Concentration of malonic dialdehyde in the cerebrospinal fluid as a measure of the intensity of lipid peroxidation processes in intracranial hypertension in small children.

The authors analyzed the concentration of malonic dialdehyde (MDA) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of children with intracranial hypertension. For the control group an intracranial pressure (ICP) of 250 mm H2O was taken as a reference point. The concentration of MDA was determined by a method using thiobarbituric acid. In a group of children with ICP values greater than the limiting value, the concentration of malonic dialdehyde was 0.629 mmol/mg protein, while in the control group with an ICP below 250 mm H2O, this value was 0.610 mmol/mg protein. The differences between the two groups were not statistically significant. from the results obtained it can be concluded that the concentration of MDA, as an isolated parameter, does not constitute a good measure of intensity of the lipid peroxidation processes in central nervous system (CNS) tissues, taken as an indicator of their disintegration in cases of hydrocephalus with intracranial hypertension.

[Antioxidant enzyme activities in fetal and neonatal lung: lowered activities of these enzymes in children with RDS].

Lung tissue was obtained within 24 h of death from 49 fetuses and neonates (31 weeks gestation to 3 months post term). 24 neonates died from RDS, other neonates died from inherited heart abnormalities. All three antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities increased with gestational age. After term, SOD increased further by 51-60 weeks, while GSPH-Px exhibited a transient increase between 41-50 weeks. Activities of these enzymes in lung of neonates who died after RDS were significantly lower, and the peroxidation processes were significantly higher. These results suggest existence of oxidative stress, i.e. overproduction of oxygen free radicals in lung neonates who died after RDS.

[Effect of fetal and neonatal growth on the occurrence of some diseases in adults].

The findings of many authors show that reduced fetal growth is followed by increased mortality from cardiovascular disease in adult life. They are further evidence that cardiovascular disease originates, among other risk factors, through programming of the bodies structure and metabolism during fetal and early post-natal life. Wrong maternal nutrition may have an important influence on programming.

[Concentration of chromium in blood serum of patients with chronic renal failure].

UNLABELLED: A group of 66 patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) was studied. 42 of them (21 to 63 years old) were treated with haemodialysis and 24 of them (20 to 63 years old) were treated without dialysis. A group of 16 healthy subjects, 19 to 73 years old, were also studied. The blood samples in non-hemodialyzed patients and healthy subjects were taken only once after cannula had been inserted into the antebrachial vein. The blood samples in hemodialyzed patients were withdrawn four times: just before dialysis, during haemodialysis after the first hour of dialysis (from the arterial and from venous line of the dialyser) and after haemodialysis. Chromium concentrations in serum in all examined groups and chromium concentrations in the dialysis fluid as well as in the demineralized water used for dialysis were measured by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. In all patients with CRF serum chromium concentration was significantly higher than in the controls. During haemodialysis a decrease of serum chromium concentration was observed. Significant correlations between chromium concentration and creatinine concentration, haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit value, erythrocytes were observed. CONCLUSIONS: 1. Serum chromium concentration in patients with CRF was significantly higher than in normals. 2. No significant differences were found in serum chromium concentration between subgroups of patients with chronic renal failure. 3. Haemodialysis decreases significantly serum chromium concentration.

[Increased cholesterol content in erythrocyte membranes of patients with chronic renal failure treated with hemodialysis].

The investigate whether the blood rheological disturbances occurring in hemodialyzed patients are related to the erythrocyte lipid composition, cholesterol and phospholipid content was studied of the erythrocyte membrane. The study included 40 patients with chronic renal insufficiency. 34 of them had hypertension and proteinuria. The cholesterol/phospholipid ratio was significantly higher in the patients after hemodialysis (mean 2.48; SD 0.14) compared with the patients before hemodialysis (mean 2.08; SD 0.19). There was a significant increase of cholesterol in subgroup with hypertension and proteinuria. A significant correlation was found between membrane cholesterol/phospholipid ratio and serum levels of LDL-cholesterol.

The total free radical trapping ability of blood plasma in eclampsia.

The interaction between various antioxidants may be important in protecting against oxygen toxicity. We studied the total radical trapping capacity of the antioxidants in plasma (TRAP) and compared the TRAP-level in the patients with eclampsia with that in normal pregnant women. The measured and calculated TRAP-level was higher in the control group than in the group with eclampsia. The uric acid, vitamins E and C and sulfide concentrations were lower in the group of women with eclampsia compared with the controls. The central conclusion from this work is that for patients with eclampsia, the plasma concentrations of the essential nutrients: vitamin E, vitamin C, and cysteinerich protein are too low for optimal antioxidant systems activities.

[Mineral components of the human placenta, birth weight and infant head circumference].

Levels of mineral elements (F, Na, Mg, Al, S, Cl, K, Ca, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Br, Rb, Mo, Cd, J, Ba, Hg and Pb), the role of which is well known and documented, were studied in 365 placentas. The significant negative correlations were ascertained between the content of Pb, Cd, F, Hg and the birth weight; the positive correlations were ascertained between some minerals (Mg, Ca, Co, Cu, Zn, Se) that are indispensable for the proper organism functioning and the fetus development.

[Retinoids--drugs with a strong teratogenic side effect].

The derivatives of the vitamin A--retinoids, are very precious drugs used in dermatology. Forever, they are very strong teratogens and their applications in case of women before the menopause may cause serious deformations of the fetus. So we presented the recommendations so as to applications of the retinoids in such women.

[Association between magnesium, calcium, phosphorous, copper and zinc in plasma and erythrocytes of umbilical cord blood and biometric parameters of newborns].

The correlation between magnesium, calcium, phosphorous, copper, and zinc in umbilical cord plasma and erythrocytes and gestational age, birth height, weight and head circumference were calculated in 52 newborn infants (27 girls, and 25 boys). No infant had a congenital malformation, all pregnancies were uncomplicated, mothers were healthy and had no history of serious diseases. There were no significant sex-related differences at birth among the variables studied. Gestational age was positively correlated with erythrocyte zinc. Birthweight positively correlated with erythrocyte magnesium and zinc. Height of neonate positively correlated with calcium in plasma. Plasma calcium was positively correlated with erythrocyte copper. The most significant regressors accounting for birthweight were erythrocyte zinc followed by plasma zinc. Reference values in umbilical cord plasma and erythrocytes for magnesium, calcium, phosphorous, copper and zinc was also determined.

[Activity of superoxide dismutase in erythrocytes and leukocytes and levels of zinc and copper in blood of patients with diabetes. Effect of diabetic treatment on examined parameters].

UNLABELLED: The purpose of the present work was to assess the relationship of leukocyte and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity to its cofactors concentrations i.e. zinc and copper in plasma and erythrocyte in diabetic patients and treatment variability. 104 patients were included in the study. 23 persons were in the control group. All patients were divided into 2 groups (NIDDM and IDDM). Patients with NIDDM were divided into 3 subgroups depending on treatment (insulin, gliclazide, dietary treated). In all groups, there were assessed following parameters: the leucocyte and erythrocyte SOD activity according to the method of Misra and Fridovich, and zinc and copper concentrations in plasma and erythrocyte, which were measured by flame absorption spectrophotometry. Statistical analysis was performed using the CRISP program. CONCLUSION: 1. The leukocyte and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity is significantly lowered in diabetes mellitus. 2. In diabetic patients both in type I and type II as in the healthy people, there is a close correlation between SOD activity and its cofactors i.e. zinc and copper erythrocyte concentrations. 3. Insulin and gliclazide treatment increases SOD activity and delays late diabetic complications.

[Does multiple use of a cuprophan dialyser influence levels of chromium and cadmium during hemodialysis in patients with chronic kidney failure?].

UNLABELLED: 42 patients between 21 and 63 years of age with chronic renal failure (CRF) treated with haemodialysis and 16 healthy subjects between 19 and 72 years of age were observed. All patients were divided in two groups: 15 patients treated with haemodialysis with cuprophan dialyser used first time and 27 patients treated with haemodialysis with cuprophan dialyser used more than three times. The blood samples in haemodialyzed patients were withdrawn four times: just before dialysis, during haemodialysis (after one hour of dialysis at both ends of the dialyzer) and after haemodialysis. Chromium and cadmium concentration in all examined groups, in dialysis fluid and in demineralized water were measured by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. During haemodialysis a decrease of serum chromium concentration and an increase of serum cadmium concentration in two groups of haemodialyzed patients were observed. No significant differences in serum chromium and cadmium concentration before dialysis, during dialysis and after dialysis were observed between two groups of haemodialyzed patients. CONCLUSION: The multiple use of cuprophan dialser did not influence significantly serum chromium and cadmium concentration in haemodialyzed patients.

[Decreased activity of oxidoreductases in erythrocytes and blood platelets from venous and umbilical blood of women with pregnancy-induced hypertension].

Thirty two pregnancies with pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) and twenty seven control normal pregnancies were analysed with regard to maternal and fetal blood enzymatic antioxidants. In PIH maternal erythrocyte, platelet and serum blood and in umbilical cord blood levels of lipid peroxides were higher than in normal pregnancy. Also the activities of platelet and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase were lower in PIH women. The concentration of lipid peroxides was higher, and the activity of glutathione peroxidase were lower in umbilical cord elements of women with PIH, than corresponding values of women with normal pregnancy. We suggest that disturbances in antioxidant enzymatic system are involved in the pathogenesis of maternal PIH, and it may also have effects on the function of antioxidant status of the fetus.

[Metal content in children from Katowice and Rabka. I. Magnesium in blood and hair].

The authors determined the magnesium content in the blood and hair by atomic mass absorption. The studied material included preschool children from a kindergarten situated in the center of Katowice (n = 60) and their older teenage brothers and sisters (n = 10). The control group was made up to 24 preschool children from Rabka (a health resort in the mountains). It was found that the majority (over 60%) of preschool children in Katowice had a magnesium deficit. The magnesium content in teenagers was significantly higher than in their preschool siblings. Children from Rabka had much more favorable results.

[Level of total plasma carnitine in patients with chronic renal failure in the course of diabetes and other etiologies treated with hemodialysis].

In uraemic patients disturbances in carnitine metabolism are observed. Aim of the study was to assess total carnitine level in haemodialyzed patients and influence of dialyzer type on this level before, during and after haemodialysis (HD). We examined 46 patients divided into 3 groups: I--16 non-diabetic uraemic patients haemodialyzed using polysulfone dialyzer; II--10 diabetic patients haemodialyzed using polysulfone dialyzer, III--20 non-diabetic uraemic patients haemodialyzed with cuprophane dialyzer. Total plasma carnitine level was estimated using colorimetric method according to Wieland et al. Total carnitine level in diabetic haemodialyzed patients was significantly lower comparing to non-diabetic ones but in both groups a significant decrease during HD was present. Dialyzer type had no influence on carnitine elimination.

Evaluation of amniotic fluid elastolytic activity: can it be a method of fetal lung maturity assessment? A comparison with Gluck's L/S test.

Amniotic fluid elastolytic activity was assessed in a group of 120 women who delivered preterm infants and in 35 women who delivered at term. Amniotic fluid elastolytic activity decreases as pregnancy progresses. The lecithin-to-sphingomyelin (L/S) ratio in women's amniotic fluid was determined by the method developed by Gluck and associates [6] and elastolytic activity by that developed by Mehdi and associates. A significant negative correlation was found between the amniotic fluid L/S ratio and amniotic fluid elastolytic activity (r = -0.932; p < 0.001). The border value of elastolytic activity that indicates lung maturity (L/S ratio equal to or greater than 2) is 2.01 +/- 0.05 mmol/min ml. In the amniotic elastolytic activity test, it is the value that differentiates mature from immature lungs. The amniotic fluid elastolytic activity test is characterized by high sensitivity (91.43%) and specificity (91.67%), high positive prognostic value (76.19%) and low negative prognostic value (2.65%). The test parameters do not therefore differ greatly from those of the Gluck test. Moreover, the amniotic fluid elastolytic activity test is cheaper and takes less time to perform.

[Releasing activity of superoxide radicals by neutrophils and monocytes in hemodialyzed patients with chronic renal insufficiency].

Superoxide anion (O2-.) production by neutrophils and monocytes was measured in the peripheral blood of 23 patients hemodialyzed for 14 years. The O2-. production by these cells decreased as the time of hemodialysis advanced. The correlation between O2-. production and peripheral blood smears was also evaluated. Patients with higher neutrophils percentages had lower O2-. production by neutrophils and monocytes. These results indicate that an abnormally increased counts of neutrophils and monocytes in peripheral blood of hemodialyzed patients may depress immunoregulatory function. In addition, decreased O2-. production by these cells should be considered when assessing the defence mechanism and susceptibility to infection of these patients.
