The effect of fluoride treatments on glazed and polished ceramic surfaces.

A scanning electron microscope (SEM) Study was conducted to evaluate the micromorphology of glazed and polished ceramic restoration surfaces after treatment with different types of fluorides with different concentrations and acidity. This study showed that glazed ceramic surfaces appeared to be smoother and more resistant to fluoride agents than polished ceramic surfaces. Fluoride agents with a lower pH (more acidic) and higher in fluoride concentration caused more surface damage to porcelain. Therefore, it is recommended to use a neutral fluoride agent with low fluoride concentration. If the ceramic restoration is to be polished after glazing due to clinical adjustment, it is advisable to reglaze it particularly before fluoride application.

Short- and long-term effects of thumb-sucking habit breaking appliance on speech in children.

Fourteen children with thumb-sucking habit breaking appliances were evaluated for any defective speech. They were tested before insertion, 3 months, and 6 months after appliance placement. Also, after 6 months from appliance removal to test the short- and long-term effects on speech respectively. The results revealed that the habit breaker caused short-term deleterious effects on speech but no long-term effects after removal of the appliance. This appliance should only be used with children older than 4.5 years whose speech is mostly developed. While wearing the appliance, speech will be improved over time on individual basis.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma presenting as a urethral caruncle.

Primary malignant lymphoma of the female urethra is a rare entity. Five cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the female urethra have been previously reported. We report another case presenting with a urethral caruncle. A review of the literature is included.

Acute tumor lysis syndrome with squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva.

Acute tumor lysis syndrome (ATLS) is a rare metabolic complication in nonhematologic malignancies. We report a unique case of extensive regionally recurrent squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva who developed a picture compatible with ATLS 36 hr after the initiation of palliative chemotherapy. The patient suffered acute renal failure with hyperuricemia, hyperphosphatemia, and hypocalcemia as well as a picture suggestive of congestive heart failure. The patient responded well to adequate hydration, alkaline diuresis, and allopurinol. The potential for ATLS should be anticipated when treating metastatic or locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva with chemotherapy.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix implanting in the episiotomy site.

The implantation of cervical cancer in an episiotomy scar is very rare. We present such a case in a patient with stage IIIB squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix. The tumor implantation responded only partially to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Review of the literature revealed six cases of cervical cancer implanting in the episiotomy site. All followed a normal vaginal delivery. Early initial stage, small-size implantation lesion, and early surgical intervention seemed to be good prognostic factors.

Synthesis of condensed heterocycles from 3-aryl-2,4-dicarbethoxy-5-methylcyclohexanones and their testing for antimicrobial activity.

Condensation of the title compounds (1) with hydroxylamine hydrochloride, hydrazines and/or aromatic amines resulted in the formation of the benzisoxazoles 2, oximes 3, indazolines 4 and beta-keto anilides 6. The oxime derivatives and anilides underwent cyclization to compounds 2. The interaction between 1 and thiourea gave the benzothiazines 7 and thiouracils 8. Compounds 8 on treatment with monochloroacetic acid gave the dioxo compounds 9, while their reaction with hydrazine hydrate afforded the hydrazino derivatives 10, which upon treatment with nitrous acid gave the azido or tetrazolo derivatives 11 and 12. Treatment of 1 with 2,3-diaminopyridine and/or 2-amino-3-hydroxy-pyridine gave the pyrimidoquinazolines 13 or 14. Some of the synthesized compounds were screened to test their antimicrobial properties.

Cytogenetic effects of pulsing electromagnetic field on human lymphocytes in vitro: chromosome aberrations, sister-chromatid exchanges and cell kinetics.

Exposure of human lymphocyte cultures to a pulsing electromagnetic field (PEMF; 50 Hz, 1.05 mT) for various durations (24, 48 and 72 h) resulted in a statistically significant suppression of mitotic activity and a higher incidence of chromosomal aberrations. Furthermore, the shorter exposure times (24 and 48 h) did not cause a significant delay in cell turnover (cell proliferation index) or an increase in the baseline frequency of sister-chromatid exchanges (SCE). However, cultures continuously exposed to PEMF for 72 h exhibited significant reduction of the cell proliferation index (CPI) and an elevation of SCE rate. These results suggest that exposure to PEMF may induce a type of DNA lesions that lead to chromosomal aberrations and cell death but not to SCE, except probably at longer exposure times.

Chromosome aberrations, sister-chromatid exchanges and cell-cycle kinetics in human peripheral blood lymphocytes exposed to organoselenium in vitro.

The ability of 2 synthetic organoselenium compounds, a dimer of p-methoxybenzeneselenol (DPMBS) and benzylselenocyanate (BSC), to induce sister-chromatid exchanges (SCE) and chromosome aberrations (CA) as well as to alter the progression of the cell through mitosis has been investigated in cultured human lymphocytes. Cultures treated with the highest concentration (2.27 x 10(-5) M) of the 2 compounds exhibited about a 3-fold increase in the level of SCE and about 2-3-fold increase in the incidence of CA. In addition, the 2 selenium compounds led to an inhibition of cell proliferation as was evidenced by the depression of the proliferation rate index (PRI).

Pregnancy in a non-communication rudimentary uterine horn.

A case of pregnancy in a rudimentary uterine horn is presented. The pregnancy ended in fetal demise at the end of the second trimester. The diagnosis was missed by ultrasonography on two occasions and was made only at laparotomy following failure to initiate uterine contractions. Histologic examination of the myometrium of the rudimentary horn revealed extensive interstitial fibrosis. A high index of suspicion of pregnancy in a rudimentary horn is recommended whenever adequate ecbolic infusions fail to induce myometrial contractions.

The induction of chromosome aberrations in human purified peripheral blood lymphocytes following in vitro exposure to selenium.

Human lymphocyte cultures were treated with increasing concentrations (8.0 X 10(-8) M to 8.0 X 10(-5) M) of sodium selenite and selenomethionine 24 h after stimulation with phytohemagglutinin and were scored for chromosomal aberrations at 48 h. The yield of abnormal metaphases was dependent on the dose and the form of selenium used. At 8.0 X 10(-5) M the proportion of aberrant cells reached 53.5% and 43.0% for selenite and selenomethionine, respectively. The selenium-induced chromosomal aberrations were primarily of the chromatid type and included breaks and fragments. Chromosomal exchanges were less frequent and included triradials and quadriradials. These results confirm that selenium is clastogenic for cultured human lymphocytes.

Synthesis of some heterocycles of pharmaceutical interest.

The condensation of 2-aminobenzimidazole (2), 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (3), 5-aminotetrazole (4), 1-phenyl-3-aminopyrazolone (5), 2-aminobenzothiazole (6) and 2-amino-5-ethylthiadiazole (7) with 3-aryl-2,4-dicarboethoxy-5-hydroxy-5-methylcyclohexanones (1) has been investigated. Oxazepines 19 and 21 has been obtained from 1 and o-aminophenol. Cyclization of the carboxanilides 22 with polyphosphoric acid (PPA) gave the phenanthridinecarboxylates 23, while the cyclization of the arylhydrazones 26 gave the cinnoline carboxylate 27. The structures of the hitherto unknown ring systems have been confirmed by analytical and spectral methods. Some of the synthesized compounds were screened to test their antimicrobial and antifungal properties.

HBSAg antigenaemia in bilharzial patients.

The frequency of HBSAg in bilharzial patients (7%) was significantly higher than that in non bilharzial ones (2-5%). The presence of insulted liver by bilharzial, non bilharzial (C.P.H. and C.A.H.) or both (C.P.H. with bilharzia and C.A.H. with bilharzia) lesions have no role in changing the incidence of HBSAg in sera of bilharzial patients.

Malignant neoplasms in Saudi Arabia.

In a sample of 1000 consecutive malignant neoplasms in Saudis resident in the Western Region of Saudi Arabia, malignant lymphoma was the commonest of the life-threatening malignancies. The differences between malignant lymphoma in this sample and Western series include the greater frequency of lymphoma; the tendency for reticulum cell and poorly differentiated lymphomas to present as abdominal lesions; the earlier peak of prevalence of Hodgkin's disease, and the dissimilar proportions of its subtypes. The distribution of cancers in the gastrointestinal tract in our sample is almost the reverse of that encountered in the West in that cancer of the mouth and esophagus were more common than cancer of the lower intestinal tract. Lung cancer was relatively uncommon. The smoking habit is not so prevalent in Saudi Arabia as in the West and there is a need to maintain this situation by discouraging smoking. Cancer of the breast was by far the commonest major malignancy in the female, although most Saudi women have their first child early in their reproductive life. Skin cancers proved to be the most prevalent malignancy, and of these squamous cell carcinoma was the most common. The biases that affect studies such as ours in Saudi Arabia are stressed.
