Our objective is to analyze the sphere of political and social autonomy of patients in order to evaluate their situation within the framework of alienation. The authors thus study conditions in which patients perceive their status.
This study investigated the relationships between the relatively mild manifestations in verbal behavior of social alienation and disorganized thinking in normal subjects and cerebral glucose metabolic rates measured by positron emission tomography (PET). Three groups of 10 young normal male subjects were injected with D-[18F]deoxyglucose (FDG) during either wakefulness, rapid eye movement (REM), or non-REM (NONREM) sleep, and 32 to 45 minutes later they were asked to report their thoughts, emotions, or dreams and free-associations to these mental events. Nonparametric correlations were obtained between measures of interpersonal social alienation, intrapsychic conflicts, and thought disorder derived from the typescripts of these reports by content analysis--using the Gottschalk-Gleser Social Alienation-Personal Disorganization Scale--and regional cerebral glucose metabolic rates obtained from PET scans. Total social alienation-personal disorganization scores obtained from the reports of wakeful, silent mentations showed significant positive correlations with glucose metabolic rates in the left temporal lobe. The patterns of significant correlations involving these verbal behavior measures derived from the content analysis of verbal reports of dreams or other mental events occurring during REM and non-REM sleep were in different cerebral locations from those found with these variables during silent, waking mentation. Previous observations suggesting that increased left temporal lobe glucose may typify chronic schizophrenia may instead be indicative of a wide range of thought disorder and/or social alienation manifestations occurring, at times transiently and minimally, in normal people.
Level of acculturation has been linked to depressed mood in studies across culturally diverse immigrant groups. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of acculturation, social alienation, personal and family stress, and demographic characteristics on depressed mood in midlife immigrant women from the former Soviet Union. Structural equation modeling showed that higher acculturation scores, measured by English language and American behavior, were indirectly related to lower scores for depressed mood. Higher acculturation levels promoted mental health indirectly by reducing social alienation and, subsequently, lowering family and personal stress, both of which had direct relationships to symptoms of depression. These findings support the ecological framework that guided our research and point to the importance of focusing on contextual factors in developing interventions for new immigrants.
For 127 adolescent boys and 149 girls, correlations of subjective ratings for "physical appeal" and "good-looking" with scores on Dean's Alienation Scale and an 18-item self-survey, showed self-judgments, but not objective judgments, of appearance were associated with some forms of social alienation, especially over-all alienation and powerlessness.

Women raising children alone after divorce often find their new socio-psychological world frightening and unmanageable. Perceiving this, their young sons may undertake a counterphobic defense of themselves and their mothers, manifested as antisocial behavior. Clinical experience outlined in this paper suggests that both mother and son can benefit quickly and dramatically from family interventions focused on recognizing and utilizing aggression.

Investigated the relationship between trait anxiety and MMPI PD scores among psychiatric inpatients from a multidimensional standpoint by means of the Harris PD subscales. The trait anxiety scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Harris PD subscales were administered to 24 female and 21 male psychiatric inpatients. Trait anxiety was correlated positively with the basic PD scale in accord with previous findings. However, the Self-Alienation and Social Alienation PD subscales were the only Harris subscales that were correlated significantly with anxiety in the positive direction. The Social Imperturbability PD subscale was related inversely to trait anxiety. The findings were discussed primarily in terms of the potential benefit of employing the Harris subscales in studies of psychopathy and in clinical settings.
Two studies assessing the validity of the Psychological Screening Inventory (PSI; Lanyon, 1970) as a screening inventory for adolescent inpatients are reported. Results were mixed. Significant differences in mean scores between adolescent normals and inpatients were found on three scales of the PSI (Alienation, Social Nonconformity, and Discomfort); however, no significant differences in mean scores on any of the five scales were found between hospital referrals deemed appropriate for hospitalization and referrals deemed inappropriate for hospitalization. Further, five alternative rules for using the PSI as a psychiatric screening instrument for referrals were tested. Hit rates using these rules were unacceptable.

Two groups of adolescents seeking psychotherapy (N = 91 and N = 198) and a normative group (N = 112) provided 5-minute verbal behavior protocols which were content analyzed for social alienation-personal disorganization (SA-PD). The data supported the hypothesis that adolescents applying for help in 1974 to 1975 showed greater pathology than those seen in 1972 to 1973. The normative adolescents were significantly healthier than either of the two Adolescent Clinic groups. In the clinic samples, older adolescents were more disturbed than those in the younger ranges. The SA-PD scale is a useful addition to tools available for the assessment of emotional states of adolescents. The data support the idea that there appears to be an increasing severity in the problems presented by adolescents in very recent years.
Seeman in 1959 suggested that alienation is a multidimensional concept. Using two aspects of Seeman's concept of alienation, powerlessness and social alienation, and two concepts derived from Lachar's 1978 Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Cookbook, emotional and self-alienation, the present work was undertaken to ascertain which concept will more likely predict feelings of alienation. A stepwise multiple regression showed that among 160 Nigerian (Igbo) subjects the feeling of powerlessness predicted alienation more than did the other concept.
