Marine sterols. IX. Occurrence of 24 xi-methylcholestane-1 beta, 3 beta, 5 alpha, 6 beta, 25-pentol 25-monoacetate in the soft coral, Sarcophyton glaucum.

The southern Japan's soft coral, Sarcophyton glaucum, was found to contain several polyhydroxylates steroids. One of the minor components was isolated and its structure was established as 24 xi-methylcholestane-1 beta, 3 beta, 5 alpha, 6 beta, 25-pentol 25-monoacetate from spectral evidence and from comparison with a reference compound, 5 alpha-spirostan-1 beta, 3 beta, 5 alpha, 6 beta-tetrol, which was synthesized from ruscogenin. A mixture of 1 beta, 3 beta, 5 alpha, 6 beta-tetra hydroxy C27- and C28-sterols was also isolated.

Endosymbiosis and cellular tolerance in the Hawaiian soft coral Sarcothelia edmondsoni verrill.

The relationship between the soft coral Sarcothelia edmondsoni Verrill and its symbiotic algae is considered as an early instance of cellular tolerance which can be disturbed by a variety of adverse conditions. The algal cells lie in vesicles deep within the endodermal cells of the host and are not subject to digestion. Their expulsion appears to be a reverse translocation to the distal end of the host cell and escape by a form of reversed phagocytosis resembling secretion. The cellular mechanisms involved are not clear.

Marine sterols. VIII. Isolation and structure of sarcosterol, a new sterol with a delta17(20)-double bond from the soft coral Sarcophyton glaucum.

The sterol mixture of the southern Japan's soft coral, Sarcophyton glaucum, was found to contain 11 sterols including a novel sterol, 23,24 xi-dimethylcholesta-5,22-dien-3 beta-ol and a new diunsaturated C29 sterol. 22,23-Dihydrobrassicasterol and gorgosterol were the major components in free- and esterified sterols respectively. Brassicasterol was found in S. glaucum, in contrast to the ubiquity of 24-epibrassicasterol in the marine invertebrates in the northern districts. The new sterol (sarcosterol) was isolated; its structure as 23 xi, 24 xi-dimethylcholesta-5, 17(20)-trans-dien-3 beta-ol was based on spectra evidence and comparison with cholesta-5, 17(20)-trans-dien-3 beta-ol.

Effects of palytoxin on the electrical activity of dog and rabbit heart.

Reversible effects of palytoxin, extracted from colonies of the soft coral Palythoa caribaeorum, are described. There is a decrease of both membrane resting potential and overshoot during activity. Rise time of the action potential is prolonged, while repolarization is shortened. The electrical events resemble those seen with metabolic poisons.

Symbiotic interactions and climate change implications of the octocoral microbiome.

Octocorals are vital components of tropical, temperate, and cold-water benthic marine ecosystems. Their associated microbiomes, comprising microeukaryotes, prokaryotes, and viruses, are increasingly recognised as central to host health, nutrient cycling, and chemical defence. Metagenomics and amplicon sequencing have uncovered taxonomic and functional complexity within these microbial communities, revealing patterns of host specificity and health status, along with seasonality and geographic structuring. However, anthropogenic stressors, particularly those associated with global climate change, exert intense pressure on coral-dominated ecosystems, leading to complex and poorly understood local and regional patterns of octocoral expansion and mortality. Microbial interactions may be a main driver of these contrasting outcomes by mediating the ecological resilience of octocorals to environmental stress. We synthesise the current state of research on the diversity, organisation, and function of the octocoral microbiome, and identify critical knowledge gaps on octocoral holobionts relative to scleractinian corals. Our meta-analysis of 79 publicly available bacterial genomes from octocorals reveals group-specific specialisation in denitrification and nitrate assimilation, along with widespread capacities for essential amino acid, cofactor, and vitamin production, suggesting important contributions to nutrient cycling in the holobiont. While sampling efforts between cultured and uncultured lineages are even, our genomic survey reveals strong sampling bias toward the Atlantic Ocean, temperate gorgonians, and healthy host states, whereas bacterial genomes representing the pathobiome, tropical and/or deep-sea regions, and other octocoral taxa remain underrepresented. Accordingly, we propose future research directions to advance understanding of octocoral microbiome ecology and its role in the resilience of tropical, temperate and cold-water coral reefs.
