Two genetically enhanced isolates of the Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcMNPV) expressing insect-specific neurotoxin genes from the spiders Diguetia canities and Tegenaria agrestis were evaluated for their commercial potential. Since prevention of feeding damage is of primary importance in assessing agronomic efficacy, a method for estimating the median time to cessation of feeding (FT50) was developed. Neonate droplet feeding assays with preoccluded virus samples were conducted to compare the FT50s and median survival times (ST50s) of larvae infected by the toxin-expressing recombinant viruses with those of larvae infected by wild-type AcMNPV and the appropriate polyhedrin-minus control viruses. Low dosages were used to minimize the effect of dosage on the response times, and the time to molting of noninfected larvae was used to audit variability among batches of larvae within and between tests. Appropriate statistics are discussed. To evaluate host spectrum, response times were compared in three lepidopteran insect pests, Trichoplusia ni Hubner, Spodoptera exigua (Hubner), and Heliothis virescens (Fabricius). The recombinant viruses expressing insect-specific toxin genes from T. agrestis and D. canities, designated vAcTalTX-1 and vAcDTX9.2, respectively, significantly reduced both FT50 and ST50 in all three lepidopteran pests. Reductions in feeding times compared to the wild-type virus ranged from 16 to 39% with vAcTalTX-1 and 30 to 40% with vAcDTX9.2. Reductions in survi val time were lower, ranging from 18 to 33% with vAcTalTX-1 and 9 to 24% with vAcDTX9.2. While vAcTalTX-1 tended to kill faster than vAcDTX9.2, vAcDTX9.2 stopped feeding faster than vAcTalTX-1, suggesting that it would be more effective in reducing crop damage.
The mode of pathological reaction of the skeletal muscle fibres to injury is now well understood as a result of the large number of experimental studies and the wide variety of techniques applied to the problem, as recounted above. The most notable aspect of the reaction of the injured muscle fibre is the remarkable stereotyped character of the resulting changes as demonstrated by many diverse agents producing surprisingly similar results. The initial lesion is essentially local coagulative necrosis of the muscle fibre. If the animal survies, such necrosis is inevitably followed by a series of biological reactions inherent in muscle and which lead to the removal of dbris and the proliferation of myoblasts...
Pocket mice are facultative homoiotherms with the ability to drop their metabolic rate dramatically while at rest or in response to environmental stresses. Under these conditions, they characteristically enter a state of prolonged torpor. These animals require no drinking water and they can live in darkness for many months without apparent ill effect. They tolerate a wide range of ambient temperature, ralative humidity, and oxygen pressure and have survied without food for a mean of 14 d at an ambient temperature of 20 degrees C (68 degrees F). Studies carried out on the pocket mouse colony used for the Apollo XVII flight revealed, in the animals tested, no serological evidence of viral disease, no pathogenic enterobacteria or respiratory Mycoplasma on culture, a 25% incidence of sarcosporidiosis, and a 2% incidence of chronic meningitis or meningoencephalitis. The conclusion reached is that the pocket mouse is a highly adaptive animal and very well suited for space flight.
48 patients with heart failure were supported by intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP) from 1985 to 1993. The disease included rheumatic (39 patients), congenital (7) and coronary hearts (2). The average time of supporting with IABP was 27 hours, 23 patients (48%) survied inclading 19 patients with postoperative lower cardiac output syndrome. Hemodynamics was improved. IABP increased cardiac output syndrome, and hemodynamics was improved. IABP increased cardiac output (50%), cardiac index (60%), stroke volume (50%), stroke volume index (60%) and decreased left atrial pressure or pulmonary wedge pressure. The mortality was 25 patients (52%). The death causes were as follows: arrhythmia (4), renal failure (6), lung failure (2), DIC (1), and the other (12). The main complication of IABP was lower limb ischemia particularly in surgical cut-down method to establish IABP. The analysis indicated that the temporary pacing maker with IABP could prevent some arrhythmia such as frequent premature ventricular beats. Lower limb ischemia and renal failure should receive much attention because they are easy to be confused with shock symptom when IABP.
Two hundred and forty one patients with previous bleeding from esophageal varices caused by liver cirrhosis were treated with fiberoptic endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS). The result was desirable. 217 patients were followed. The mean follow-up time was 63. 15 months. The median time was 58 months. Rebleeding rate was 15.21% (33 cases). The total 5-year survival rate was 59%; patients with Child A, B and C were 65% and 35%, respectively. The mortality rate was 10. 60% (23 cases), among them 12 were caused by rebleeding. EIS is an effective method for preventing from rebleeding. Multiple and periodic injections reduce rebleeding rate. EIS increase the 5-year survi al rate by reducing rebleeding rate.

The prognostic significance of homologous recombination repair gene (HRRg) mutations across the different metastatic prostate cancer stages remains unclear. This retrospective real-world study analyzed 162 metastatic castration-sensitive (mCSPC) and 126 castration-resistant (mCRPC) patients from the ProGène database, stratified by HRRg mutational status. Mutation prevalence was similar in both groups (16.0% in mCSPC vs. 13.5% in mCRPC). HRR-positive mCSPC patients had significantly shorter median overall survival (OS) (24.0months; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 16.0-41.0) compared to HRR-negative patients (45.0months; 95% CI: 34.0-69.0; P=0.04). Notably, BRCA2-mutated patients exhibited a reduced median OS of 24.0months (95% CI: 9.0-40.0; P=0.036) and a faster progression-free survival compared to HRR-negative patients (median PFS=8.0months; 95% CI: 0.0-14.0 vs. 17.0months; 95% CI: 12.0-20.0; P=0.006). These findings suggest that HRRg mutations - especially BRCA2 - are associated with worse prognosis in mCSPC, supporting the value of early genomic screening to guide personalized treatment strategies.
