[Phenotype of peripheral blood lymphocytes in patients with lung cancer].

The expression of surface markers of blood lymphocytes was studied in 32 lung cancer patients. Tumor process involved enhanced expression of the activation markers CD25, CD71 and HLA-DR as well as differentiation antigens CD4, CD8, CD22 and CD16. The expression of the markers was higher than in control, irrespective of stage, localization and histological pattern of tumor. It is suggested that increased expression of surface markers should be accounted for by tumor-induced suppression of the immune system in lung cancer.

[Combined diagnosis of primary lung cancer using immunological tests].

To compare the accuracy of diagnosis obtained with different diagnostic techniques the authors examined 187 patients with cancer of the lung clinically, roentgenologically, bronchologically, morphologically and immunologically. X-ray made the diagnosis of lung cancer in 85% of the examinees. This diagnosis was confirmed in 87% of the cases. Morphological verification was obtained in 84.4% and 78.2% of patients with central and peripheral cancer, respectively. Additional immunological investigations increased the proportion of accurate diagnoses up to 96.8%. It is concluded that immunological investigations are effective in complex diagnosis of lung cancer.

[Activation of blood lymphocytes in lung cancer patients with polyclonal mitogens].

The lymphocyte proliferative response to PHA, Con A and PWM was studied in patients with lung tumors (stage I-IV) and other histological types. Disorders in the mitogen-induced lymphocyte activation were identified in more advanced tumors. Certain peculiarities of lymphocyte proliferative activity were found to be determined by histological pattern and localization. A method of evaluation of blasttransformation consequences with due account of lymphocyte functional activity in cancer patients is suggested.

[Delayed-type hypersensitivity skin test with modified autologous lymphocytes in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with lung cancer].

The delayed-type hypersensitivity skin test was run with autologous modified lymphocytes, treated with phytohemagglunin, in 218 patients suffering different lung diseases. The three following groups were identified: lung cancer, chronic non-specific disease of the lung and benign lesions in the lung. Cancer patients proved positive to autologous modified lumphocytes in 90.4%. Skin reaction was close to normal in the other groups. Skin reaction dynamics was compared in cases of recurrence and recurrence-free patients in the group of surgical treatment for lung cancer.

[Combined treatment of cancer of the stomach using a specific immunotherapy].

Autoinoculation is suggested as an adjuvant means to augment the effect of surgery in gastric cancer which may prevent the development of recurrences and metastases. Surgery alone is not a curative method and 5-year survival in gastric cancer stage III ranges from 9.2 to 28%. The data have been obtained on comparative survival in a control group and a group of inoculated patients. The greatest effect was achieved in patients with poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Further investigation of the two groups adjusted for the patients' age, kind of surgery and morphological structure of the tumor will help to work out precise criteria for inoculation.

[A possible role of phosphoprotein p53 in the mechanism of autostimulation of tumor cell proliferation].

It has been shown that phosphoprotein p53 may participate in the DNA-synthesis stimulation in the mixed culture of tumour cells and syngeneic embryonic mouse cells (10 days of pregnancy). This effect has been eliminated by the preliminary treatment of embryonic cells in vitro by the monoclonal antibodies to p53 (pAb421) in the model system. A conclusion is drawn that p53-epitopes of embryonic cell surface membrane take part in the formation of the determinant which is recognized by receptors of tumour cells. The stimulation of DNA-synthesis in tumour cells is resulted by this process.

[Immunocytochemical detection of antigen associated with squamous cell cancer of the cervix uteri in women].

Cervical preparations from 89 women were studied for antigen associated with squamous-cell cervical cancer (SCCC) by the indirect immunofluorescence method. The antigen was revealed specifically in 77.8% of samples of SCCC (stages Ib, II and III) in 64.3% of samples of cancer (in situ and stage Ia) in 55.5% of samples of displasia (stages II and III) and in 17.2% of samples from tumours of other organs. In samples of 9 healthy women the antigen was not revealed. Thus, the detection of antigen associated with SCCC may be useful in elaboration of adjuvant diagnostic and prognostic tests.

[Nucleolar apparatus function and the ribosomal gene activity of mouse embryonic fibroblasts infected by the SA7(C8) virus].

Computer morphometry revealed statistically significant (P less than 0.001) decrease in the number and area of nucleoli and ribosomal gene activities (as demonstrated by AgNOR staining) in primary mouse embryonal fibroblast cultures infected by oncogenic adenovirus SA7(C8). Even more drastic increased in these parameters was found when serum-depleted cultures were infected. There were no effects on nucleolar and AgNOR parameters in mock-infected cultures. It is suggested that an increase in the ribosomal gene activity may reflect synthesis of SA7(C8) early gene products in target cells.

[Immunomorphological identification of an antigen associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix uteri].

Data on immunomorphological identification of antigen associated with cervical squamous cell carcinoma are presented. Tissue specimens prepared of cervical squamous cell carcinoma, normal cervical tissue and different other human tumours have been stained immunohistochemically for antigen using a polyclonal antiserum. Immunofluorescence staining for tumour-associated antigen was observed in all specimens of cervical squamous cell carcinoma and in 20% of specimens of the normal cervix uteri. The above antigen is a high specific tumour-associated marker and may be useful in the diagnostic studies.

[Mathematical model of the immunostimulation of tumor growth].

A mathematical model of immune system that takes into consideration the subpopulation of suppressor lymphocytes was proposed. The possibility of stable balance in the process of carcinogenesis is shown. The prospects of mathematical formalization of the immune processes are discussed.

[Changes in the biochemical parameters of lymphocyte functional activity in simian adenovirus SA7(C8)-induced carcinogenesis].

A functional defect of lymphocytes in hamsters with tumours during carcinogenesis induced by monkey adenovirus SA7(C8) was found and estimated by means of the blast transformation reaction. An increased activity of transport ATPases, the disturbance of cyclic nucleotide levels (cAMP, cGMP) and a decrease in both basal and Con A-activated calcium transportation were observed simultaneously with changes in the activation of immunocompetent cells under Con A influence.

[A tumor-associated antigen of cervical cancer].

The tumour-associated antigen was identified with the aid of antisera obtained from rabbits immunized with 3 M KCl extract of pool human cervical carcinoma cells. The antigen was found in 92.5% specimens of human cervical squamous cell carcinoma, in 4.7% specimens of other localization of the tumours. The antigen was absent from sets of normal human tissues. The tumour-associated antigen was not identical with CEA, alpha-fetoprotein, SP1, EPA and lactoferrin and it was localized in cytoplasm of cervical carcinoma cells.

[Possible role of embryonic surface antigens in forming the autostimulus of tumor cell proliferation].

It is shown that DNA synthesis intesifies in a mixed culture of cells of the tumours of different histogenesis, induced by monkey adenovirus SA7(C8) and chemical carcinogens, with syngenic and allogenic cells of an early embryo. This intensification of the synthesis in tumour cells is due to the contact of surfaces participating in the cell response but not to the soluble factors because when the embryo cells are placed into the milliporous chamber, the described effect is inhibited.

[T- and B-cell functional activity in the immune response in viral carcinogenesis].

The functional activity of the spleen cells, their ability to produce antibody-forming cells on the model of the adoptive transfer, activity of T-helper-cells and B-precursor-cells of antibody producers in the tumour growth induced by monkey SA7 (C8) adenovirus were studied. The inoculation of the tumourigenic virus to the newborn mice CBA, inhibit antibody formation in the system of adoptive transfer already in the latent period with a sharp inhibition at the terminal stages of carcinogenesis. The helper activity is suppressed earlier than the activity of B-precursors of antibody producers. The obtained data indicate a considerable immunodepressive action of monkey adenovirus SA7 (C8).
