Bone tumors of the foot: epidemiology and diagnosis.

The authors reviewed 260 cases of bone tumors localized in the foot and treated at the Tumor Center of the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute: 191 were benign and 58 malignant and 11 metastasis. There was predilection for the hindfoot (57%), followed by the forefoot (33%) (prevalently the metatarsals). Localizations in the midfoot were rare (10%). Osteoid osteoma was observed in 26% of all of the tumors of the foot and in 35% of the benign forms. Among malignant neoplasms Ewing's sarcoma (27.5%) was the most frequent. Conservative surgery, which was always carried out in benign tumors, was also performed in some of the malignant ones, having an early diagnosis and a correct preoperative study. The indications and the limits of the different imaging techniques available are reported (bone scan, arteriography, CAT, MRI), and the role of biopsy in the definitive diagnosis of these neoplasms in discussed.

Adult

Supracondylar process of the humerus: four cases.

Four cases of supracondylar process of the humerus are presented. Two of the patients were asymptomatic and in one of these the supracondylar process was fractured. In a third there was median nerve compression and in the last there was ulnar nerve entrapment. The anatomical features, clinical symptoms and therapy are described. Good results were obtained after resection of the supracondylar process; neurological symptoms regressed one month after surgery.

Fucose-carrying nuclear glycoproteins: distribution and tissue specificity.

Glycoproteins recognized by Ulex europaeus lectin I, specific for fucose residues, have been identified in chromatin prepared from pig liver, heart and kidney nuclei. They are present among the proteins dissociated from DNA with salt solutions and, in higher amount, among the proteins dissociated with urea and guanidine. In any case these fucose-containing glycoproteins appear to have a marked tissue specificity, which suggests that they have specific regulatory roles in the processes taking place in the nuclei.

Chondrosarcoma of the hand and foot.

Among possible localizations of chondrosarcoma of the limbs, the hand and foot represent the rarest sites. Five-hundred six cases of chondrosarcoma have been observed at the Tumor Center of the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute. Of these, 4 were localized in the hand and 10 in the foot. The authors compared their cases with those reported in the international literature. The authors emphasize the particular aspects of the tumor when localized in these sites which may be responsible for late diagnosis and difficulty in differential diagnosis involving synovial chondromatosis and, above all, chondroma, from which chondrosarcoma may originate.

Adult

3'-5' cAMP phosphodiesterase in pig liver nuclei.

cAMP phosphodiesterase was partially purified from pig liver nuclei and some of its properties were investigated. The enzyme is a low km PDE. Inhibition by xanthine derivatives is in line with the behaviour of PDE from other mammalian sources, while small differences are observed towards nucleotides inhibitors. The enzyme is a chromatin-bound protein although no specific location related to transcriptional function could be demonstrated.

3',5'-Cyclic-AMP Phosphodiesterases

Glycoprotein distribution in non-histone chromatin proteins from pig liver.

Carbohydrate content of non-histone proteins from pig liver chromatin has been measured in different groups of chromatin fractions and does not seem to be related to the affinity of the proteins for DNA. Glycoproteins are preferentially located in the nuclease-sensitive fractions of chromatin. A 59,000 dalton glycoprotein has been identified as a characteristic components of a chromatin fraction solubilized by DNAase II.
