[Use of the indirect hemagglutination reaction in studying ornithosis infection. III. The diagnostic value of the IHR with an ornithosis erythocytic diagnosticum].

In both experimental and clinical conditions the passive hemagglutination test (PHAT with the use of an ornithosis erythrocytic diagnostic preparation was found to be sufficiently sensitive and specific as compared with the complement fixation test (CFT), a routine testing method. The study of the dynamics of immune response in infected animals and ornithosis patients allowed to regard the PHAT as a comparatively early method of serological analysis. Hemagglutinins were also found to circulate in the patients' blood sera only for a short time (on the average for 1 1/2--2 months). The CFT and the PHAT with erythrocytic diagnostic preparation, used in combination, will make it possible not only to diagnose ornithosis in patient more effectively, but also to differentiate between the cases of infection and anamnestic reaction.20

[Use of the indirect hemagglutination test for the study of ornithosis. Report 2. Preparation and approbation of the dry ornithosis erythrocyte diagnostic agent].

An original preparation--dry ornithosis erythrocytic diagnostic agent for the indirect hemagglutination test was prepared on the basis of formalinized tannin-treated sheep red blood cells and group-specific phospholipid antigen of the causative agent of ornithosis. This diagnostic agent retained its specific activity for 18 months (observation period). The use of this preparation considerably facilitated the method of performance of this test, this offering a possibility of its wide application in practice. A sufficiently high sensitivity and specificity of the indirect hemagglutination test with the suggested diagnostic agent, in comparison with the complement fixation test was demonstrated.

[Use of the indirect hemagglutination test in the study of ornithosis. I. Hemosensitizing activity of ornithosis phosphlipid antigen and a method of performing tests with it].

A possibility was shown of using the phospholipid group-specific antigen of the ornitosis causative agent in the capacity of a hemosensitin for conducting the indirect hemagglutination test (IHAT). There was revealed a direct proportional relationship between the sensitizing activity and the complement fixing properties of the antigens obtained. A method of sorption of this antigen on the tannin-treated erythrocytes and the optimal parameters of conducting the test with it were elaborated. A sufficiently high sensitivity and specificity of the IHAT was revealed as a result of parallel titration of hetero-and homologous sera in the complement fixation test and in the IHAT. The suggested test can be successfully used for the diagnosis of ornithosis.

[Study data on ornithosis infection in the Azerbaijan SSR].

Data are presented on the study of epizootology and epidemiology of ornithosis. There were revealed natural foci of ornithosis in the Kyzyl-Agach preserve, at the Sary-Su lakes and at the Glinyany island; these foci were dihostal and polyhostal, as well as conjointed (ornithosis, arboviruses, Q-fever, Asian tick-borne typhus, leptospirosis). Anthropurgic foci were found in 12 populated localities, semi-wild dove serving as the main component. Fowl was found to be infected in 12 poultry-farms; occupational ornithosis was present among the bird-rearers. Immunological structure of the population in respect to ornithosis was studied. Patients with various diagnoses showed positive serological reactions retrospectively; there were 155 cases of ornithosis among them.

[Pathomorphology of experimental ornithosis pneumonia].

Model experiments in white mice reproduced chronic ornithosis pneumonia morphological features of which included early outgrowth of connective tissue cells of the type of carnification, considerable accumulation of tropoglycogen, and disturbed process of collagen fibers formation at a minimal number of leukocytes. Such foci occur in the lungs very early, before the onset of the clinical signs of the disease which appears to be a typical feature of ornithosis pneumonia and may explain causes and mechanisms of frequent occurrence of chronic forms of this disease. In cases of significant multiplication of the ornithosis agent there is mass migration of leukocytes into the focus of lesion followed by the development of acute inflammation. Being an obligatory intracellular parasite, the ornithosis agent affects both large and small alveolar cells. Multiplying by binary division, it stays free in the cytoplasm without forming a common vacuole. Ultrastructurally typical various forms of the ornithosis agent reflecting the stages of its complicated life cycle have been detected.

[Detection of humoral antibodies to species-specific and group ornithosis antigens in the dynamics of the infection].

The time course of antibody production to group- and species-specific antigens of ornithosis agent was studied by complement fixation (CFT) and hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) tests. In rabbits after a single intravenous inoculation of the ornithosis agent, antibody to the homologous species-specific antigen appeared in the peripheral blood 3--5 days after inoculation and reached maximum levels during the 1-st week, and to the group-specific antigen could be detected 3--5 days after inoculation but reached maximum titers only 3--4 weeks later. In practical serological diagnosis of ornithosis and other chlamydia infections, the group antigen is used which gives retrospective diagnosis at 10--14 days or later. The results of the study suggest that the use of CFT with the species-specific antigen will not only differentiate ornithosis from other chlamydial infections but also will permit early serological diagnosis of ornithosis.
