Because of progressive sensorineural hearing loss 26 patients of the age of 2 to 19 years were treated for 10 days with infusions of prednisolone, pentoxifylline and piracetam. After this treatment improved, auditory thresholds were found in 58%. In comparison with a previous investigation (treatment with prednisolone and pentoxifylline except piacetam), no significant difference between these two methods of therapy was seen.
As a contribution to the diagnosis of central auditory disorders in children we developed a series of tests providing a basis for the analysis of auditory perception dysfunctions, offering a detailed description of their symptomatology and thus furnishing a basis for carefully directed measures of treatment. Evaluation criteria necessary for the analysis of tests featuring artificially altered language (band-pass-filtered speech, time-compressed speech, tests with background noise or dichotic speech) are described together with findings obtained from previous investigations. The test series further includes objective audiometric methods and additional tests for the evaluation of auditory perception performance (e.g. phoneme discrimination).
We describe a multi-factorial model for the diagnosis of speech development disorders. The model serves as the basis for an individually designed course of therapy covering all aspects of the disorder. The separate diagnostic steps are in accordance with a classification of speech development disorders based on aetiology and pathology.
40 children were treated for progressive sensorineural hearing loss with infusions of prednisolone and pentoxifylline. After this treatment pure tone audiometric findings showed improved auditory thresholds in 52.5%. The results are discussed dependent on aetiologic findings.
