[Alpha-fetoprotein in the liver of embryonic and newborn rats].

The localization of alpha-fetoprotein in the liver of embryos and newborn Wistar rats was determined by the method of fluorescent antibodies. This protein was found in the cytoplasm of some hepatocytes, endothelium of blood vessels and erythroid blood cells of embryos and new born rats. It was never found in the blood-forming and Kupffer cells of the liver, as well as in the epithelium of bile ducts. The hepatocytes containing this protein were located in the liver lobes near the central veins. Their number and the intensity of fluorescence decreased with the age of animals.

[Macrophage migration inhibition by T-cells in rats after overcoming natural tolerance to alpha fetoprotein].

Cellular immunity to alpha-fetoprein (AFP) was studied in rats by the macrophage migration inhibition (MMI) test after breakage of tolerance to homologous AFP of rat (RAFP). A single injection of cross-reacting AFP of mouse (MAFP) has induced the capacity of peritoneal exudate cells of rats to react in the MMI test to both MAFP and RAFP. The second injection of MAFP results in reduction of the MMI reaction to both antigens and the appearance of stimulation in the macrophage migration together with further elevation of antibody titer to MAFP and RAFP. The fractionation of rat peritoneal cells has shown the T-cell nature of MMI reaction to both MAFP and RAFP.

Immunohistochemical study of alpha-fetoprotein and serum albumin in the early postnatal period in mice.

The localization of the embryo-specific protein alpha-fetoprotein (alpha-FP) and serum albumin in the organs of mice in the first three weeks of life was studied. Using a reaction of immunofluorescence, alpha-FP was detected in the cytoplasm of the hepatocytes. During the first three days of life it was contained in the overwhelming majority of the hepatocytes, but in different concentrations. Then the fluorescence intensity and number of cells containing alpha-FP decreased sharply, and by the seventh to 12th day such cells remained chiefly close to the central veins. In a simultaneous determination of alpha-FP and albumin in the liver, cells containing only alpha-FP, alpha-FP and albumin, and only albumin were detected. With increasing age of the animals, the number of the latter cells increased. On slices of other organs, alpha-FP, albumin, and transferrin were present in the same structures of gamma-globulin.

[Distribution of alpha-fetoprotein and albumin in paraffin sections of cells of Zaidel's ascitic hepatoma].

The alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and albumin localization were studied in the cells of rat Zaidel's ascitic hepatoma. It was shown in the paraffine sections of the hepatoma cells fixed by mixture of 96 degrees ethanol with 1% glacial acetic acid that 9.3% of hepatoma cells contained AFP and 0.6% of the cells--serum albumin. Small quantities of the tumour cells had both of these proteins simultaneously. There was no definite regularity in the distribution of the AFP and albumin-containing cells in the tumour islands.
