[Peritoneoscopy with 2 optical devices: reduced risk - better diagnostic results (author's transl)].

Peritoneoscopy with 2 optical devices was performed in two cases; the technique of this procedure is described. The method allows inspection of areas, which cannot be seen during routine peritoneoscopy, especially of the anterior abdominal wall and of intraabdominal organs covered by adhesions. In addition, this method allows to find out, whether the anterior abdominal wall and vessels in it were injured by the troikart; the risk of the procedure is reduced thereby. Using a second optical device allows to visualize areas, which cannot be studied during routine peritoneoscopy because of intraabdominal adhesions. Thus better diagnostic results can be achieved with this method as compared to the routine technique.

Refinement of an optical device that stabilizes vision in patients with nystagmus.

An optical device that produces partial stabilization of retinal images has been described. It consists of a high-plus spectacle lens used in combination with a large, high-minus, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) contact lens. This device is designed to provide more clear and stable vision in patients with acquired nystagmus due to neurological disease. We report success in using a smaller, rigid, gas permeable (RGP) contact lens that achieves the required degree of stabilization, but is more comfortable for patients than the PMMA contact lens originally described. We have confirmed that the degree of retinal image stabilization is similar to that achieved with the PMMA lens. We present a case report to illustrate its use.

[Light-optical device for fiber light guides].

The paper gives a calculation method for a lighting optical device consisting of light flux concentrator lamps rigidly installed in an ellipsoid reflector with heat-permeable coating, and the parameters of two big concentrator lamps for fibre endoscopes.

An infra-red fibre optic device for cardiac cycle timing and photoplethysmography.

In this work a simple fibre optic device using infra-red radiation is used to obtain information on the timing of the cardiac cycle and blood volume changes in the flow of blood in the body. The device is small, non-invasive and free from interference by surrounding electromagnetic fields enabling it to be used in the environment of such devices as NMR scanners.

[Devic's optic neuromyelitis. 4 cases].

We report 4 cases of neuromyelitis optic (Devic's disease), with 3 to 7 year-follow-up for 3 of them. Most of the data agreed with the previously reported cases: subacute onset, association of optic neuritis and myelitis within several weeks or months, absence of relapse, good prognosis for paraplegia but poor prognosis for visual loss, and effectiveness of corticosteroids on spinal cord involvement in 4 cases. Moreover these 4 cases have revealed the following rare features: unilateral visual disturbance (1 case), total recovery of visual signs (1 case) with only a short period of follow-up, onset during childhood (1 case), onset following an acute lymphocytic meningitis (1 case), and dependency from corticosteroid therapy (2 cases). None of the patients had obvious immunological disturbance. N.M.R. imaging revealed in 2 cases, disseminated demyelinated areas which confirmed neuropathological data from the literature, showing that anatomical lesions could be wider than expected on clinical signs. The poor visual prognosis, the serum inflammatory signs, the epidemiologic data, the high cell and protein levels in C.S.F., and the absence of relapse suggested, in our cases and in most of the previously reported ones, that neuromyelitis optic must be differentiated from multiple sclerosis.

The effect of visual feedback and self-scaling on plaque control behavior.

Psychological factors are involved in inducing patients to practice the plaque control necessary for periodontal health. It is suggested that oral hygiene behavior can be modified by increasing visual feedback by means of optical devices, and by giving patients the task of scaling their own teeth. The optical devices used for intraoral inspection must be specifically designed for this task. A pilot study was undertaken to test the modification in plaque control behavior in patients using a specially-designed optical system and performing self-scaling. Twelve patients participated in the study; six were given optical devices and taught self-scaling and plaque control, whereas the other six acted as controls, received a scaling from a hygienist, and were taught plaque control. All subjects received 3 hours of chairside time. Before treatment both groups had mean PHP indiced (plaque) of 3.2. Five months after the completion of treatment, the experimental group had a mean PHP index of 0.7, whereas the control group had a score of 1.9. The patients performing self-scaling demonstrated that they could remove supragingival calculus and extrinsic stains as effectively as a trained hygienist.

Magnetostrictive calibration of a precision optical measurement device for studies of tooth eruption.

In order to calibrate a precision-measuring instrument for studies of tooth eruption, a calibration device capable of repositioning an optical grating in steps accurate to at least 0.02 microns was required. At this level, piezoelectric and similar pushers encounter problems. A new calibration device based on the magnetostrictive properties of nickel was developed. Accuracy better than 0.02 microns was verified by relating its movements to the wavelength of the green line of mercury, and the device was successfully used to calibrate the instrument for establishing tooth position. Magnetostriction offers a way to calibrate precision measurement instruments for other applications.
