[Changes in uncoupling protein-2, 3 mRNA expression in the scalded rats after escharectomy at different post scalding stages].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of uncoupling protein (UCP)-2, 3 mRNA in skeletal muscle of the scalded rats after escharectomy at different post scalding stages. METHODS: One hundred and twenty Wistar rats were employed in the study, in which 8 served as normal control (C) and 112 were subjected to 30% TBSA 3rd degree scalding and then again, divided into 4 groups. The rats in A group were sacrificed on 8th, 24th, 96th, 120th and 168th post scalding hours (PSHs) without escharectomy. The rats in B group underwent escharectomy at 8 PSH, and those in C group underwent escharectomy at 24 PSH. All the rats in both groups were sacrificed on 96, 120 and 168 PSHs after escharectomy, Escharectomy was performed at 96 PSH in rats of D group, and they were sacrificed on 120 and 168 PSHs after escharectomy. The serum levels of leptin and TNFalpha, and the expression level of UCP2 mRNA were determined at all time points in all groups of rats. RESULTS: (1) The serum levels of leptin in A group were obviously lower than that in C group (P < 0.01) during 24 approximately 168 PSHs, while those in B, C and D groups were much higher than those in A group (P < 0.01) during 24 approximately 168 PSH. (2) The serum TNFalpha levels in A group at all time points were higher than that in control group, while that in B group at all time points were lower than that in A group (P < 0.05 or 0.01), and that in C group at 168 PSH was lower than that in A group (P < 0.05). (3) The UCP2 mRNA expression in skeletal muscle in A group was increased evidently since 8 PSH (P < 0.01), peaking at 24 PSH and lowering thereafter, while that in B and C groups at 168PSH was significantly lower than that in A group at the same time points (0.32 and 0.35 vs 0.71, P < 0.05). The trend of the change in UCP3 mRNA expression in skeletal muscle was similar to that of UCP2. CONCLUSION: The postburn up-regulation of UCP mRNA expression might play important roles in the increase of metabolic rate. Escharectomy during shock stage could lower down the expression of UCP2 and UCP3 mRNA expression, and it could be beneficial by lowering metabolic rate.

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. II. Serum level of anti exfoliatin and anti alpha-toxin in patients with staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome or bullous impetigo.

In order to study the differences between staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) and bullous impetigo, the anti exfoliatin level was assessed in the sera from both groups of patients, and no significant difference in the level was found. However a significant difference was noted in the anti alpha-toxin levels in sera from both group of patients; that of SSSS patients was much lower than that of impetigo patients and of children in a control group. Five out of 6 patients with SSSS showed an unchaged level of anti alpha-toxin at the second examination, while an increased anti exfoliatin level was noted in 4 out of 6 SSSS patients.

Development of apple superficial scald, soft scald, core flush, and greasiness is reduced by MCP.

1-Methylcyclopropene (MCP) was used to evaluate the role of ethylene in development of apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) physiological disorders during storage. Granny Smith, Red Chief Delicious, and Fuji apple fruit were treated with MCP at a concentration of 1 microL L(-)(1) for 12 h at 20 degrees C. For all varieties stored at 0 degrees C, ethylene production and respiration rates were reduced for several months following MCP treatment, and firmness and titratable acidity of treated fruit were higher compared to controls. Apples treated with MCP did not develop superficial scald or peel greasiness through 6 months storage plus ripening at 20 degrees C for 7 days. Core flush was not observed in MCP-treated fruit until 6 months after treatment when the incidence was still lower compared to control fruit. MCP delayed the rise in production of alpha-farnesene and reduced accumulation of its oxidation products.

[Effect of scald on gene transcription and content of endothelin-1 in supraoptic nucleus of rat hypothalamus].

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) gene transcription and endothelin-1-immunoreactivity (ET-1-ir) in the supraoptic nucleus (SON) of rat hypothalamus were respectively observed by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry after scald. Intensity of ET-1 mRNA and endothelin-1-immunoreactivity (ET-1-ir) was quantified by image analysis. Compared with the control (sham scald) group, no significant change in the intensity of ET-1 mRNA positive hybridization signals in SON was found 15 min post-scald, while there was a 35.1% increase in the positive hybridization signal intensity 60 min post-scald (P<0.05) and a 62.4% increase 180 min post-scald (P<0.01). The content of ET-1-ir in SON decreased significantly to 8.5% of the control 15 min post-scald (P<0.01), and gradually recovered to 31.5% and 52.4% of the control 60 min and 180 min post-scald respectively, though still significantly lower than the control (P<0.01). Pre- and post-scald ET-1 gene transcription in rat hypothalamus was also measured by Northern blot hybridization. No significant difference in the quantity of ET-1 mRNA was found between 15 min post-scald data and those of the control. The quantity increased to a significantly higher level 60 min post-scald (P<0.05) and further increased to 2.5 creased to 2.5 fold of the control 180 min post-scald (P<0.05). In addition, the Northern blot hybridization showed that the post-scald size of ET-1 mRNA remained unchanged despite of the increase in quantity. In view of the neuroendocrine role of SON, the changes in ET-1 mRNA and ET-1-ir in SON resulting from scald suggest that ET-1 may play an important role in neuroendocrine reactions following scald.

Scalds in children caused by water from electrical kettles: effect of prevention through information.

Electrical kettles (el-kettles) were virtually unknown in Danish households in the mid-1980s, but have since become more common. In 1996, (65 per cent of all Danish households had an el-kettle. As the number of el-kettles have increased, so have the number of scalds caused by water from toppled el-kettles. The first patient with an el-kettle scald was admitted to the Burns Centre at Hvidovre hospital in 1988. From 1988 to 1993 29 patients were admitted with this type of scald; 15 patients in 1993 alone. All the patients were toddlers 5-30 months of age. When el-kettle scalds were compared to scalds caused by other mechanisms in children under 5 years of age, it was found that the former occurred to younger children than the latter (60 per cent of el-kettle scalded children were less than 1 year of age compared to 28 per cent scalded by other means), the scalds were more extensive (median of TBSA were 13 per cent and 6 per cent, respectively), and the scalds were deeper (53 per cent and 24 per cent, respectively, needed skin-grafting). In 1993 campaigns were started to inform parents that the cord of the el-kettle should be short and not hang over the edge of the table. In the following years a considerable decrease in the number of el-kettle scalds was found. When the number of expected el-kettle scalds was estimated from the number of Danish households having an el-kettle, it was found that more than half the expected number of el-kettle scalds were avoided.

Subcutaneous temperature profile, skin appearance, and picking efficiency of immersion and spray scalded broiler carcasses.

To compare immersion and spray scalding temperature profiles, thermocouples were positioned beneath the skin of broiler carcasses in eight separate locations. The locations were as follows: 1 and 2) the upper left and right breast, 3 and 4) middle of the left and right thigh, 5 and 6) beneath the left and right wing, 7) the lower back above the pygostyle, and 8) the upper back between the wings. Standard immersion scalding at 52 or 56.5 C for 2 min or a prototype spray scalder at 60, 65, or 70 C for 1 min were used to monitor s.c. temperature during scalding. Immersion scalding resulted in an exponential profile with the lower temperature having less temperature deviation for the monitored locations. Among sampling locations, the spray scald temperatures were divergent among locations and the highest temperatures were recorded when thermocouples were within the spray patterns. As with the immersion scalded carcasses, lower temperatures for the spray scalding demonstrated less deviation among the monitored locations and a closer grouping of the final temperatures. The only spray scald temperature tested at which s.c. temperatures approached those of the immersion scalded carcasses was 70 C. Additional carcasses were scalded, picked, and examined for skin appearance and picking efficiency. All carcasses spray scalded for 60 s had a "cooked appearance" when evaluated. When spray scald times were reduced to 30 s, skin appearance improved, but with the exception of the 70 C trial, picking efficiency was poorer.

Acute microcirculatory changes after scalding of the rat paw.

A scalding model in the anaesthetized rat was used to measure acute circulatory reactions after heat exposure. Local blood flow of both hindpaws was recorded simultaneously and continuously by laser Doppler flowmetry before, during and for 2 hours following scalding. The scalding injury was inflicted by dipping the right hindpaw into hot water at 60 degrees C for 20 s. Concomitantly, the mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) was displayed on a chart recorder. MAP was obtained by cannulation of the common carotid artery. Oedema formation was calculated by measuring the volume changes of the hindpaws in a plethysmometer before and 30, 60 and 120 min after scalding. Scalding was followed by a biphasic increase of cutaneous circulation. During the first minute after heat provocation, an immediate increase in blood perfusion of about 400% was recorded, followed by a slow decrease of circulation. At 30 min after scalding, there was a secondary phase of increased microcirculation of approximately 230%. A slow decline of cutaneous circulation then followed, and after about 60 min the value was stabilized at approximately 100% above pre-burn level throughout the observation time. Almost no change of perfusion was observed on the contralateral unscalded paw. The scalding injury was followed by a progressive oedema formation on the scalded paw, measured by a volume increase of approximately 72% during the observation period, whereas the non-scalded paw showed no change. MAP remained at a stable level throughout the experiment except for a short-lasting transient increase of approximately 10% at the same time as the first peak of blood perfusion. We could thus confirm that scalding in the present model is accompanied by an immediate and marked increase in the peripheral circulation of the scalded paw followed by a later propagation of oedema, and that these inflammatory changes do not appear to be related to central haemodynamic alterations.

[The influence of recombinant human growth hormone on the apoptosis and intestinal mucosal structure in severely scalded rats].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) on the apoptosis and intestinal mucosal structure in severely scalded rats. METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups, i.e. control, scalding and rhGH groups. The rats in scalding and rhGH groups were inflicted with 25% TBSA III degree scalding on the back and immediately followed by intraperitoneal injection of dexamethasone (80 mg/kg). The scalded rats were administered with normal saline and rhGH (1.33 IU.kg(-1).d(-1)) since 2 postburn hours (PBHs), respectively in the last two groups. The changes of the apoptosis rate, the intestinal mucosal proliferative index (PI) and epithelial ultrastructure and the intestinal mucosal pathomorphology of the distal end of ileal mucosal tissue were observed on 30 and 96 PBHs. RESULTS: The intestinal mucosa morphology and epithelia in scalding group were severely injured but were significantly ameliorated by rhGH to near those in control group. The PI in rhGH and scalding groups at 30 PBHs was evidently higher that that in control group (P < 0.05 - 0.01). But the PI exhibited no obvious difference between scalding and rhGH groups. While the PI in rhGH group at 96 PBHs was obviously higher than that in both scalding and control groups (P < 0.01). The intestinal mucosal epithelial apoptotic rate in scalding group was significantly higher than that in control group (P < 0.01), while that in rhGH group was evidently lower than that in scalding and control groups (P < 0.05 - 0.01). CONCLUSION: rhGH could promote postburn intestinal mucosa epithelial proliferation in slow - action manner and inhibit intestinal mucosal epithelial apoptosis with rapid and obvious effects. As a result, the intestinal mucosal epithelial injury could be ameliorated by rhGH by means of its inhibiting roles and the normal morphological structure of intestinal mucosa was maintained ad hoc.

[Influence of scald and lipopolysaccharide on gastrointestinal motility].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal motility dysfunction as a result of scald and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge in guinea pigs. METHODS: Thirty guinea pigs were enrolled in the study and were randomly divided into 3 groups:i. e. control (n = 10, with intraperitoneal injection of isotonic saline), scald (n = 10, with 30% TBSA deep partial thickness burn) and LPS (n = 10, with intraperitoneal injection of LPS) groups. Thirty minutes after treatment, all animals were gavaged with carbolic ink. The propelled distance of the ink within the gastrointestinal tract was measured. The intestinal tissue was harvested and homogenized, and the contents of CGRP, Na+-K+-ATP enzyme, Mg2+-ATP enzyme, Ca2+-ATP enzyme, Ca2+-Mg2+-ATP enzyme were determined, and the delta phim of haustra coli smooth muscular cell mitochondria was assessed. RESULTS: The propelled distance of the ink in the gastrointestinal tract in scald (53 +/- 9 cm) and LPS (91 +/- 10 cm) groups was obviously shorter than that in control group (142 +/- 11 cm, P < 0.01). Furthermore, the distance in scald group was shorter than that in LPS group (P < 0.01). The CGRP content in scald and LPS groups [52.0 +/- 39.0 microg/L and 20.0 +/- 23.0 microg/L] was obviously higher than that in control group (0.8 +/-2.0 microg/L, P <0.05 or 0.01), especially in scald group ( P < 0.05). The Na+-K+-ATP enzyme, Mg2+-ATP enzyme, Ca2+-ATP enzyme, Ca2+-Mg2+-ATP enzyme and the delta phim in scald and LPS groups were remarkably lower than those in control group (P <0.005), but there was no difference between scald and LPS groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The gastrointestinal motility of guinea pigs could obviously be inhibited by scald and LPS, especially by scald. LPS might be the key factor to produce change in the membrane potential of mitochondria of intestinal smooth muscle after severe scald.

Peroxidase activity and superficial scald development in apple fruit.

The relationship between soluble peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7; POX) activity and the development of a chilling-related disorder, superficial scald, was studied in three apple fruit (Malus x domestica Borkh.) systems: a White Angel x Rome Beauty population with progeny with different scald susceptibilities; Delicious from three harvests with progressively declining scald susceptibility; and the scald-resistant Idared and the scald-susceptible Law Rome. Differences in incidence and severity of scald in progeny from White Angel x Rome Beauty progeny tended to show relationships with POX activity at harvest, but, overall, associations were not consistent. However, greater scald incidence and lower POX activity were found in less mature Delicious fruit than in later harvested fruit. Also, the scald-resistant Iotadared had a much higher POX activity compared with the scald-susceptible Law Rome. A general hypothesis that POX activity is related to scald susceptibility was generally supported, but exceptions were observed.

[The relationship between intestinal bifidobacteria and bacteria/endotoxin translocation in scalded rats].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential role of intestinal bifidobacteria in the pathogenesis of gut-origin bacteria/endotoxin translocation in scalded rats. METHODS: Wistar rats inflicted with 30% III degree scalding on the back were employed as the model with the rats undergoing sham injury as the control. The intestinal bacteria/endotoxin translocation and the changes in cecal mucosal microflora were determined by routine methods. And the plasma IL-6 concentration was measured with ELISA. RESULTS: The incident of bacterial translocation into internal organs increased markedly in scalded rats (P = 0.001). The plasma LPS levels on 1, 3 and 5 postburn days (PBDs) in scalded rat group were much higher than those in sham injury group. The number of bifidobacteria decreased sharply 20 - 250 fold, the fungi increased 5 - 60 fold and E. coli increased 0.5 - 30 fold in the caecal mucosal microflora in the scalding group. The ratio of bifidobacteria to E. coli in the scalding group (4 - 800:1) was much lower than that in the sham injury group (25000:1). Furthermore, the plasma IL-6 level increased evidently in the scalding group. It was indicated by further analysis that compared with the rats without bacterial translocation, the bifidobacteria decreased 120 fold, the fungal number increased 50 fold and the E. coli number increased 30 fold in the scalded rats. The bifidobacterial number in the caecal mucosal microflora was negatively correlated with the plasma concentrations of IL-6 and LPS (P < 0.01) in the scalding rat group, and the plasma concentration of IL-6 was significantly and positively correlated with that of LPS. CONCLUSION: Severe scalding injury could lead to an the imbalance of intestinal microflora and the increased intestinal translocation of bacteria and LPS. The decrease of the ratio and number of bifidobacteria in the caecal mucosal microflora might be a contribute to the occurrence of postburn intestinal bacteria/endotoxin translocation.

[Establishment of rat model of scalding with high pressure steam].

OBJECTIVE: To establish a rat model of scalding with controllable depth and area by high pressure steam. METHODS: High pressure steam apparatus consisting of an autoclave and a self-made scalding frame was employed in the study. The rats were inflicted with scalding with 0.12 Mpa (1 Mpa = 7500 mmHg) high pressure steam on the back through a hole of 2.6 cm in diameter for 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 seconds, with five wounds at each time point. The tissue samples were harvested at 24 post injury hour (PIH) for pathomorphological examination. The depth of scald was measured, and injury to the sweat gland and hair follicles injury, the hair growth in scalded area, and the wound healing condition were observed with Photoshop software. RESULTS: There was positive correlation between the scalding depth and scalding time. The injury time for superficial and deep partial thickness burn and full thickness burn were 3, 5 and 7 seconds respectively. The wound healing time was similar even the scalding became more and more serious when injury time increased from 7 to 10 seconds. CONCLUSION: The scalding depth and area in this model could be controlled, and the degree of scald injury could be graded accurately with easy manipulation. The result showed that it was an ideal model of skin burn wound.

[Influence of pinacidil on the myocardial mitochondrial structure and the respiratory function in scalded rats].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of pinacidil preconditioning on the protection of the structure and respiratory function of injured myocardial mitochondria in scalded rats. METHODS: Seventy-five healthy Wistar rats, weighed 250 approximately 300 g, were randomly divided into three groups: i.e. control (n = 9, with intraperitoneal injection of 50 microg/kg isotonic saline), scald (n = 33, with 30% TBSA full thickness scald) and pre-conditioning (n = 33, with same extent of scald injury after intraperitoneal injection of 50 microg/kg pinacidil) groups. Mitochondrial ultrastructure was observed by transmission electron microscope. The mitochondrial respiratory function, the MDA content and the superoxide anion level were determined with corresponding methods. RESULTS: The degree of injury to rat myocardial mitochondria in pre-conditioning group was less intensive than that in scald group (P < 0.05 or 0.01). The respiratory control rate in pre-conditioning group was obviously higher than that in scald group (P < 0.05), and the contents of MDA and superoxide anion in pre-conditioning group were markedly lower than those in scald group (P < 0.05 or 0.01), as evidenced by their contents at 3 post scalding hours (0.60 +/- 0.09 micromol/g and 0.127 +/- 0.020) were obviously lower than those in scald group (0.83 +/- 0.07 micromol/g and 0.169 +/- 0.015) (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Pinacidil preconditioning was beneficial in the protection of myocardial mitochondria in scalded rats, and it might be related to the pre-opening of potassium channel which was sensitive to mitochondrial ATP.

Relationship of superficial scald development and alpha-farnesene oxidation to reactions of diphenylamine and diphenylamine derivatives in Cv. Granny Smith apple peel.

Cv. Granny Smith apple fruit, treated at harvest with aqueous emulsions containing diphenylamine (DPA) and DPA derivatives, were evaluated for the peel disorder superficial scald (scald) after 6 months of cold storage at 1 degrees C plus 0 or 7 days at 20 degrees C. Metabolism of these derivatives and alpha-farnesene oxidation were also evaluated after 6 months. Derivatives substituted at the para position prevented scald, but scald developed on fruit treated with derivatives substituted in the amino, ortho, or meta positions. The extent of scald control was also dependent on the chemical nature of the functional group used to derivatize DPA. Hydroxylation of DPA and DPA derivatives during storage was not associated with scald control. Methoxylated DPA derivatives produced during storage resulted from O-methylation of C-hydroxylated derivatives rather than C-methoxylation of DPA. N-Nitrosodiphenylamine provided partial scald control, possibly resulting from its degradation to DPA, indicating that the amino hydrogen of DPA may be crucial for scald control. Results suggest that functional group position and chemical properties both contribute to the efficacy of DPA derivatives for scald control.

Effect of superficial scald suppression by diphenylamine application on volatile evolution by stored Cortland apple fruit.

Cortland apple fruit (Malus x domestica Borkh.) stored for 120-140 days in air at 0 degrees C were warmed to 22 degrees C and held for 8 days. A portion of the fruit was dipped in a solution of diphenylamine (DPA) at harvest to prevent scald development. Scald occurred only in those fruit not treated with DPA, and its development was accelerated after transfer to 22 degrees C. Ester production from apple fruit tended to increase from day 0 to day 6 of poststorage holding and declined thereafter in both treatments. However, ester production in scald-developing fruit was reduced by approximately 50%. The reduction in volatile production remained relatively constant during the rapid development of scald symptoms. Furthermore, the reduction in volatile production appeared to be independent of respiration and ethylene production. Production of esters derived from hexanol was most reduced in fruit developing scald, with hexyl 2-methylbutanoate production being reduced approximately 15-fold. Interestingly, the production of methyl butanoate was detected only in scalding fruit. alpha-Farnesene production in fruit developing scald was reduced 43% compared with DPA-treated fruit. In contrast, the primary volatile oxidation product of alpha-farnesene, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (MHO), was present only in fruit developing scald. The data suggest that inhibition of ester production may occur as a result of the physiological changes associated with susceptibility to, rather than expression of, scald symptoms.

Feather release force in minimally scalded broilers stunned with carbon dioxide or electricity.

Broilers were stunned with carbon dioxide or electricity prior to slaughter to evaluate feather release force (FRF) following scalding with conventional or abbreviated scald methods. Broilers (n = 72) were stunned using an electrical saline stunner (35 mA, 60 Hz AC, 7 s) or shackle-line CO2 gas stunning tunnel (15 to 40% CO2 gradient for 90 s). After bleeding for 90 s, the broilers were then scalded with a soft scald (53 C for 120 s) or a softer scald (53 C for 90 s). Within 2 min after scalding, feathers from the right femoral feather tract were removed perpendicularly using a force gauge to evaluate FRF. The FRF for the soft scald was higher than that for the softer scald. The FRF results indicated that there were no significant differences between the two stunning treatments (CO2 and electrical) for either scalding treatment.

[Effect of insulin intensive treatment on hyper-proteolysis of skeletal muscle in scalded rabbit with sepsis].

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of insulin intensive treatment on hyper-proteolysis of skeletal muscle in scalded rabbit with sepsis. METHODS: Male white rabbits were randomly divided into scald group (S group), scald sepsis group (SS group), scald with insulin treatment group (SI group), scald sepsis with insulin treatment group (SSI group), and control group (C group), with 6 animals in each group. The extent of scald injury was 30% total body surface area (TBSA) III degree in depth, and the model of scald sepsis was replicated by administration of endotoxin (2 mg/kg) into the peritoneal cavity immediately after scald injury. Insulin intensive treatment was given with injection of insulin to keep the plasma glucose level in physiologic range (4.4-6.1 mmol/L) for SI group and SSI group. The contents of 3-methylhistidine (3-MH) in extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles and urine were determined with high performance liquid chromatography. The expressions of ubiquitin mRNA in the EDL muscle were assessed with Northern blot analysis. RESULTS: The contents of 3-MH in EDL muscles and urine of S group and SS group were increased significantly as compared with C group (all P<0.01), and that of SI group and SSI group were decreased markedly compared with S group and SS group (all P<0.01), respectively. The mRNA expression of ubiquitin of S group and SS group was enhanced significantly compared with C group (all P<0.01), and that of SI group and SSI group was down-regulated notably compared with S group and SS group (all P<0.01), respectively. CONCLUSION: The activity of ubiquitin system, one of important protein degradation pathways, and the proteolysis in skeletal muscle are enhanced after scald injury, especially so sepsis sets in, and insulin intensive treatment can effectively alleviate hyper-proteolysis of skeletal muscle through inhibiting the activity of ubiquitin system at gene level.

Effects of the antiprotease ulinastatin on mortality and oxidant injury in scalded rats.

BACKGROUND: Proteolysis and oxidant injury are important mechanisms of injury in thermal burns. The glycoprotein ulinastatin has antiprotease and free radical-scavenging properties and therefore could be useful in the treatment of these injuries. OBJECTIVE: To determine the free radical-scavenging effects of ulinastatin on rats with thermal injury. DESIGN: An experimental study. MATERIALS AND INTERVENTIONS: Sixteen rats with a 70% surface area immersion scald were treated intravenously for 3 hours; immediately after injury, the rats were treated with ulinastatin, 100,000 U/kg, in lactated Ringer's injection. Sixteen control rats were also scalded but were given only lactated Ringer's injection. Sixteen additional sham control rats were immersed in 37 degrees C water and given ulinastatin. MEASUREMENTS: Levels of malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, lactate, and pyruvate in skin, along with the water content of the skin, were measured before injury and at intervals thereafter in six rats from each group. RESULTS: The mortality rate was 50% at 72 hours and 90% at 14 days in scalded control rats, but it was 0% at 72 hours and 20% at 14 days in the treated rats (P < .01). Levels of malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase in the skin and the lactate-pyruvate ratio all remained at the same values (as those before scalding) in treated rats but rose in the skin of scalded control rats (P < .05 for each). The water content of scalded skin gradually increased after injury in all groups, but at 3 hours, the scalded skin in treated rats contained less water than that in scalded control rats (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Ulinastatin may have a therapeutic role in treating thermal injuries.
