Several cases of hemophiliacs with AIDS have been reported. These case reports have prompted studies of asymptomatic healthy hemophiliacs. During these studies, we found four hemophiliacs who presented a distinct clinical syndrome identical to the lymphadenopathy syndrome in homosexuals which has been considered a prodrome to AIDS. Our results demonstrated that the AIDS related complex in hemophiliacs is characterized by recurrent herpes viral infections. Furthermore, the clinical and laboratory data in these patients suggest that this syndrome does not inexorably lead to AIDS, and may be a manifestation of a group of disorders in which AIDS represents one end of the spectrum.

A study was undertaken to investigate the effect of a citrus beverage on tooth erosion and predisposition to caries in hamster molars, and to determine if a supplement of 1.9 ppm fluoride to the beverage influences these systems. Results suggest that enamel erosion is a predisposing factor. The addition of physiological fluoride protects the enamel from erosion and caries.
The CEA family consists of two structurally and functionally distinct sub-groups; the group including CEA, NCA and CGM-6 which are cell surface-bound by phosphatidyl-inositol (PI) linkages, and the group of BGP splice variants which have trans-membrane and cytoplasmic domains. Although all CEA family members mediate intercellular adhesion in vitro, the PI-linked group show Ca++ and temperature independent adhesion whereas the BGP group show rapidly reversible Ca++ and temperature dependent adhesion. From the close alignment in cDNA nucleotide sequences between family members and between repeated domains in one family member, it is apparent that the CEA family is now rapidly evolving; in fact, analogs of only the trans-membrane BGP group have been found so far in the mouse. The addition of a new group of potent adhesion molecules to complex species at some time after the rodent radiation has strong evolutional implications, which are discussed.
The retention of autopolymerized and light-polymerized Delton fissure sealants was compared. Sealants were applied to 207 first permanent molars with 304 separate sites in 73 children 6-8 years old (mean age 6.3 years). After five years, there was complete retention in 59% of the autopolymerized and 48% of the light-polymerized sealants. The resulting 11% difference in retention rates was not statistically significant at P less than 0.05.
The object of this study was to determine the effect of VLC Scotchbond and of an incremental filling technique on microleakage around class II composite restoration in vitro. Four groups of 15-16 teeth each, were filled with the resin P-30 by one of the following techniques: A, Scotchbond and incremental filling; B, Scotchbond and bulk filling; C, Enamel Bond and incremental filling; D, Enamel Bond and bulk filling. The teeth were thermocycled, insulated up to 1 mm from the restorations, immersed in 2 percent basic fuchsin, embedded in acrylic resin and ground off to various depths, parallel to the plane through the vertical and the mesiodistal axes. Marginal leakage was assessed from the degree of dye penetration at the sections. Dye penetration at the occlusal margins was similar for all groups. Dye penetration at the cervical margins for the different groups increased in the sequence: A/C/B/D. Incremental filling resulted in a significantly lower dye penetration at cervical margins for both bonding agents. The differences resulting from the use of Scotchbond were not significant, if the same packing technique had been used. Best results were obtained with Scotchbond and incremental filling.

This study was conducted to determine the success of a conservative cavity preparation using the principle of "sealing for prevention" rather than cavity "extension for prevention". Three hundred and twenty one restorations were placed in 234 teeth of 110 subjects, ages six to fourteen, with a mean age of eight years. After three years, 273 restorations were examined. Caries appeared in ten teeth and sealant wear occurred in sixteen restorations. Complete sealant loss was observed in two restorations and partial loss in thirty-nine, leaving 224 restorations with complete retention of the sealant. These preliminary results demonstrate that conservative cavity preparation with sealing for prevention is a successful technique which conserves valuable tooth structure.
Reticuloendothelial system Fc receptor function was measured in 10 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) taking corticosteroids, 10 SLE patients not receiving corticosteroids and in 19 controls, 9 of whom were corticosteroid-dependent asthmatics and 10 of whom were healthy. Clearance studies were performed using autologous 51 Cr-labeled erythrocytes that had been sensitized with human IgG anti-Rh(D) [6,700 molecules/cell]. The clearance curves could be split into a fast (t1/2 fast) and a slow (t1/2 slow for any of the groups of patients. The results were correlated with serum C3, C4, DNA-binding, fluid phase 125I-Clq binding, a disease activity index, corticosteroid dose and duration of therapy with corticosteroids. The only significant correlation was an inverse correlation of C4 with the t1/2 slow in SLE patients not on corticosteroids (r=- 0.71, p less than 0.05). The t1/2 slow of the 3 SLE patients with active nephritis (86 +/- 40 min) was significantly different from the 17 SLE patients with inactive nephritis or normal renal function (37 +/- 5 min) (P less than 0.05). We conclude that there is no overall defect of Fc receptor function in our patients with SLE although there is decreased clearance in patients with active lupus nephritis.
