[Usefulness of the phototherapy lamp in treating hyperbilirubinemia in newborn infants].

An efficiency of the treatment of jaundice with the lamp for phototherapy in own modification has been discussed. The lamp was used for the treatment of 82 neonates divided into three groups depending on the type of therapy: group I included 43 neonates treated with phototherapy alone; group II--32 neonates treated with phototherapy combined with blood transfusions, and group III--7 neonates treated with exchange blood transfusions alone. A mean time of irradiation in neonates of group I did not differ significantly from that used in group II (combined therapy) and did not depend on the cause of the jaundice. The number of blood transfusions decreased markedly with the use of phototherapy carried out with the lamp in own modification. This lamp proved highly effective in the treatment of the jaundice of various etiology and is the method of choice in case of life-threaten neonates.

[Level of health knowledge in children completing elementary education].

The results are presented of an inquiry study carried out in children in the 8th classes of elementary schools and considerable differences were found in the levels of practical health knowledge related to sex, urban and rural environment. Differences were found also related to the educational level of the parents. A correlation was demonstrated between the health knowledge level and the progress made in school, behaviour in school, and declared level of the child's adaptation to school and domestic environment. The equivocal effect of health knowledge level on the declared health behaviour is discussed.

The ability of granulocytes to engulf latex particles and Staphylococcus aureus in healthy children of parents with atopic asthma.

The test of engulfing of neutral latex particles and Staphylococcus aureus by peripheral blood granulocytes was carried out in 37 healthy children who had at least one parent with asthma and in 14 children, both of whose parents had asthma. A defect of engulfing neutral latex particles and S. aureus by granulocytes was demonstrated in children who had both parents with asthma.

[Knowledge of AIDS among secondary school students].

The paper presents the results of an inquiry examination among teenagers between 17 and 19 years of age. The article discusses sources of information on AIDS used by teenagers and the level of this knowledge. It was found that the knowledge of methods of protection against HIV virus infection during a sexual contact was insufficient. Besides, the authors discussed the feeling of danger resulting from the existence of AIDS and the range of life experience in connection with the disease.

Complex studies of the influence of the working conditions in the Plock Petrochemical Plant on the behaviour of some parameters of cell immunity.

Complex evaluations of the function of peripheral blood granulocytes in the Phenol Plant workers were made. Only precise examinations of the bactericidal and ingestive functions as well as the metabolism of those cells may lead to the discovery of a clinically unnoticeable insufficiency of the system as has been confirmed by other authors and by our own previous studies. Routine methods of separating granulocytes of heparinized peripheral blood were used. Phagocytic activity of cells after contact with three antigens was studied. Bactericidal activity of granulocytes in the presence of Staph. aureus and antibactericidal activity of lysosomal proteins of granulocytes were evaluated. According to the general assessment, no permanent disturbances of the granulocyte function were observed in the phenol plant workers. However, disturbances of the phagocytic and bactericidal abilities were detected in some individual cases. In general evaluation no disturbances of function of granulocytes concerning all some cases phagocytary and bactericidal abilities did not occur simultaneously.

Activity of the reticuloendothelial system in the course of experimental burn disease.

The influence of extensive thermal on selected functions of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) was studied in 35 rabbits of both sexes. Phagocytic activity was evaluated by the method of Malpern et al. and by the isotope method. The results indicate marked prolongation of the depression of phagocytic function of the RES in the course of burn disease. In animals which died early in the course of burn disease, RES activity was depressed throughout the period of observation. In animals which survived burn disease, RES activity underwent periodic changes.

In vitro studies on cellular immunity in mice infected with influenza virus.

Cell mediated immune response in mice infected with influenza A (Scotland) 73 (H3 N2) was studied by defining of the leukocyte migration inhibition, in vitro lymphocyte transformation and phagocytosis of S. aureus 209 P by the peritoneal exudate cells. It was found that the infection induces several changes in the reactivity of lymphoid cells which react with influenza antigens. The macrophage migration-inhibition occurs and it sustains until the 14th day. The mitogenic response to phytohemagglutinin weakens but, in the early period of infection the phagocytosis does not change but on the 14th day it also weakens.
