[Social significance of research studies in the fields of phthisiology and pulmonology in Uzbekistan].

The direction of research work in phthisiology and pulmonology is determined by the epidemiologic situation for tuberculosis and CNPD in the republic. The results of a complex research work in phthisiology and pulmonology carried out in the rural areas of Uzbekistan, and in the cotton--growing regions in particular, are given. Practical significance of this work is stressed, which comprises direct inspection of the tuberculosis infection foci and subjects in contact and subsequent accomplishment of preventive and health--improvement measures, comprehensive screening of the rural population for tuberculosis and CNPD detection, conduction of chemotherapy and pathogenetic and surgical treatment of tuberculosis patients. The results of research into phthisiology and pulmonology will make the basis of the national program with respect to tuberculosis in Uzbekistan.

Decision to enter pulmonology: motives and implications.

A study was undertaken to determine at what time American-trained pulmonary disease specialists in two California counties made their subspecialty choices and the factors which influenced their decision. Responses to 281 questionnaires were received and analyzed from 171 fellows, faculty members, and practitioners (60.8 percent). Subspecialty decisions for pulmonology were usually made during residency, motivated by pulmonary rotations and exposure to stimulating faculty members. Although this subspecialty has recently developed into an established, growing field, the survey data confirmed that the amount of pulmonary interaction during medical school remains minimal.

[The place of citicolin in pulmonological therapy (author's transl)].

Citicolin, a psychodrug, is usually used for the treatment of ischemic cerebropathies. Its introduction into pulmonological therapy is suggested because Citicolin has the following properties: 1. Prevention of "acute respiratory distress syndrome" in neonates. 2. Improvement of chronic respiratory insufficiency. 3. Prevention of postoperative hypoventilation syndrome. 4. Improvment of respiratoy mechanics in syndromes with hyperelasticity of the lungs. 5. Recovery of permeability of the alveolo-capillary barrier for gases. 6. Compensation of the loss of surface-active substances after endobronchial aspiration of intubated patients.

[Use of computer technology for teaching phthisiology and pulmonology at medical institutes].

The experience of computer technology application at the Phthisiology Department of the Kazan Medical Institute over the last 5 years was generalized. Four classes of the teaching programs were described: program control of the accumulated experience, diagnostic search, a mathematical model of an emergency situation and expert medical systems. Preference is given to the latter two types of programs. It is emphasized that application of the IBM-compatible systems as the most prevalent in clinical practice is promising. Description of the specific programs is presented.
