[Certain inhibitors of proteolysis in blood serum of workers engaged in production of iron-manganese alloys].

In metallurgic workers exposed to manganese, ferric oxides, chromates, noise, thermal radiation and enhanced temperature in surroundings, a lower level of alpha 2-macroglobulin at an unlowered level of alpha 1-antitrypsin was observed. There was no relationship between either the length of employment or chronic bronchitis and level of alpha 1-antitrypsin and alpha 2-macroglobulin in the blood of workers under study.

[Chronic bronchitis in workers producing iron-manganese alloys].

Out of 205 workers employed at production of iron-manganese alloys in 35.6% chronic bronchitis (CB) was found. In 11.1% CB occurred in non-smokers, and in 42.5% in cigarette smokers. The incidence of CB was increasing with the number of smoked cigarettes, and in the workers with smoking index < or = 10 it was 53.3% (smoking index = number of cigarette packs smoked daily (1 pack = 20 cigarettes) x number of smoking years). No influence of occupation environment was found on the incidence of CB in the studied workers.

[Effect of bilipolin and uropolin on metabolic activity of neutrophils].

In 30 patients the metabolic activity of the neutrophils measured with the reduction ability of nitroblue tetrazolium was determined after intravenous administration of iodinated contrast media for cholangiography or urography. It was shown that 20 minutes after intravenous injection of the contrast medium the metabolic activity of phagocytizing granulocytes increased steeply and returned to the initial value after 24 hours.

[Effect of an occupational environment containing manganese on granulocyte adherence].

Workers employed in the manufacture of iron/manganese alloys were exposed primarily to manganese, but also to noise and other factors. Neutrophilic erythrocytes of those workers displayed significantly higher adherence compared to that determined in the control group. Duration of employment, occurrence of chronic bronchitis and the intensity of tobacco smoking did not affect the adhesive properties of neutrophilic granulocytes in peripheral blood.

[Degree of ventilation disturbances in persons with occupational exposure to manganese].

In workers chronically exposed to manganese who showed spirometric abnormalities, an evaluation was done of the degree of ventilation disturbances in relation to age, duration of work, cigarette smoking, and the presence of chronic bronchitis. It was shown that of greatest influence on the loss of ventilation efficacy was cigarette smoking, and, in a lower degree, age. Chronic bronchitis however, caused no greater impairment of ventilation efficacy. Duration of work remained almost without influence on the degree of ventilation impairment.

[Acetylcholinesterase activity in erythrocytes of workers engaged in the production of iron-manganese alloys].

The activity of acetylcholinesterase in the red blood cells of metallurgy workers producing iron-manganese alloys was statistically less significant than the activity of this enzyme in the control group. Work tenure and smoking intensity, measured using the smoking index method did not significantly affect the acetylcholinesterase activity in the worker's red blood cells (smoking index = number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day x years of smoking; one pack = 20 cigarettes). The results may point to malfunctions of the erythrocytes membranes caused by harmful substances in iron works producing iron-manganese alloys.

Acetylcholinesterase

[Urinary excretion of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxymandelic acid, 17-hydroxycorticosteroids and 17-ketosteroids in workers producing iron-manganese alloys].

Excretion of suprarenal hormones' metabolites was examined in workers producing ferro-manganese alloys. The subjects were exposed to manganese, iron , chromium compounds, thermal radiation, high temperature and noise. In comparison to the control group, those examined workers had increased excretion of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-mandelic acid and 17-hydroxycorticosteroids. It can be assumed that this increase results from organism's physiological adaptation to negative environmental and working conditions.

17-Hydroxycorticosteroids

[Excretion of hydroxyproline in the urine of workers engaged in the production of iron-manganese alloys].

Statistically significant increase of the excretion of hydroxyproline with urine has been found to occur in workers employed in iron-manganese alloy manufacture, compared with the excretion of hydroxyproline in urine of the control group. Besides, the workers employed for 10 years and longer were characterized by statistically significantly increased excretion of hydroxyproline with urine as compared to the workers employed for shorter periods. No significant differences in excretion of hydroxyproline with urine, however, were detected among workers with chronic bronchitis and among those with smoking factor less than or equal to 10 and smoking factor greater than 10. (Smoking factor = number of packages of cigarettes smoked per day times years of smoking).

[Protoporphyrin level in erythrocytes of workers in coke-producing plants].

Peripheral blood samples from workers of a coke factory were examined to determine protoporphyrin content in erythrocytes and haemoglobin concentration. Statistically significant increase of protoporphyrin level was found in the coke factory workers, as compared with the control group whereas haemoglobin content was very similar in both the groups. The results indicate that the working environment of coke factory may induce protoporphyrin synthesis in erythrocytes as well as inhibit generation of iron porphyrins.

[Acid phosphatase and non-specific esterase activities in peripheral blood lymphocytes of coke plant workers].

In 32 workers of coking plants cytoenzymatic reaction was examined in lymphocytes peripheral blood to determine the presence of acid phosphatase and unspecific esterase expressed in total score values. Statistically significant decrease of unspecific esterase activity and lower mean values of acid phosphatase activity were found as compared to the results obtained in the control group. It seems that periodical determinations of cytoenzymatic activity of unspecific esterase in lymphocytes of peripheral blood may be useful in assessment of biological effects of occupational exposure in coking plants workers.

Acid Phosphatase

[Neutrophil function in the peripheral blood of workers in a coke plant].

In workers of the cooking plant the resting metabolism of peripheral blood neutrophils has been evaluated. The nitrotetrazolium blue reduction has been used for evaluation of above phenomenon. Simultaneously analogous investigations have been performed in properly selected control group. It has been stated that the cooking plant environment represents a strong stimulator of the neutrophil resting metabolism as seen by significant increase of the formazan-positive cells when compared with that in the control group.

Adult

[Results of various biochemical studies in secondary bacterial pneumonia].

In patients with chronic circulatory insufficiency, chronic nonspecific diseases of respiratory system, lung malignancies, as well as in the group of patients with "other diseases" complicated by bacterial pneumonia the total protein and protein fractions, bilirubin, activity of alanine aminotransferase and of aspartate aminotransferase in the blood serum has been determined. The control group consisted of analogous groups of patient without, however, bacterial pneumonia. It has been stated that in patients with lung cancer bacterial pneumonia has been accompanied by the increased concentration of beta-globulin and the decreased concentration of gamma-globulin. In other groups of patients the lowered concentration of albumin and the increased concentration of alpha-globulin has been observed. Chronic nonspecific diseases of respiratory system were, moreover, characterized by the increased concentration of gamma-globulin. In some groups of patients with secondary bacterial pneumonias if compare with analogous++ groups of patients without pneumonia the increased bilirubin concentration and increased activity of alanine aminotransferase and/or aspartate aminotransferase remaining however within normal range has been demonstrated.
