This study was conducted to evaluate atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropyl-1,3,5-triazine) and alachlor (2-chloro-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide) dissipation and movement to shallow aquifers across the Northern Sand Plains region of the United States. Sites were located at Minnesota on a Zimmerman fine sand, North Dakota on Hecla sandy loam, South Dakota on a Brandt silty clay loam, and Wisconsin on a Sparta sand. Herbicide concentrations were determined in soil samples taken to 90 cm four times during the growing season and water samples taken from the top one m of aquifer at least once every three months. Herbicides were detected to a depth of 30 cm in Sparta sand and 90 cm in all other soils. Some aquifer samples from each site contained atrazine with the highest concentration in the aquifer beneath the Sparta sand (1.28 microg L(-1)). Alachlor was detected only once in the aquifer at the SD site. The time to 50% atrazine dissipation (DT50) in the top 15 cm of soil averaged about 21 d in Sparta and Zimmerman sands and more than 45 d for Brandt and Hecla soils. Atrazine DT50 was correlated positively with % clay and organic carbon (OC), and negatively with % fine sand. Alachlor DT50 ranged from 12 to 32 d for Zimmerman and Brandt soils, respectively, and was correlated negatively with % clay and OC and positively with % sand.
The COMBI-I trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02967692) evaluating spartalizumab plus dabrafenib and trametinib (sparta-DabTram, n = 267) versus placebo plus dabrafenib and trametinib (placebo-DabTram, n = 265) for BRAF V600-mutant unresectable or metastatic melanoma failed to reach its primary end point of progression-free survival at 24 months. This final analysis reports overall survival (OS) during at least 5 years of extended follow-up. At the end of the trial (August 21, 2024), the median duration of follow-up was 76.9 months (range, 73.7-83.3 months). The median OS was 61.5 months (95% CI, 41.6 to not evaluable) for the sparta-DabTram arm and 41.6 months (95% CI, 30.6 to 56.9) for the placebo-DabTram arm (hazard ratio, 0.760 [95% CI, 0.598 to 0.966]). The safety findings were consistent with the known safety profile for sparta-DabTram. The most common treatment-related adverse event (TRAE) was pyrexia (65.9% v 46.2%, respectively, in the two study arms). Grade ≥3 TRAEs were reported in 57.3% and 36.7% of patients in the two arms, respectively. The combination of sparta-DabTram appears to improve OS compared with dabrafenib and trametinib alone in patients with BRAF V600-mutant metastatic melanoma.
Serum gastrin levels were determined in 21 male runners aged 21-57 years old before and after an ultra marathon (Spartathlon, Athens-Sparta, 248 km). 13 participants (group B) arrived to Sparta after a continuous run of 24-35 hours, while 8 stopped after 95-151 km (group A). The stress associated with such a strenuous run has resulted a 35% decrease of gastrin in group A and a 46% rise in group B. Gastrin levels (post-race) of group B were 56% lower than those of group A. The regulatory mechanisms of serum gastrin levels and the physiological adaptations related to such an exhaustive exercise are discussed.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the self-esteem of school-age children with leukemia in a clinic setting and to compare it to the self-esteem of healthy children. Thirteen chronically ill children, 6 to 11 years old, who were patients at a midwestern clinic and children's hospital, and 50 school-age children without chronic illness participated in the study. Children were administered the Kinetic Family Drawing-Revised (Spinetta, McLaren, Fox, & Sparta, 1981) to measure their self-image in relation to their family. Children's self-esteem was measured by the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI) (Coopersmith, 1981). The results indicated that children with leukemia did not differ in self-esteem from healthy children except on one subscale of the SEI. However, children with and without leukemia did differ on components of the self-image measure, a dimension of self-esteem. Implications of the findings are discussed.
There is a growing awareness among health care professionals that the psychosocial needs of siblings of children with cancer are less adequately met than those of other family members. As part of a larger research study of 17 families of children with cancer, 20 healthy siblings, ages 3-11 years (7 males, 13 females), were tested using the Kinetic Family Drawing-Revised (Spinetta, McLaren, Fox, & Sparta, 1981) in one of two oncology clinics in a Southwestern state. Nine of the subjects participated in a sibling day. Data from the drawings and discussions with siblings confirm previous sibling research findings and reflect current social changes.
The examinations have involved 89 children with bilateral congenital cataracts aged 2-6 months (n = 68) and 7-10 months (n = 21). The preoperative examinations have been carried out under anesthesia and included biomicroscopy, retinoscopy, ultrasonic and electrophysiologic examinations. A number of specific clinical and functional features have been revealed in these babies. Surgery has been performed in 148 eyes. Various types of microsurgical techniques of the closed type have been employed: aspiration-irrigation method; operations with ultrasonic equipment y3X-phi-p04-0 and Sparta, lensectomy using the Okutom system. An anterior approach to the lens via an incision in the limbus has been used. Good optical and functional results have been achieved. No grave intraoperative complications have been recorded. The postoperative period has been areactive in 84.5% of cases. In 6% of cases secondary cataracts have developed, mostly of Elschnig's pearls. Early surgery (at the age of 2-6 mos) is indicated in all forms of congenital cataracts inducing deprivation amblyopia.
History and Psychiatry are two different disciplines, but very often psychiaters have, for the sake of their discipline, used historical elements; and the reverse is true. The most frequent approach is to look into history in order to understand Psychiatry, the reverse being unusual. Few examples of psychiaters or historians approaching psychiatry in order to understand history can be provided: Sparta, Luther and Nazism. Some of these historians and psychiaters have studied still more limited phenomenons and in this field, we must say that the Schreber's case, as well as the education of D. G. Schreber, has been the most studied case. We think that these studies mostly carried up by psychiaters or psychologists, have left aside something essential: the part of D. G. Schreber in the German national revival. There has been an exaggeration of his part of pedagogue and above all an exaggeration of the causalities between all this, nazism and the 20th century. Therefore, what we are trying to do by studying the education of D. G. Schreber as well as the psychosis of D. P. Schreber is an attempt of clarification, an attempt that will take into account the period in which they lived.
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a genetic disorder of amino acid metabolism that is associated with brain catecholamine depletion and deficient myelination. Although neuropsychological deficits have been documented in children with early-treated PKU (ETPKU), no study to date has examined possible effects of impaired myelination in this population. In the present study, interhemispheric transfer time was assessed for 14 children with ETPKU, 22 children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, and 48 normal children, using a manual reaction time paradigm previously validated with callosal agenesis patients (Milner, 1982). Children with ETPKU demonstrated slowed interhemispheric transfer from the left to the right hemisphere as compared with the two other groups. The magnitude of slowing was correlated with age and phenylalanine levels at birth. Results support the hypothesis that abnormal myelination disrupts the development of interhemispheric connections in ETPKU, and suggest that left hemisphere projections may be particularly susceptible to such disruption.
AIMS: This study asks if repeated Pavlovian pairings of a sipper tube (conditioned stimulus, CS) with food (unconditioned stimulus, US) will induce Pavlovian autoshaping conditioned responses (CRs), consisting of drinking of either 6% ethanol or water from the sipper CS. This study also tests predictions derived from the autoshaping model by asking if sipper CS-directed drinking will be retained, despite the absence of training for several weeks, and, in addition, if drinking rate is a negative function of sipper CS duration. METHODS: Autoshaping procedures, conducted in two daily sessions, consisted of the brief insertion of the sipper tube CS followed by the response-independent presentation of food US. For the Ethanol group (n = 8), the sipper CS contained 6% ethanol, whereas for the Water group (n = 8), the sipper CS contained tap water. Saccharin fading procedures were employed, whereas for both groups, during days 1-19, the sipper CS contained 0.1% saccharin, and thereafter across training days the concentration of saccharin was gradually reduced (0.07, 0.035, 0.0%). Following elimination of saccharin, both groups were maintained in their home cages during a 27-day retention interval, and then re-evaluated for autoshaping of drinking of unsweetened ethanol and water. Thereafter, across days, the duration of access to the sipper CS (5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 15.0 s) during each autoshaping trial was increased. RESULTS: Both groups increased drinking across the first 19 days of training with sipper CS-food US pairings, and, at 0.0% saccharin, the Ethanol group consumed 14.76 ml of 6% ethanol per day, resulting in a daily ethanol consumption of 2.77 g/kg. For both groups, daily levels of drinking before and after the 27-day retention interval were comparable, attesting to the durability of the acquired drinking effects. At each CS duration, the Ethanol group consumed more millilitres of fluid per day than did the Water group, and for the Ethanol group, peak drinking of 24.0 ml of 6% ethanol per day was observed at the 10 s CS duration. For both groups, drinking rate (millilitres of fluid consumed per second of CS duration), was a declining monotonic function of CS duration, resulting in a daily ethanol consumption of approximately 4.2 g/kg for the Ethanol group. CONCLUSIONS: These data reveal that these sipper CS-food US autoshaping procedures induce drinking in rats that is durable and negatively related to increasing CS duration. The effects of both variables are consistent with the hypothesis that drinking from the sipper CS is a Pavlovian autoshaping CR. Autoshaping of drinking in the Water group is observed despite the absence of water deprivation, and even more fluid is consumed by the Ethanol group than by the Water group. The high volumes of ethanol consumed during brief daily sessions suggest that Pavlovian autoshaping procedures may provide an animal learning model of binge drinking.
This case report is about two patients with two different types of ICDs who underwent electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) therapy. In one patient with an ICD that has epicardial screw-in bipolar sensing leads, electromagnetic interference (EMI) from the EMS device caused the delivery of an inappropriate ICD discharge. In a second patient with an ICD with endocardial true bipolar sensing, there was no evidence of EMI during the EMS therapy despite all of our attempts to reproduce it. The sensing circuits in the two different ICDs are compared.

Polyneuropathy caused by n-hexane contained in glues was, until recently, the typical occupational disease of shoemakers. Glues no longer contain large concentrations of this solvent, and in some cases, it as been completely replaced by other hydrocarbons. The authors investigated the health status in a group of shoemakers using glues containing 35% technical heptane. The same glue, not containing n-hexane, was used by a shoemaker who worked at home; she developed an otherwise unexplainable peripheral polyneuropathy. For each of the 16 subjects, the following procedures were carried out: environmental sampling, biological monitoring for Mek and heptane metabolites, a neurological and electromyographic examination. No neurological abnormalities were found in the workers that could be attributable to occupational exposure, probably due to the low level environmental contamination (< 100 mg/m3 n-heptane) found in the 7 factories and workshops studied where acceptable hygiene conditions existed. The time course and ratio of urinary metabolites of heptane were also studied, the latter showing a predominance of 2- and 3- heptanol in the initial phase and 2-5 heptandione at the end of the work week; probably, the presence of other solvents, such as Mek, can modify the ratio of metabolites and consequently the formation of neurotoxic compounds could result.
Fifteen cases of ulnar nerve neuropathy at cubital tunnel level were observed in women aged between 16 and 37 years employed in shoe factories. The women operated column sewing machines resting their elbows on the work table. Past evidence showed that the interval between the beginning of work and onset of neuropathy was generally more than one year but less than that for similar diseases observed in other jobs where arthritis of the elbow played a more important role and the average age was higher. It can therefore be supposed that arthritis in these shoes workers was of less significance, whereas local trauma, which was not prevented by the use of small soft cushions under the elbows (4 out of the 15 subjects had been using them for some time), seemed of greater importance. A period of less than one year (in one case only a few days) was deemed due to the presence of a pre-existing neuropathy of the elbow which had so far been asymptomatic. Cases treated within six months of onset showed marked improvement. However, rapidly worsening symptoms, independent of the degree of damage reached, often led to early treatment with favourable outcome in a short time, while slow and insidious onset brought a longer prognosis. The primary prevention suggested is to instruct workers as to the correct work posture, i.e., avoiding resting the elbows on the work table. As a secondary preventive measure, bearing in mind the need of early diagnosis and treatment, medical check-ups every six months are proposed.
