyltransferase in lead neuropathy did not differ from that in control rats. As expected from the studies of others, conduction velocity of myelinated fibers of caudal nerve were low. A new finding was the often quite striking increase of transverse fascicular area of peripheral nerves. This was due to edema which appeared to develop at about the time of onset os segmental demyelination. Although the edema may be an epiphenomenon, it could be an important observation bearing on the development of lead neuropathy. It would be important to know next whether or not the blood nerve barrier is altered in lead neuropathy.

Animals

New findings in the chromosome 13 long-arm deletion syndrome and retinoblastoma.

New clinical and pathologic findings in patients with deletion of the long arm of chromosome 13 (13q-) include optic nerve hypoplasia and retinal dysplasia. Fibroblasts derived from patients with a 13q- syndrome with and without retinoblastoma, as well as from familial and sporadic retinoblastoma, are a useful model for the study of genetic susceptibility to the development of spontaneous and radiation-induced cancers. Fibroblasts from patients with hereditary retinoblastoma appear more radiosensitive than fibroblasts from patients with sporadic retinoblastoma or normal control patients.

Abnormalities, Multiple

[New species and new finds of trombiculid mites of the genus Leptotrombidium in Tadzhikistan (Trombiculidae)].

New species of chiggers from Tadzhikistan are described: Leptotrombidium tamanta sp. n. differs from all other species in having pubescent dorsal and lateral setae on the tibia of palps; L. derlatkoi sp. n. and L. apertum sp. n. are similar with L. smirnovi Kudryashova et Ribin, 1974, from which the former differs in having in the first dorsal row 8 setae instead of 10 and in certain sizes and the latter--in having a smaller number of setae on the body, short barbs on the dorsal setae and sizes. L. solum sp. n. differs from the close species L. europaeum (Daniel et Brelih, 1959) in the number of dorsal setae (43 instead of 34), their location and smaller sizes of the scutum. L. wolandi sp. n. differs from the preceding species by a greater number of NDV and shorter PL. L. multiplex sp. n. is characterized by a great number of setae on the body (104--120). L. smirnovi is first reported from Tadzhikistan.

Animals

[New findings in the epidemiology of viral hepatitis].

At present there is not yet a causal therapy of hepatitis. The modern state of knowledge on the mode of transfer, on the persistence of the causative organisms and the immunological reactions evoked by the causative organisms gives the possibility for new ways in prevention. The HBs Ag-carriers are a reservoir of causative organisms in the sense of chronic carriers. In a particular degree they endanger the personnel of public health. A supplementation of the general hygienic preventive measures by the immunoprophylaxis is desirable.

Acute Disease

[New findings in the study of schizophrenia].

The paper gives a survey on the results of research on etiology and course of schizophrenia. The results of etiological research have not, as yet, progressed so far as to provide measures of primary prevention, whereas the results of research into the course of schizophrenia have already led to practical consequences for therapy resp. rehabilitation of schizophrenic patients. In future, with a decrease in the number of long-stay hospitalizations, the number of schizophrenic out-patients, resp. of prolonged periods of out-patient treatments will increase accordingly. Thus hitherto known influencing factors and treatment strategies will also be due to change. According to present knowledge, etiology, psychopathology, course and outcome of schizophrenia represent a very complex and variable, multifactorially initiated process, in which illness-related and environment-related factors concur. Drafts of new models and instruments for the assessment of this process and subsequent disabilities as well as methodological difficulties herewith are reported.

Diagnosis, Differential

Aarskog syndrome. New findings and genetic analysis.

A patient had several unusual findings that, to our knowledge, have not previously been reported in the Aarskog syndrome (facio-digital-genital syndrome). On the basis of published pedigrees, the data strongly support an X-linked recessive mode of inheritance.

Abnormalities, Multiple

[New findings on the structure of chromosomes (author's transl)].

The structural element of eukaryotic chromosomes is the chromatin fibre consisting of histones and DNA. The chromatin fibre is about 100--200 A thick. One chromatid is built up from one chromatin fibre running through from one end to the other and laid in numerous irregular foldings. The chromatin fibre is a chain of nucleosomes. These are globular histone bodies around which the DNA winds. Nucleosomes can be observed in isolated chromatin fibrils as well as in thin sections of chromosomes after different modes of fixation. Prophasic chromosomes or early premature condensed chromosomes are thin uncoiled threads. With chromosome condensation a major coiling is seen. No constant regular arrangement of the chromatin fibril besides the major coils is observed. A rather diffuse decondensation takes place in ana- and telophase.

Animals

[New findings on an anti-proteinase in human plasma: l'inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor].

Inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor (I alpha I) has been purified from C.N.T.S. fraction III as starting material. The purification procedure includes D.E.A.E. cellulose chromatography and gel filtration on G 150 Sephadex in the presence of EDTA. The purified protein gives one precipitation line in immunoelectrophoresis against anti-whole human sérum. It reacts only with an anti I alpha I immune serum and possesses a strong antitryptic activity. When studied in starch or polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis 2 components are observed, each of them having the same antigenic structure and the same antitryptic activity as the crude preparation. The slower and less important component is dissociated by 0,1% SDS. The molecular weight estimation of I alpha I BY PAA/SDS is about 180,000. This result is not modified by the presence of 1% beta mercaptoethanol indicating that I alpha I consists of one polypeptide chain. Crude preparation reveals under the same electrophoretical conditions small amounts of low molecular weight components (135,000 52,000 and 26,000) which can be due to a proteolytic action on I alpha I. Indeed plasmin is able to produce such fragments having an antitryptic activity as shown by fibrin/polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The relationship between small molecular weight inhibitors of human serum and bronchial secretions and those obtained after degradation of I alpha I by plasmin is discussed.
