[Relationship between Eysencks personality types and intellectual performance].

This study tests Eysenck's psychophysiological hypotheses concerning the relationship between intellectual performance and personality type. The data originated from two partial samples with N = 314. The personality types were distinguished with the ENNR-Questionnaire. The intellectual performance was tested using items which are based on Jäger's factor analytic studies. 23 differentially complex items stemed from the main intelligence factors, and separate measures for speed and quality were used to test the hypotheses. The results of all analyses of variancy falsify Eysenck's hypotheses. The "neurotic introverts" showed the worst results in both quality and speed by most of the items, independent of complexity and intelligence factor (chi-square-test of positional frequency). The "stable" and "neurotic extraverts" showed the best results.

Field tests of a permeation-type personal monitor for vinyl chloride.

A passive dosimeter-type personal monitor for vinyl chloride has undergone extensive field testing. Collaborative studies by a number of laboratories confirm the accuracy, reliability, convenience and general acceptability of personal monitors utilizing gas permeation for sample collection and quantification. Data are generated as timeweighted averages and response is linear from 5 ppb to 50 ppm. The monitors which weigh only 35 g are unaffected by variations in environmental conditions.

Empirically derived personality types among male and female college students.

Data on the 16 PF obtained from 130 male and female college students were cluster analyzed to produce an empirical personality typology. Two different clustering algorithms were compared. Seven personality types emerged: 1) Well-Adjusted Conservative, 2) Ego-Involved Neurotic, 3) Norm Independent, 4) Socially-Detached Neurotic, 5) Superego Controlled, 6) Self-Assured Experimenter, and 7) Tough-Minded Controlled. Not only did the types differ significantly in personality, but they also were found to be significantly different on nine different measures of interpersonal orientation. Since the types did give intuitive insight into the nature of personality as particular combinations of personality traits and also were different on variables other than those used for the classification, the scientific utility of the typological approach received support.

EMG biofeedback applicability for differing personality types.

Divided thirty-two male alcoholics into two groups on the basis of their MMPI profile. Group 1 consisted of Ss determined to be tense and anxious, while Group 2 included a more heterogeneous sample of personality types. Eight Ss from each group received 14 days of progressive relaxation training and EMG biofeedback; the remainder received control sessions of taped music and EMG monitoring. Group 1 experimental S achieved greater levels of relaxation than either their matched controls or Group 2 Ss. POMS scores revealed a significant difference over time for all Ss in the direction of improved mood states. No significant between-groups difference was found. Generally, these results suggest the following: (1) patients may be selected credibly for relaxation-biofeedback treatment by use of the MMPI; (2) patients who exhibit significant anxiety and tension may achieve lower levels of tension during training than patients with lower levels of pretreatment anxiety.

The WISC as a measure of personality types.

This present analysis attempted to provide evidence for the utility of the WISCto identify a specific group of individuals. Incarcerated juvenile offenders in the 70/79 IQ range were separated according to race and sex and their differential WISC patterns studied. Results focused on the efficiency of each of Wechsler's hypotheses for the adolescent sociopath. Post-hoc analysis provided tentative additional signs by which to identify juvenile offenders in the 70/79 IQ range. Consistencies between results of the present analysis and previous studies were noted. The clear pattern that emerged strongly supports the potential of the WISC as a measure of personality types.

Personality and conditioning: factors of classical CR acquisition and extinction and their relationship to personality types.

A number of psychophysiological, cognitive and personality measures, and classical appetitive and aversive SR acquisition and extinction rates were taken from a sample of 25 male undergraduate volunteers. Principal Components Analysis of the data revealed general acquisition and extinction factors which were indexed by the psychophysiological variables. Regression analyses showed additionally that Eysenck's E-I dimension predicts both acquisition and extinction rates, and that imagery may be an important mediational variable in CR acquisition.

A comparison of personality types among female student health professionals.

The purpose of the study reported here was to focus on the personality traits of six groups of women students in medicine, pharmacy, medical technology, physical therapy, dietetics, and occupational therapy. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was administered to all groups to measure Extroversion-Introversion, Sensing-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, and Judging-Perception. Results show that (a) medical students in contrast to the other five groups are guided more by thinking than feelings in their approach to work and people and (b) pharmacy students prefer well-planned, routine work in contrast to occupational therapy students who like changing situations and flexibility. Some implications of these findings for the health team are mentioned.

Sex offenders: three personality types.

Analyzed by a Q-type factor analysis MMPI profiles of 92 sex offenders institutionalized for psychiatric evaluation, which yielded three basic MMPI profile types. Altogether 88 of the 92 Ss coult be categorized into one of three types characterized by profile peaks on F,Sc; Pd,MA; or D,PD. Analysis of background information, social history items, nature of present crime, primary diagnosis, and ward observations revealed significant differences among the types. Of particular interest was the finding that the primary diagnosis for 85% of the "F,Sc" MMPI type was "no mental disorder" in spite of the fact that this group showed significantly more disturbed behavior on the ward (anxiety, depression, suspicion, and manic excitement) and had uniquely degraded their victims. The fact that two-thirds of these persons who had F scores greater than or equal to 80 and 50% denied the crime may have inadvertently affected diagnostic decisions.

Inhibitory ease--a personality type?

Measures of reactive, transmarginal and internal inhibition, inhibitory strength, extraversion (E) and neuroticism (N) were obtained from a sample of 25 Ss. A Principal Components analysis of the data disclosed factors which were identified tentatively as extinctive/reactive inhibition, transmarginal inhibition, and appetitive and aversive inhibitory strength. N loaded the transmarginal inhibition factor, and I(Introversion) the appetitive inhibitory strength factor. It is suggested that the role of E in appetitive CR extinction may be a function of the extent to which inhibitory strength is involved in inhibitory dynamism.

Psychosexual aspects of the panic-fear personality types in asthma.

Numerous earlier studies have demonstrated the close relationship between MMPI Panic-Fear categories and various medical outcome measures in asthma. The present study relates MMPI Panic-Fear categories to psychosexual development. Specifically, High Panic-Fear patients demonstrate oral preoccupations, Low Panic-Fear patients demonstrate anal preoccupations, while Moderate Panic-Fear patients do not demonstrate pre-Oedipal preoccupations. Thus, MMPI Panic-Fear categories, useful in predicting medical outcome measures, have now been related to developmental levels, with the explanatory power of developmental concepts as well as their implications for psychological treatment.

Adrenal-medullary and adrenal-cortical responses to understimulation and overstimulation: comparison between type A and type B persons.

Male and female university students, classified as Type A and Type B persons with the aid of a questionnaire measuring coronary-prone behavior, were studied while doing mental work under laboratory conditions, characterized by understimulation and overstimulation, and while unoccupied (baseline session). The urinary excretion of adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol, heart rate (in the understimulation and baseline conditions) and self-reports were used as indices of arousal. The overall picture showed that both experimental conditions increased arousal, the rise being particularly pronounced for cortisol excretion during understimulation and for adrenaline excretion during overstimulation. Comparison between groups showed that cortisol excretion was higher in Type A than in Type B persons of both sexes during understimulation. Adrenaline excretion was about the same in both sexes (Type A and Type B) during understimulation, but was higher in males than in females during overstimulation. There were no group differences in performance.

Type A personality and extent of coronary atherosclerosis.

The relation between type A personality and the extent of coronary artery disease was studied in 109 patients who underwent selective coronary angiography. Type A personality as measured with the Jenkins Activity Survey was not correlated with the extent of coronary artery disease as assessed from the number of vessels with 50 percent or greater narrowing of diameter.
