Three patients with laryngeal chondrosarcoma were observed at the ENT Department of Padua University from 1966 to 1983. Including the present observations, about 150 of these neoplasms have been described in the literature. The male to female ratio was 3:1, and the age at diagnosis ranged from 33 to 91 years (median, 66 years). The rate of metastasis was 8 per cent, and histologically positive lymph nodes developed in only five patients. Surgery is the treatment of choice for laryngeal chondrosarcoma. Radical neck dissection does not appear to be indicated, unless results of clinical examination suggest metastatic lymph nodal involvement.
Various growth phases of Moloney murine sarcoma virus (M-MSV) induced tumors in suckling and young adult BALB/c mice have been studied by light and electron microscopy. In the early phase (3-6 days following M-MSV), observations at the injection site of the thigh muscles consisted of endo- and perimysial edema "activated" muscle satellite, cells, endothelial cells and fibroblasts, scattered type C virus particles within the muscle fibers, muscle fibers and endomysial cells undergoing necrosis and macrophage and granulocyte infiltration. During the overt tumor phase (6-12 days following M-MSV), observation of neoplastic tissue disclosed proliferation of several cell type (endothelial, periosteal, fibroblasts, etc.), poorly differentiated myoblasts along with atypical rhabdomyoblast-like cells and sarcolytes, type C virus budding from muscle fiber and myoblast plasma membrane, and intense degenerative and regenerative changes in the muscle fibers together with more profuse granulocyte infiltration. The regressive phase (13-21 days following M-MSV) presented reduced cellularity of the neoplastic tissue, a decrease in blast cells, diminishing granulocyte infiltration with contemporaneous appearance of prominent lymphocyte foci and gradual disappearance of virus particles. Although many cell types of mesenchymal origin proliferate following M-MSV infection, the above morphological findings indicate that striated muscle is a preferential site for virus replication and transformation. Furthermore, the peculiar virus cell relationships leading to cell lysis and continuous recruitment of newly infected cells have been widely documented. In the light of these findings it is suggested that, besides the host immune control of virus spread and tumor cell multiplication, the non clonal growth pattern of M-MSV induced tumors is a crucial factor in determining the spontaneous regression which occurs with high frequency in this experimental system.
AIMS: The aims of this study were 1) to investigate the mRNA pattern of CD44 variants in three primary (MIA PaCa 2, PANC-1, PSN-1) and two metastatic (CAPAN-1, SUIT-2) pancreatic cancer (PC) cell lines; 2) to ascertain whether the genetic transfer of CD44s and CD44v10 modifies the adhesion of PC cells to the extracellular matrix (ECM) in vitro and their metastatic behavior in vivo. METHODS: CD44 mRNA analysis was done by means of RT-PCR. Adhesion to ECM the was assessed using coated microtiter plates. For the study of CD44v10 insertion in the CAPAN-1 line, liposome-mediated DNA transfer was used. SCID mice were employed for in vivo experiments. RESULTS: CD44v10 mRNA was not expressed by the CAPAN-1 nor by four of the six SUIT-2-derived clones. The stable expression of CD44v10 by modified CAPAN-1 significantly enhanced fibronectin adhesion. Mice without either liver or pancreatic metastases were more frequently found among the animals injected with modified (CD44v10 expressing) than with non-modified CAPAN-1. CONCLUSIONS: 1) It is possible to differentiate between metastatic and non-metastatic PC cells on the basis of CD44v10 expression; 2) CD44v10 seems to be involved in mediating fibronectin adhesion in vitro and in counteracting metastases in vivo.

The authors report the results of a two years monitoring program focused on patients at risk of and with bedsores in the general hospital of Castelfranco Veneto. The purpose of the multidisciplinary exercise (which saw the participation of nurses, pharmacists, doctors) was the activation and the evaluation of treatment protocols. The overall recruited sample included 679 patients, with a prevalence of 61% of lesions at the occasion of the first observation, and of 57% in the last one. The hardly quantitatively different prevalence is better understood from a qualitative point of view: the number of lesions per patients drops slightly from 1.9 to 1.7; one out of four of the "at risk" patients became "at no risk"; a 30% improvement is observed with respect to treatment efficacy. It is suggested that a positive effect may be obtained through a sustained attention to the problem and the careful definition of the interventions to be planned.

Fourteen patients with diffuse tumors of the liver were treated with temporary occlusion of the hepatic artery (HA) by an external tourniquet followed by infusion and systemic chemotherapy. Three patients had primary neoplasms (one hepatocarcinoma and two cholangiocarcinomas) and eleven had metastatic disease (nine from carcinoma of the colon and rectum, one from retroperitoneal liposarcoma, and one from pulmonary small cell cancer). Infusion chemotherapy in all patients was based on 5-FU, Mitomycin and Vincristine. Systemic chemotherapy was FIVB in metastatic carcinoma and Adriamycin in primary liver tumors. All patients showed improvement of the performance status according to the Karnofsky Index. Objective response (OR) was present in 54% of cases. At present, median survival time in 12.5 months. Aggressive treatment combining hepatic ischemia with infusion and systemic polychemotherapy seems to provide an effective method of palliation in diffuse tumors of the liver. Delayed occlusion by an external tourniquet appears safer than intraoperative ligation of the HA.
The Authors examined the histological structure of the midpalatal suture in seven individuals: two of the cases were foetuses, the others were children at the age of one day to two years. In the embryos and in the newborn children the suture was observed to be rather large and straight, while its width decreased with age. Moreover, no change in direction was observed, and the osteoblasts decreased in number.
Eight cases of early gastric cancer (EGC) (histological diagnosis on the resected specimens) were detected Type III (excavated; seven out of eight cases). In three endoscopies. They constituted 3.3% of the gastric cancers observed (239 cases). The most frequent type of EGC was Type III (excavated: seven out of eight cases). In three patients the diagnosis was made only at a second examination, since the first had been negative for malignancy; at the follow-up examination in these cases, the lesion seemed to have healed. The operation was therefore carried out only on the basis of the histological interpretation of endoscopic biopsies.
