Angioarchitectonics of the venous vessels in the normal human myocardium.

The studies have been conducted on normal hearts using microhistoangiographical method. Angioarchitectonics of venous vascularization of the left and right ventricular walls have been described. The so-called "perforating veins", venous vessels of type I (intramuscular venous plexuses), venous vessels of type II and the Thebesian veins have been distinguished.

Microangioarchitectonics of the myocardial venous vessels in coronary heart disease.

The studies have been conducted on human hearts in the course of acute and chronic coronary insufficiency using microhistoangiographical method. Changes in the angioarchitectonics of the venous vessels in the course of myocardial infarction and also in chronic coronary insufficiency have been described. It was noted that the renovation of the vessels in the organizing infarcts begins from the venous pole with the participation of the intramuscular venous plexuses.

[Studies of the effects of BCG and Corynebacterium parvum vaccines in experimental infection of mice with influenza virus. Foot pad test, splenic indicator and histologic changes in the thymus gland, spleen and lymph nodes].

Evaluation of the influence of BCG and Coparvax on reticulo-endothelial system in mouse was performed. Mice were stimulated i.p. with BCG vaccine and Coparvax vaccine. Spleen index and histological changes in thymus, spleen and lymph nodes were evaluated after 14 days in mice vaccinated with BCG and after 7 days in mice vaccinated with Coparvax. Foot pad test was also performed by giving vaccine into three feet. Tuberculin was injected into mouse foot pad on the day 7th and 14th and a lysate of Coparvax vaccine on the day 7th. Spleen index and foot pad test showed higher values in mice vaccinated with Coparvax than with BCG. Histological changes of thymus, spleen, and lymph nodes showed morphological differences depending on the type of vaccine used. Both preparations were characterized by stimulating effect on reticuloendothelial system, which was much more pronounced after giving Coparvax vaccine.

Experimental evaluation of the net "Dallop" covered with collagen as the dural substitute.

Evaluation of the usefulness of the net "Dallop" produced by Tricomed Lódź covered with collagen to the dural defects reparation was analysed. This new original product of Lódź Technical University was compared with widely used in neurosurgery "Zenoderm" produced by Ethicon and "Duratexol" produced by Czechoslovakia. The trial was conducted on 38 rabbits: 4 as a control group (just an original dura sutured after incision with Mersilk Ethicon sutures), 19 with implanted the net "Dallop" covered with collagen, 11 with the "Zenoderm" and 4 with the "Duratexol". Animals were sacrificed after 3, 14, 30 or 90 days after surgery. There were no significant differences between all analysed groups in clinical, macroscopical and morphological investigations. No negative local reactions in histopathological evaluation of the net "Dallop" covered with collagen were observed. The results of our investigations show that the net "Dallop" covered with collagen seems to be the "Zenoderm" and the "Duratexol" dural substitute.

Ultrastereologic studies on the myocardial mitochondria in experimental hypothyroidism.

Ultrastereologic studies were performed on myocardial mitochondria in experimental hypothyroidism induced by the excision of the thyroid gland. Studies were carried out using accepted methods in stereology according to Weibel et al. Mitochondrial membrane surface areas and relative volumes of individual membranes and compartments were calculated by means of Weibel's grid and square grid. Quantitative studies disclosed that in hypothyrotic animals mitochondrial matrix volume increased, while mitochondrial external compartment volume was reduced, which reflected lowered energy production by mitochondria and its transfer to other subcellular structures of myocardial fibers. The studies allowed to evaluate energy state of mitochondria and enabled to examine the course bioenergetic disturbances within myocardial fibers, the effect of which was progressive heart hypodynamism and failure.

[Lung injuries caused by explosion in rabbits. 2. Pathogenetic mechanisms in lung injury (a hypothesis)].

A hypothesis of the pathogenetic mechanism of the pulmonary changes after the injury is introduced. Basis are the results of the morphologic estimation of the lung traumas by blast with known energy in rabbits. The reason is the lung deformation by the sudden pressure increasing in the thoracic cavity and the volume reduction of the thorax. The deformed lungs were pressed against the thorax wall in the region of the smallest deformation.

[Ultrastructural changes in the myocardium of rats with experimental hypothyroidism].

The dynamics of ultrastructural changes in the heart were studied in the setting of experimental hypothyroidism following surgical removal of the thyroid gland. The studies examined the capillary bed, the connective tissue and the muscle fibers. The initial changes were observed in the per vascular spaces which were distended and filled with a substance of low electron density. These changes were followed by alterations in the endothelium and in the muscle fibers whereby the dynamics of this sequence were related to the degree of mitochondrial injury. Damage to the cardiac musculature parallels the changes observed by other investigators in skeletal muscle. The issue of basophilic degeneration of muscle fibers in hypothyroidism is also discussed.

Ultrastructure of the epithelial cells of the small intestinal villi, the surface epithelium of the large intestinal mucosa and some elements of the intestinal mucosal lamina propria in rats with acute uraemia.

Electron microscopic studies on the dynamics of changes in the epithelial cells and some elements of the intestinal mucosal lamina propria were performed on rats after bilateral high ureter ligation. Simultaneously, they were referred to blood serum biochemical and electrolyte disturbances. The ultrastructural changes indicate that as early as in the initial period of acute uraemia water-electrolyte disturbances become evident, which are still increasing. In the later period cell organelles alter and bacterial infection sets in. Ultrastructural abnormalities of the intestinal mucous membrane are increasing proportionally to biochemical and electrolyte disturbances of the blood serum.

Interindividual phenotypic variations in CLL B lymphocyte maturation indication of different maturation blocks.

Peripheral blood lymphocytes from 8 patients with B-derived chronic lymphocytic leukaemia were stimulated by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria strain Cowan 1 with T cell mitogens PHA or PWM in 5-7 day suspension cultures. For the first group of patients proliferation and maturation tests were performed on T cell enriched and T cell depleted subpopulations, obtained from harvested lymphocytes at the end of cultures by the sheep red cell rosette technique. To re-examine mutual influences of cultivated T and B cells in the second group of experiments, lymphocytes from CLL patients and from 5 healthy individuals were investigated by the use of transmembrane cocultivation system after Feldman and Basten. The proliferative responses to lectin and to bacteria were assessed by 3HTdR-blastic and mitotic indices. The maturation process of B lymphocytes was examined by cytoplasmic Ig, studied by FITC-conjugated antisera. Results obtained with cocultivation system support the view that T cell replacing factor(s) were required for inducing prolonged growth and development of maturation of more numerous B lymphocytes in response to Staphylococcus aureus, a T cell independent, B specific polyclonal stimulator. Results analysed in different patients indicate various degrees of maturation of B cells including their differentiation towards a plasmacytoid cell, accompanied by various proliferative capacities of B and T lymphocytes. This functional analysis reflects the heterogeneity of B-CLL patients group.

Morphology of the microvascular bed in primary human carcinomas of lung. Part II. Morphometric investigations of microvascular bed of lung tumors.

A comparative investigations of peripheral microvascular bed in various histological types of human primary lung carcinomas (squamous cell carcinomas, oat-cell carcinomas, adenocarcinomas and large cell carcinomas) have been performed. The study was performed on 52 cases of lung carcinoma (there were 49 cases from autopsy and 3 cases from surgery) and on 8 normal comparative cases for evaluation of unchanged bronchial mucosa. Tissue blocks were obtained from standardized parts of bronchus and contained the intra- and extrabronchial parts of tumour as well as the bordering bronchial mucosa. The relative capacities of: 1. anaplastic cells, 2. connective tissue in stroma, 3. intraluminal space of blood vessels, 4. degenerative anaplastic cells, 5. necrotic detritus, and 6. haemorrhages and erytrorrhages were estimated in carcinomatous tissue by the hit points method. In bronchial mucosa the capacities of: 1. intraluminal space of blood vessels, and 2. haemorrhages and erythrorrhages were recorded. Furthermore, the structure of peripheral microvascular bed was evaluated by constructing the distributive series of diameters of blood vessels. These distributive series were approximated with the analitical function. It was found that the largest capacity of blood vessels (with an extremely developed capillary segment of vascular bed) is in the intrabronchial part of squamous cell carcinomas. In the extrabronchial part of this type of carcinoma, the capacity of blood vessel is about three-times smaller than in the intrabronchial part (3.36% and 9.26%, respectively). The finest blood vessels of extrabronchial part undergo the most considerable reduction, in comparison with the ones in the intrabronchial part of squamous cell carcinoma. Oat-cell carcinomas show the smallest difference in vascularization of intra- and extrabronchial parts of tumor (4.38% and 3.33%, respectively).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Morphology of the microvascular bed in primary human carcinomas of lung. Part I: Three--dimensional pattern of microvascular network.

Three-dimensional patterns of the microvascular network of four main types of human lung carcinomas (squamous cell carcinoma, oat cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma) have been described. Investigation has been conducted in 18 autopsy cases by x-ray microangiography, and in 52 autopsy and surgical cases by modified benzidine-nitroprusside method for colouring the erythrocyte column in blood vessel. Specimens for the investigation were collected from standardized places of the tumor margin. Eight essential spatial structures of which the carcinomas' microvascular bed is built have been distinguished. Some characteristic features of microvascular network of highly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas, adenocarcinomas and oat cell carcinoma have been described. It has been concluded also that large cell carcinomas, poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas as well as adenocarcinomas do not produce any characteristic and repeated pattern of microvascular bed. One of the main elements of the neoplasm structure influencing the growth rate of the tumor is its peripherial vascular bed. It determines the access of chemotherapeutics, oxygen and components participating in the immunological response also. All of those factors are significant elements while considering the curability.

[Observations on the peripheral vascular network of the myocardium during infarction].

The patterns of microvascular network have been examined in myocardium of 61 patients which died of subendocardial or transmural myocardial infarctions. The microangiographic patterns of interventricular septum and ventricular wall with or without morphological lesions have been compared. The investigations are related to the differences in microvascularization of various morphological types of myocardial infarctions. Our study confirms the classification of myocardial infarcts into microfocal and massive types. It explains the milder clinical course of microfocal subendocardial infarctions.
