Treatment of psoriatic arthropathy with etretinate: a two-year follow-up.

In psoriatic arthropathy the data obtained after two years of etretinate treatment in 20 adult male patients, are reported. The beneficial effects of the drug on the objective symptoms are accompanied by an improvement in the biohumoral parameters evaluated. The dose was 1 mg/kg/day for one month, with subsequent adjustments in relation to the results obtained with a maintenance dose of 25 mg/day, or where possible, 10 mg/day, or on alternate days, for a maximum period of 25 months. The side effects appeared to be of an acceptable degree of severity. The authors consider etretinate one of the drugs of first choice in the treatment of psoriatic arthropathy.

Angiosarcoma of the scalp-face. Report of a case with fulminating course.

A case of scalp-face angiosarcoma with a fulminating 3 months shorter course is reported. The patient died of bilateral pleural bleeding secondary to hemorrhagic lesions of the visceral pleurae. Clinical findings and histopathology are reported and a brief review of the literature is made.

[A program of combined ECG and VCG automatic diagnosis. Note I. The atriogram].

In this paper a new computer aided ECG and VCG data handling is analized. It is based on an optimum estimation of dipole moment, which is used as the main diagnosis parameter. Already known diagnostical methods (available in present literature) are compared with this new technique. The available diagnostical range has been increased widely. The sensitivity of such a program is being analyzed both for normal and abnormal cases.

Association of jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus with pulmonary carcinoma in Sardinian moufflon (Ovis musimon).

Bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma has been described in man and in several animal species, including cattle, dogs, opossums, goats and sheep. In sheep, a bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma, known as ovine pulmonary carcinoma (OPC), is caused by jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV), an exogenous type D retrovirus. In the mid-1980s, a severe outbreak of a disease resembling OPC was described in captive Sardinian moufflon (Ovis musimon). In the present study, the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of nucleic acids extracted from archival material established that JSRV was associated with OPC in affected moufflon. JSRV was detected in the lungs and mediastinal lymph nodes. Immunohistochemical and in-situ PCR demonstrated that in the lungs, JSRV proviral DNA was localized in transformed and untransformed type II pneumocytes and in the alveolar macrophages. In the mediastinal lymph nodes, JSRV DNA was mainly located in the cortical follicles and paracortex. These data suggest that JSRV is the cause of OPC in Sardinian moufflon, as it is in Sardinian sheep.

Synthesis and antitumor activity of substituted 3-(5-imidazo[2,1-b]thiazolylmethylene)-2-indolinones.

The synthesis of 3-(5-imidazo]2,1-blthiazolylmethylene)-2-indolinones, analogs of compounds recently published, is described. The EIZ isomerism was studied by means of nuclear Overhauser effect experiments and X-ray crystallography. All the compounds were tested as potential antitumor agents. They were also tested as potential inhibitors of cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1), in order to determine if the antitumor activity was related to this mechanism of action. The results showed that under certain substitution conditions (5-methoxy group for the indole benzene ring and 2-methyl group for the imidazothiazole system), an interesting antitumor activity was found for some compounds. From the analysis of the antitumor data, 3-1(2,6-dimethylimidazo[2,1-bJ-thiazol-5-yl)methylenel-5-methoxy-2-indolinone was the most active of the whole series.

Skin eosinophilia from influenza viruses. An experimental histological study.

The authors would first like to stress the increasing frequency of bronchial asthma during or after influenza. To find an explanation for this occurrence they observed tissue reactions following an injection of viral material. In their experiments, they injected into the skin of guinea pigs, strains of the Hong Kong, Texas and USSR influenza viruses using current vaccines, sacrificing groups of animals 2, 6, 24, 48 hours and 7 days after the injection. The histological study revealed the following picture of reaction to influenza viruses. Two hours after the injection: marked and diffuse infiltration of eosinophils in the connective tissue of the skin. After 6 hours: the infiltration shows a predominance of neutrophils. After 24 hours: the neutrophil infiltration is predominant and diffuse. There is evidence of considerable degranulation of eosinophils. The cutaneous histiocytes undergo fibrocytic and marcophagic proliferation. After 28 hours, the same picture. After 7 days there is sever degeneration with a peripheral fibroblastic reaction. The most important finding of this experiment is the early marked infiltration of eosinophils which follows the injection of the influenza viruses. The eosinophil infiltration appears to be related to the release of histamine caused by influenza viruses. The histological examination did not reveal the presence of immune allergic-type cells at any time. Therefore, the onset of asthmatic attacks would appear to be more related to the histamine-releasing action of the influenza viruses rather than to their sensitizing activity. Naturally, the latter may occur in human pathologies.

Synthesis of imidazo[2,1-b]thiazoles and thiazolines as potential antiulcer agents.

The replacement of the imidazole ring of cimetidine with a bicyclic system (imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine), reported in the literature, produced compounds endowed with potent antiulcer activity. In this paper we describe the synthesis of imidazo [2,1-b]thiazoles and thiazolines bearing the side chain of metiamide, cimetidine and ranitidine: the compounds obtained, tested on gastric lesions induced in rats by ethanol and by stress, were devoid of antiulcer activity.
