[Palatine tonsils and immunity. VIII. Soluble factors produced by lymphocytes of the palatine tonsils and other lymphoid formations in rabbits].

A comparison was made of the activity of solbule factors produced by thelymphocytes of the palatine tonsils, the appendix, the spleen and thelymph nodes of rabbits in stimulation with a specific antigen (complete antigen of streptococcus, group A) and PHA. The blastogenic factor produced by the lymphoid cells of the spleen and the lymph nodes was highly active. Lymphocytes of the palatine tonsils and of the appendix produced a factor withlow activity after PHA stimulation. A factor intensifying the transformation in the presence of a complete streptococcus antigen was produced by lymphocytes of the spleen and the lymph nodes of the immunized animals. The lymphocytes of the palatine tonsils and the appendix failed to produce this factor.

Hypernephroma metastatic to the palatine tonsils.

Review of the literature discloses 76 cases of carcinoma metastatic to the palatine tonsil. Of these cases reported or mentioned, 51 were detailed sufficiently or occurred frequently enough to allow analysis. We add two new cases of hypernephroma, and also study the courses of patients with primaries of the stomach, breast, lung and melanoma and seminoma. Bilateral tonsilar involvement is found to be very common in melanoma and not uncommon in seminoma and adenocarcinomas of the stomach and breast. It is uncommon for bronchogenic carcinoma and hypernephroma to metastasize to both palatine tonsils. When laterality is present the left tonsil is more commonly involved than the right, except by melanoma. Regarding neoplastic involvement of the primary organ, the left side gives rise to malignancies more often than the right side. Only seminoma has a high incidence of other metastases. The mean time interval between development of the primary and the tonsillar secondary is one year or less in seminomas, bronchogenic carcinomas and adenocarcinomas of the stomach, but 2 1/2 years or more for adenocarcinomas of the breast and kidney and melanomas. The mean time of survival after appearance of the tonsillar metastasis is nine months or less, regardless of the cell type of the primary malignancy.

[Role of the microbial flora of the palatine tonsils in the pathogenesis of chronic tonsillitis].

Species composition and the potency of a microbial focus of the microorganisms on the surface and in the lacunae of the palatine tonsils were studied in 51 patients suffering from chronic tonsillitis and in 52 healthy indivisuals. The species composition of the microorganisms was identical in the groups under study. However, its quantitative indices displayed significant differences. The potency of the microbial focus of the beta-hemolytic streptococci in the tonsillar lacunae of healthy individuals averaged 0.010 +/- 0.02 million, in patients with simple chronic tonsillitis-0.16 +/- 0.05, and in toxicoallergic tonsillitis of the I degree-1.03 +/- 0.8 million microbial cells. The constancy and a marked increase of all the species of microorganisms in the tonsillar lacunae of patients suffering from chronic tonsillitis, and also a marked dependence of this phenomenon on the extent of decompensation of the pathological process led to the conclusion that all of them played a definite role in the pathogenesis of this disease. It is supposed that the pathogenic influence of the mentioned microbes on human organism was realized both on account of summation of the antigenic-allergic and the infectious action, and by its other possible mechanisms.

Nickel content of human palatine tonsils: analysis of small tissue samples by flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

We describe a method for determining the nickel content of small tissue samples by flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry in this case biopsy specimens from human palatine tonsils. Contact between tissue samples and metallic objects was avoided, except for the use of biopsy forceps (Type No. 8150.00 Wolf, stainless steel) for collecting samples, to imitate the actual procedure when small biopsy specimens are removed from the nasal mucosal membranes in nickel workers for histopathological and chemical investigations. Nickel contamination from this instrument was insignificant at the precision of the present procedures. The mean concentration of nickel in 15 tonsils was 13.5 +/- 7.0 (SD) microng/100g (wet wt). The mean nickel concentration in eight different samples of the same tonsil was 5.6 +/- 2.7 (SD microng/100 g.
